I've just started using Pimsleur. What I immediately liked about it is that it is heavily focussed on getting you to listen to and participate in coversations. This is the reason why I switched from Babbel. Babbel has it's strengths but for me the most important thing is learning how to actually converse in French which is something Pimsleur does better.
@TestPrepInsight Жыл бұрын
Good points. Thanks for watching :)

Yeah I think apps like Babbel are just for vocab basically. Yeah it helps you form sentences but I feel like actually hearing the language spoken is what is a game changer for me. I learned French and still find it extremely hard to understand spoken French. I haven’t tried French on pimsleur but I’m starting Spanish and it’s significantly easier to understand and respond quicker when the person is speaking. I love it! I don’t think it’s just cuz Spanish is easy.

These are my two favorite language apps. Great comparison and conclusion. If you can afford it get both. Hold out a while before you purchase. I did this with both Babbel and Pimsleur. Babbel offered me a 2 year subscription with all 13 languages for $126. Pimsleur offered a yearly subscription for all 51 languages which was $164.95 or $13.75 per month down from $20.95. That’s 34% off.

I took Spanish only one year in high school (a very long time ago!) and have always wished that I knew more of the language. Now, I am getting ready to work with refugee children from Central America, and would like to be able to better communicate with them. I have done all 150 lessons of Mandarin Chinese for Pimsleur, four times each. I really enjoyed it, and did it every day for my first few years of learning. I have been studying Chinese for 4,5 years now and while I have not used Pimsleur in a long while, I would recommend it for someone wanting to start learning a language and picking up speaking ability. I was using Pimsleur before I could read or write Chinese. I wouldn't recommend using it (or any language learning tool/app) in isolation though. Babbel sounds cool, based on this review I wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, it looks like Chinese is not an option, nor do they seem to have any Asian languages. Shame really, sounded like it would be cool compliment to my studies. Bit surprised how limited the language options are. Glossika I think is a great compliment to Pimsleur though for even more listening and speaking practice. For learning the grammar and writing and such, a textbook and some kind of structured online course really is essential in my opinion though.

thank you for the informative review! I just finished the 7-day trial with pimsleur and just signed up for the annual subscription. To me, the biggest selling point, other than many mentioned in this video already, is that pimsleur offers spanish (spain - castilian). So sorry to comment on this oddity, but I'm a Voice Actor myself and so it just jumps at me: I've never heard someone speak like you before. you have such clear pronunciation, all the way up until maybe the last 2-3 words of a sentence. Then you just suddenly speed up _a lot_ and it almost feels like you simply let the last few words tumble to the ground while you exhale. Good examples are 1:10 "lessonstocomplete", 1:41 onwards "exercises" at the end of the sentence is about half as short as it is a few second later in the middle of a sentence. 2:05 The whole sentence is pronounced crispy clear except for the last word "material". Anyways, try to not drop the end of a sentence! (I'm enjoying the content, please don't view this as hate!)

I'm trying out Pimsleur now, and I've immediately noticed 1 thing that as best I can tell hasn't been touched on. It seems that Pimsleur is teaching a lot of obsolete language in the Spanish modules. For example, everyone else seems to be teaching the English "Where are you from?" as "de donde eres?", but Pimsleur is teaching "de donde es usted?". From everything I've heard otherwise, Pimsleur's language is old and outdated. They also use Senorita, which I've heard no one says anymore. I saw a review from another person on another language to this effect as well. Does anyone have any experience with this - is the Pimsleur langauge obsolete?
@soldatinconnu1804 Жыл бұрын
The usted is still used, that’s the formal way. I would never use the « eres ». It’s like sayins that everyone says « hey bro » instead of « good morning sir ».
