I’ve Ben in the fish keeping hobby for about 12 years now. I started out with shrimp when I was little, then upgraded to bettas, I had bettas for 9 years. Then I switched to African Dwarf Frogs. I still have the ADF’s from 3 years ago, but just 2 years ago I upgraded my tank to a 20G, and I have 5 Glo fish, 2 Frogs and 1 pleco. It’s going great! The frogs are 3, glo fish and pleco are 2. I have a heater, filter, and everything needed. A,l is going well. I fell glo fish aren’t only for beginners, but for anyone who likes them and who has been in the hobby for long enough.

Recessive genes are not "weaker" genes nor make the species weaker. Blue eyes in humans are recessive genes and don't make humans weak. What usually happens is that in order to maintain recessive genes in a population breeders breed animals with some degree of familial relation, therefore inbreeding the population and causing lots of problems. In this case though, GloFish had jellyfish genes added to their DNA in order to create the colors, so it's a different process than basic dominant/recessive genes.

I recently adopted four fish that came with a 5.5 gallon tank from my coworkers who could not take care of them anymore, and didnt know much about them. So far, they are all doing well: one is a Platy fish, two are small catfish (I think), and I just found out that the fourth one is a Tetra Glowfish. I am doing all the research I can to make sure they thrive. My first question is the Platy fish, and the catfish good enough for Tetra Glowfish's community?

I've been in the hobby for over 20 years, serviced tanks for a living for a couple, the hype is not accurate at all. They are as easy to care for as any other tetra, as for tank size of course larger is better, but it would help the hobby if you educate on smaller tanks as they are here to stay. If you have a 10 gallon, don't over-feed and 25% water change weekly (w/gravel vac) will keep the water parameters in line with say 6 tetras (one of each color as so many will do). Though they are schooling, they aren't like some species that do the perfect back and forth patterns so smaller size is manageable.

So I got a 20 gallon GloFish set for my birthday. Along with it a I got a total of 16 glofish (5 barb, 5 danio, 5 tetra, 1 shark)... everyone is telling me this is over populated and I should consider upgrading my filter (tetra whisper 20g). What should I do? The fish seem to be doing just fine going into month two, but I don’t want to be torturing my fish. Thoughts? I believe the kit I got is the one that goes for about 129 on Amazon.
@favoritemix96346 жыл бұрын
Martin Guzman id definitely say this is well over overstocked. the only thing you can really do is maybe make sure you have a good filter to carry all the bioload. also make sure your tank isn’t overstocked with too many decorations. remember they are schooling fish and need room to swim together. best case scenario you would be able to afford another tank to divide the fish and give each more room. This is just my opinion, and I hope all goes well with your new tank!

I have every Glofish color tetra, an albino skirted, and a black skirted tetra in a 15-gallon tank for over a year now. We haven't lost any. Unexpectedly, we got a single baby purple, black-striped skirted tetra, hiding in the bushy trees. S/he's in with baby livebearers and she's the queen of the tank. She's almost ready in size to go back with her family because she chases the other babies around during dinner time. His color seems to be glowing up as s/he grows, too. We've had him/her for over a month, now. Our water and plants must be just right to have that baby be born.

Still new to this, but I did learn an important lesson. If you're getting your glofish shipped, even overnight, don't open the bag until you're ready to immediately remove the fish since ammonia can suddenly turn super toxic when introduced with fresh air. Best thing to do is float the bag in your aquarium for an hour (if they're nervous) and then pour the water into a bucket while catching the fish with a net and immediately putting them into the tank. Don't pour that toxic water in a nicely cycled tank.

Glofish colors aren't a recessive gene, they were originally gene spliced with florescent jelly fish and then the red ones were created with genes from coral. So no they aren't "painted" or injected but they're genetically modified to have this color. In nature the way that recessive genes create brighter colors is that two fish with a bright color recessive gene mate and then The offspring will have a chance of brighter colors and then so on and so forth, you made the brightest colored offsping with the other brightest colored ones and you get a crazy bright fish happens with a lot of goldfish in nature, however when it comes to GloFish they would have never come to these colors naturally in nature. In the 90s scientist from Singapore originally created a zebra danio glofish, a danio egg was injected with the genes from a jellyfish to make it green and glow in the dark in an attempt to create a fish that would glow when it was in contact with pollutants in the water the first step in this process was creating a fish that could glow all the time, after they did that they realized that there would be a market for these "glow-in-the-dark" fish so they trademarked the term GloFish and thus they were born.

Beware of some aquarium fish sellers. Their filtration systems are connected to ALL of the tanks in their store and one sick fish, even if not in the tank you are focusing on can infect the ENTIRE store and stock. Ask the store or shop if they do this practice or use individual filtration for each individual tank. This is a great protocol for any reputable store to follow.
