Thanks for the early Saturday morning surprise with cow and all. Over here in the Netherlands exotic gardening sites do not talk about the varieties Meifeng and Empress. However, they do talk about the variety Steroidal Giant. I have a young Tetrapanax, which I bought as a Rex. I do not care if this is the right name, as long as it is a Tetrapanax. I think the difference between the varieties are small and I cannot tell the difference, nor do I care to, to be honest.

Thank you so much for explaining that. I bought what was supposed to be a Rex and luckily it looks like I have one, but have always wondered. Love your videos

Cheers kris. Very informative. I’ve got 4 small plants in the last year after a true Rex. Think I probably have 2 or 3 as the powder is beige but now you’ve made me want an empress. 😂😂😂

In North America we have a different form called “Steroidal Giant”. Very similar to Rex, but seems to be quite hardy and it does sucker, but not invasive. It came from Japan to Hawaii to California, where it grew in a small pot for a few years. At that time it appeared to be a dwarf form but once it got into the ground it blew up. My plants will send suckers but only about one per year and the leaves can reach four feet wide.

Which ever one, it's still a fantastic plant to have. I have mine in a big pot. Just incase I ever move! This is why I love watching your videos, we learn so much!!

They're easy enough to take pups from. Why not plant them out fully and just take pups or cuttings? If you needed to move and you didn't have a pup, you could just hack the top off and take it as a cutting, or dig it up.

Thanks for the info. Now lets see if we can find them for sale.

There are 2 different types I’ve grew both some have like a brown powdery tint all over the plant an leaves an the other is smooth no tint an a slightly wider variegation between the leaves.

Great information and summary. My favourite part was the cow though staring you out. Can I ask who won the staring battle, who lost and looked away first?

What about the Steroidal Giant ?

I missed that one as I don't have one to film and also the main focus was on the rex confusion

Thanks for the video Kris. To be honest, I'm so bored of all the "is it a Rex", nonsense. They are all lovely plants. I personally have a very special "non-deeped grooved Cambridgeshire" variety. aka a Tetrapanax papyrifer.
