May 13, 2007: the final day of the Premier League season. With seconds left in the first half of a match between champions Manchester United and relegation favourites West Ham, the ball loops off Wes Brown’s right boot and into the Old Trafford sky. Carlos Tevez, in default wasp attack mode, meets it and slides the ball between the legs of Edwin Van Der Sar and into the net to secure a 1-0 win for the Londoners.
Although scored in Manchester, this goal had its most profound impact in Sheffield. However, it was a goal with its roots, or, perhaps tentacles, in South America, Russia and Israel, a goal so dramatic it was the end game of a transfer seemingly masterminded by two Russian oligarchs with direct links to Vladimir Putin.
In fact, it was a transfer so murky that it would be illegal now.

Oh, I remember MSI's little adventures in Brazil. Corinthians was a pain in the ass back then but they weren't the only ones doing it. Then again, most people who bought players for their clubs were massive fans of the clubs and would, eventually, see something out of it (see Fluminense and Unimed for a good example). Oh, and Rede Globo working really hard not to bat an eye towards Tévez and Mascherano at Corinthians was some fun stuff as well.

The most amazing thing about this whole double transfer was the fact that Mascherano couldn't even get a bloody game for us! Like you said in the video, he only played 5 times for us before Liverpool bought him. Hayden bloody Mullins used to get in the team ahead of him!! Think about that for a second..... Javier Mascherano, a World Class player who went on to spend *years* at Barcelona, COULD NOT get in to a piss-poor West Ham team because of Hayden Mullins. Crazy! Not to mention, we were also offered the chance to buy Tevez outright for only £30million at the end of the season. We turned it down because we couldn't find the cash.... only for us to then get sued by Sheff Utd for around the same amount. Kia Joorabchian offered Tevez to Man Utd for the same price and they bit his hand off!

So why are third party ownerships banned but clubs owned by international states (i.e. Manchester City, PSG) not? Seems the rational for banning third party ownerships (harmful effects on football, it's essential values thus undermining the overall integrity of the game) is akin to what's happening to football under state-owned clubs
@rahilmohan4494
@rahilmohan4494 4 жыл бұрын
The ManCity and PSG situations are quite different. PSG are wholly owned by the Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) corporation, a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority which is a direct arm of the Qatari government. ManCity on the other hand, is owned by a private investor, Sheikh Mansour, under the City Football Group, a direct subsidiary of the independent Abu Dhabi United Group. Almost every single major club is owned by such an investment group and banning this practice is just not feasible in the current climate of the game. The exceptions are of course 'communal' clubs like Barca and Madrid, who tbf, aren't the best examples of financial management.

Hi, this video was amazing. I'm a Brazilian supporter of Corinthians, when Tevez are an idol and mascherano do not are so markable. The worst part (for me) in this TPO investment are the fact that KIA/MSI want to take the total control of Corinthians and their political and social part. For this reason, divergences became natural even in 2005, when the team wins the league. The biggest problem are that after the players go to West Ham and the contract broken, Corinthians need to pay high contracts and even some money for MSI transitions like NILMAR that came from LYON to CORINTHIANS and play in 2005-2006. The money of that transition are payed until 2009! This financial problem in Corinthians led to the formation of weak squads, what culminated in the relegation of the club in 2007 for the first time in history. After that, Corinthians win the second division (2008), Brazilian cup (2009), Brazilian league (2011), Copa Libertadores (2012) and the Fifa Club World Cup against ABRAMOVIC Chelsea. A beauty end for this tragic history!

This misses a key point. Yes, eventually the “independent” (ahem) panel found against West Ham but it was a perversion of law. West Ham had already been through the judiciary process twice and won both times against the claims of Sheffield United. West Ham were not required to go to the arbitration but agreed to because they had already won twice. This proved to be a mistake of course. The Premier League gave permission for Tevez to play and at no point said he was ineligible to play, so any assertion they should have been docked points is frivolous, Sheffield should have take the PL to court not West Ham. If you want real examples of TPO, look at Ronaldo to Man United and also several players who went to Leeds (including Viduka) when they had that fantastic team under O’Leary.

Almost 15 years later this still boils my blood, even as a neutral. The amount of fraud, collusion, and rule-breaking necessary to make this happen and almost nothing came of it. Sheffield United did enough that season to stay up, and West Ham cheated. No other way to put it. They needed a ringer scheme to stay up. It was too bad, Mascherano and Tevez are two of my favorite players of that decade. But that season... they did the devil's work... and the devil was Red.

In this case, what happened at United? I was a massive fan but we chose not to sign him. I was under the impression that just as stated here, it would have been illegal. Does Tevez still have the ability to move without a fee?

It was a strange loan deal. United paid MSI for a 2 year loan deal and at the end of that, Tevez chose City (maybe because they paid something like £47m to MSI or maybe due to the wages)

You're right, £20m these days feels like nothing. Sheff Utd may have been able to survive for a few seasons or perhaps even establish themselves like Bournemouth and earned so much more. I'm a neutral, but will definitely be supporting Sheffield when the two teams play each other.

Yes you are wrong. They were fined £5 mill by the premier League and told they were good to go, the third party agreement was of no benefit to West Ham (in fact it allowed Tevez to be sold at any point) whereas other clubs (cough man u) had been getting away with tpa's for year that affected what happened ON THE PITCH) for example "we will sell you this player if he's "injured against us" Sheffield United took six points off West ham that season and had literally no one but themselves to blame for being relegated
@Bromley68
@Bromley68 4 жыл бұрын
@@CDStoner Spot on. And If I remember, Sheffield Utd, were 10 points clear of relegation with x games to go when they went on a losing streak that had nothing to do with West Ham. Also, again, from memory, other PL clubs had started bitching about Tevez (Crystal Palace and Fulham if I'm correct) but suddenly went quiet when they secured safety. It was only Sheffield Utd who started on their crusade against WHUFC (with bloody Sean Bean wanting to ride a horse to PL headquarters or some bollocks)
@Bromley68
@Bromley68 4 жыл бұрын
Not quite. As I understood it, West Ham were circling the drain and it was decided a points deduction would make no difference. After all, what's the point of deducting points from a club about to get relegated, even with an Argentinian superstar? WHUFC were fined (correctly) for failing to provide the documentation. The next thing, WHUFC went into a purple patch and Sheffield Utd went the other way, entirely independent of each other.

@@MashiatCOD99 I know, you are right, that's the law, every player can have a legal representative,and clubs would take advantage of players who sometimes are just 18-19 year old kids. But it is getting ridiculous at times. The Agent of Neymar(his father lol) got around 40 mil commission at the Barca transfer, this Raiola mafiot asks 20 mil or more at some big transfers. They are just parasites, don't do anything to deserve that money. It would be better if those money remain in clubs or go directly to the player themselves...
@MashiatCOD99
@MashiatCOD99 4 жыл бұрын
Tony Neculai I completely agree. But they have the negotiating power, as it’s quite as simple as “You won’t get my client unless you pay me as well”. I believe it should be that the player pays the agent, as it should be, and the agent should not get any compensation or commission fees from clubs, unless they are brought in as a fourth party to broker a deal. Maybe now this will stop agents acting selfishly and instead doing what’s best for their clients.

Yeah, its true that TPO is banned, but here in south america theres always a way to get around. Some clubs are only a facade to businessmen to work their trade, like Uruguay`s second tier Deportivo Maldonado. A lot of players registered for them had never entered the pitch or worn the shirt. Since players rights cant be owned by third parties, they are registered in the club, which is owned by the guys... Shady!
