From what I've heard these types of shows do have consultants for these things, they just choose to ignore what they want. TV shows don't want to look accurate, that's a documentary. They want to look "good" and believable enough to the audience while having a splash of reality thrown into it. And from what I've gathered it's a lot easier to frame an actor's face at every angle if they're wearing neutral dark colors and things that don't get in the way of the cameras, such as shields.

For those of you who compare "Vikings" to real Vikings. Show was about characters. Huge part about character is face. When they are in battle it adds more depth to it when you see emotions etc. If everyone had helmet, noone knew who is Ragnar, Rolo, Lagertha etc in battle... And also it would be challenging to create audio if everyone was in armor etc. There are many aspects into filmmaking.
@thrownswordpommel73933 жыл бұрын
But you could still know who's who though. They had ways to do that in history too. Banners, helmet decorations, patterns painted on shields etc
@Roeper4373 жыл бұрын
@@thrownswordpommel7393 yes in large scale. But i am speaking about individuals. Also it reinforce feeling of bravery, strenght,... when you see some muscles and notice how enemies were portrayed. They had helmets, similar uniforms, same colors, they were in general smaller and they looked weaker and scared. What's better way to show primal dominance than staring and showing teeths in anger while face is covered in blood? Also fighting is portrayed very hollywoodish, if they would fight historically correct in shieldwalls in slow pace it would be boring and not interesting for major audience. After all it was created for business and entertainment considering major audience knows nothing about history and knows only popculture stereotypes

Awesome kit! While I know the helmet is adapted for your Viking combat events, I’m not entirely sure the maille aventail going completely around the helmet is historically accurate. I could be wrong though. Also, where did you get that long, grey undertunic from?!?
@thebronzeviking43753 жыл бұрын
The gjermundbu helmet has evidence of a open on the face aventail so does the yarm helmet but don’t rule out the full aventail since we only have two fully constructed helmets that have been found
@thebronzeviking43753 жыл бұрын
And there are more than two helmets found yet they are not complete most common is the nasal or the brow of the ocular found such as the tjele helm fragment
@teutonicpenguin95933 жыл бұрын
We have several examples of full maille on helmets but none from viking helmets. That's one of the discrepancies with my kit that I'm debating. I just love the look of full maille tho lol. For my next helm I'll probably leave it open on the face

@@thebronzeviking4375 and what for the chainmail? I was under the impression that it wasn't common at all ?
@thebronzeviking43753 жыл бұрын
@@pentheus_1644 chain mail wasn’t common on the battlefield yet we have found some examples from incredibly from really wealthy Vikings .gjermundbu helmet and the yarm helmet there are pieces of chain mail along with holes for the mail to go into on the helmet just not fully around the head

Really nice, appreciate the heavy woollen tunic instead of a padded gambeson, probably more realistic. Two thoughts though: 1. The leg wraps probably went on after the boots, as they would keep water and dirt out that way. 2. The belt or sash probably went on after the sword baldric to keep in in place.
