Fun fact: The toads in SMB1 were originally called "Mushroom Retainers" for some odd reason. It's possible the person who wrote the guide was somehow unaware of the updated name, although that would be pretty unlikely given that the name Toad had been in use since at least SMB2.

Crazy part of strategy guides was that they rarely directly told you how to beat the game. Mostly they would give you riddles on how to win. They "guide" you in the right direction but you still have to figure out how to get through everything. Yah fun lol

I did something similar recently when replaying Super Mario Galaxy. I only performed actions that were expressly taught to me by the game. Not even a long jump or wall kick was allowed until I found the relevant instructional sign. It was pretty neat. I had to restrain myself from using the crazy maneuvers I usually do.

I think you should do a challenge where you try to time yourself to see how fast you can complete individual stages in Mario 64. The time ends when you get the last star of the stage. Then try it again to beat your personal best on that stage !
