Great video and great news. I just downloaded Sony’s Imaging Edge software, but then in looking at the info on the Sony page for the Remote software found a chart which seemed to say the RX10 IV was not supported for Live View, or controlling the camera from the computer. I’m wondering now is that maybe because I have a Mac ( ?), and downloaded the Mac version? In any case i,f the software will allow me to do everything you covered, maybe magnify the view and also adjust focus from the computer when in MF I’ll be thrilled. I’m trying to photograph Jupiter with the RX10 IV and can use any focusing help I can get! PS. Thank you for you very helpful book on the RX10 IV. I have both the paperback and Kindle versions.

I believe Sony had an error in its chart, and the tethered shooting should work as described. Best of luck with your photographs of Jupiter!

Alex, at 3:47 of your video you show the 'USB Connection' Screen. Mine is greyed our and I can only do 'Mass Storage' and can not go PC Remote. Do I have a problem with my camera?

No, I don't believe you have a problem with your camera. This issue usually occurs because the CTRL W/ SMARTHPHONE menu option is turned on. If you turn off that option, you should be able to connect with the PC REMOTE option.

Alex White, when was the last time that you or anyone tethered a flash or strobe? Why can't Sony get their act together? < WiFi will not work on computer (View & Remote) < Under "M" mode, CAN NOT adjust Aperture < Sony boasted the Japan Zeiss 24-600 but CAN NOT do Zoom on computer Were you able to get NFC /or WiFi to do wirelessly rather than tethered to a computer? It would be nice if it work like ATG/Canon EOS Utility and ATG/Hasselblad Phocus.

You can adjust aperture in M mode by using the aperture ring on the lens - works fine

According to Sony's website, it will work for remote shooting but not with a live view. But the information at that site is not always completely accurate, and I have not tested the software with that camera model myself, so you probably should do further research to find out for sure.

No, you can control various exposure and file settings, and you can perform interval shooting, but you cannot zoom the lens from the Sony tethered-shooting application.

@@multileo79 Yes, you can use the Imaging Edge Mobile app from Sony to connect using a smartphone or tablet, which does allow zooming and other functions. Also, you can use a remote control, such as the Sony RM-VPR1 and others.

Did they kill this with the 2.0 Firmware? Mass storage is the only option in USB menu.

Sorry, I found it. You have to turn off Control With Smartphone in menu Network 1, Option 4

@@BlitzAlaska For me this was the way to get the camera to appear in the Imaging Edge Desktop Remote tool but it still was not able to connect. In Setup 3 , USB Connection changing the USB Connection type to : PC Remote did the trick for me !

Yes. There will be a red button icon on the computer's screen, which you can press to start or stop a video recording.

I assume it can shoot 4K video while tethered if the camera is set for that quality, but I don't have my RX10 IV camera anymore, so I can't test it to be certain.

I find tethering to be very useful when I'm shooting objects indoors with lights. I can view the image on a computer's large screen and adjust various settings from the computer, while checking the focus on the large screen.

@@alexswhite I was more thinking about why didn’t Sony use WiFi to implement this (latency?). I have an RX10M4, I also have your excellent book, thank you. Btw, is the necessary USB cable a std cable? Is there any restrictions on the length of the cable?

@@esaviitala6708 I'm not sure what kept Sony from using WiFi; presumably some engineering issues. I use standard USB cables from a reliable company such as Anker. I have used up to 10-foot or 3-meter cables with no issues.

I don't know of any way to read the shutter count through software.

@@mirouphotographe3600 As far as I know, there is no way to get an accurate count from the camera's internal data. You might be able to check the image numbers of the latest images to see how many images have been taken, but that might not be very accurate.

Connect the PC to the camera using a good micro-USB cable, and set the USB Connection menu option on the camera to PC Remote. Launch the Sony Imaging Edge software, and the live view should appear, along with the icons for controlling the camera. If that doesn't work, check the troubleshooting tips and other information at the Sony site: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/faqs/.

@@junekevinornido I just tried it with my RX10 IV camera connected to a laptop running Windows 10, and the live view showed up with no problems. I would suggest that you make sure you have the latest version of the PC Remote (Imaging Edge) software and a good micro-USB cable. Beyond that, you could try contacting Sony support at esupport.sony.com.
