I've just started using Pimsleur. What I immediately liked about it is that it is heavily focussed on getting you to listen to and participate in coversations. This is the reason why I switched from Babbel. Babbel has it's strengths but for me the most important thing is learning how to actually converse in French which is something Pimsleur does better.

Yeah I think apps like Babbel are just for vocab basically. Yeah it helps you form sentences but I feel like actually hearing the language spoken is what is a game changer for me. I learned French and still find it extremely hard to understand spoken French. I haven’t tried French on pimsleur but I’m starting Spanish and it’s significantly easier to understand and respond quicker when the person is speaking. I love it! I don’t think it’s just cuz Spanish is easy.

Think about it people spend upwards of 100 dollars a month on a gym membership and hardly ever go and the gym never called them to ask them to come. Doing both babel and pimsleur every month is still way cheaper and less physically painful.

These are my two favorite language apps. Great comparison and conclusion. If you can afford it get both. Hold out a while before you purchase. I did this with both Babbel and Pimsleur. Babbel offered me a 2 year subscription with all 13 languages for $126. Pimsleur offered a yearly subscription for all 51 languages which was $164.95 or $13.75 per month down from $20.95. That’s 34% off.

I took Spanish only one year in high school (a very long time ago!) and have always wished that I knew more of the language. Now, I am getting ready to work with refugee children from Central America, and would like to be able to better communicate with them. I think I am going to follow your suggestion of using a combination of both Pimsleur and Babbel, to give myself the best chance of a jump start!

I have done all 150 lessons of Mandarin Chinese for Pimsleur, four times each. I really enjoyed it, and did it every day for my first few years of learning. I have been studying Chinese for 4,5 years now and while I have not used Pimsleur in a long while, I would recommend it for someone wanting to start learning a language and picking up speaking ability. I was using Pimsleur before I could read or write Chinese. I wouldn't recommend using it (or any language learning tool/app) in isolation though. Babbel sounds cool, based on this review I wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, it looks like Chinese is not an option, nor do they seem to have any Asian languages. Shame really, sounded like it would be cool compliment to my studies. Bit surprised how limited the language options are. Glossika I think is a great compliment to Pimsleur though for even more listening and speaking practice. For learning the grammar and writing and such, a textbook and some kind of structured online course really is essential in my opinion though.

This was really helpful and helped me to consider Pimsleur over Babbel. I've been learning french since Grade 5 and feel that I know book french rather than conversational french. I can read easily but struggle to follow real life conversations with the speed and slang being used. I can actually see doing both in time but right now my goal is to speak to the same level as my reading and grammar knowledge.

I have traveled extensively and lived in Asia, Europe, and South America and have studied languages since childhood (Spanish, German, Mandarin, and Japanese). Now I’m focusing on different languages because I know full it make future trips to my next countries (Egypt, Pakistan, India) so more enjoyable. The locals ALWAYS appreciate English-speakers who are at least semi-functional in their language and they are more willing to help you during your trip. Plus, if you really hit it off you got a new lifelong friend. Nothing like expanding your mind!

I feel like the longer lessons would more likely cause the lessons to be remembered. I'm currently using Busuu but I feel like I'm forgetting a lot since the lessons are so short. Ultimately I'm learning a new language to have more access to another culture. As I said before, I find the German language to be the most appealing, and the people seem really friendly and warm towards people learning their language.

thank you for the informative review! I just finished the 7-day trial with pimsleur and just signed up for the annual subscription. To me, the biggest selling point, other than many mentioned in this video already, is that pimsleur offers spanish (spain - castilian). Not sure if babble offers that option as well, but from what I gathered by glancing at the main page, it doesn't seem so. And this option isn't available in Duolingo either.

I'm looking to learn different languages, particularly Spanish, since I'm Latino but speak very little Spanish. After that, maybe in future, learn other languages because it would be very cool to be able to speak to other people in their native language and to see their surprise on their faces, would be fun, and make friends. Any suggestions you might have which might be best would be appreciated. Thank You!

So sorry to comment on this oddity, but I'm a Voice Actor myself and so it just jumps at me: I've never heard someone speak like you before. you have such clear pronunciation, all the way up until maybe the last 2-3 words of a sentence. Then you just suddenly speed up _a lot_ and it almost feels like you simply let the last few words tumble to the ground while you exhale. Good examples are 1:10 "lessonstocomplete", 1:41 onwards "exercises" at the end of the sentence is about half as short as it is a few second later in the middle of a sentence. 2:05 The whole sentence is pronounced crispy clear except for the last word "material". Anyways, try to not drop the end of a sentence! (I'm enjoying the content, please don't view this as hate!)

I'm trying out Pimsleur now, and I've immediately noticed 1 thing that as best I can tell hasn't been touched on. It seems that Pimsleur is teaching a lot of obsolete language in the Spanish modules. For example, everyone else seems to be teaching the English "Where are you from?" as "de donde eres?", but Pimsleur is teaching "de donde es usted?". From everything I've heard otherwise, Pimsleur's language is old and outdated. They also use Senorita, which I've heard no one says anymore. I saw a review from another person on another language to this effect as well. Does anyone have any experience with this - is the Pimsleur langauge obsolete?

For Japanese, I'd recommend combining Pimsleur with Memrise. They complement each other extremely well. One is audio and one is visual. I would stack lessons every other day to give your brain time to process the different modes of learning. Good luck!

@@TestPrepInsight John, I just downloaded Memrise… there are two Japanese, one with mostly hiragana and katakana, the other without. Which one should I go with in combo with Pimsleur… I really appreciate your input..ciao, John

I would start with the course without hiragana and katakana. Keep it simple at first

❤ *Thank you for this great video. I’m learning both Mandarin & Spanish. (Babbel doesn’t offer Mandarin.) For Spanish would you recommend using both Babbel & Pimsleur to accelerate my journey?* ❤

So i have the original pimsleur spanish mp3 recordings from back when it used to just be audio. I've been considering dusting it off and going through the program. Do you think it's worth it to upgrade to this new version of pimsleur that has the additional activities and supplemental material?

I think so. Those additional drills really help to drive home material. At least try it out with their free trial. Thanks for watching!

I’m learning a new language to be able to speak to the locals and make new friends in my new environment. I feel like it’s the only way to really understand a culture and peoples properly. Plus, it’s just so fascinating to me!

Good to know that Pimsleur is audio-based. I’ll probably give Babbel a go first, though. Great reviews on both.
