Australia didn't really embrace Peterbilt like we did Kenworth but I sure like the look of those 589's. Highlight of that clip Mike is those beautiful Gliders... I would image that patriot paint scheme from 1976 is not unlike Kenworth's VIT200 Bicentennials of the same year. Great you met up with Cabover Gary.

Hi Mike thanks for sharing, takes me back to the Cummins Signature 600. Jamboree. This was a jamboree in Columbus Indiana and everyone who purchased a Signature engine was invited to the factory for the weekend. There were hundreds of trucks, and after hauling logs in Northern Alberta for the previous 2 weeks I bobtailed to the factory, always took pride in keeping my truck neat and clean, but looking at some of the trucks and how they were dressed up I was in awe, much like you were. It was a great weekend and the neat thing was that all the trucks had a parade in Columbus, through the residential area as well as the main drag, the people that lined the streets were waving at us and nothing but big smiles. Often wondered how those trucks of that era as well as the trucks in the unveiling of the new Peterbilt 589 would have fared working in your neck of the woods, and I just smile. Thinking of that beautiful tanker going North or West of Prince George through a blizzard and salted roads. LOL. Cheers my friend.

You walk around a show, drool over the trucks and dont look at the clips or realise that there wasnt a single aero cabover. Loads of bullnose trucks. Surely from the event you now have a good idea of what you need for the show truck! Get it in the workshop, strip it all the way down and start from the frame up! Thats what I am waiting for now Mike, the truck nut (aka Peterbilt mike!)

Did i get a sense of dissapointment when the 589 was unveiled ? I know after seeing all those show trucks non working or working it had alot to live up to, And i know it'll be a good truck but it'll never be a great truck,. I feel sad for myself as i will never own/build anything like all those trucks on display , hard to pick a favourite but i think the truck with the 2 gliders on was my winner ,. And i couldnt fault any of the others either , Brilliant event, well done all attendees and peterbilt.
@bowslap Жыл бұрын
Mike, as a driver, I was afraid that the 589 was going to be as radical a departure from the traditional design as Kenworth’s W990. While the cab is from the 5-series model, the rest looks remarkably similar to the 389…I’ll admit to lamenting the end of the narrow cab and the peaked windshield, which dates back to the origins as Faegol…..but time marches on. The older models there are more my cup of tea, and I’m familiar with the dolled-up brown&tan 362, have ran with him before…

The 1976 Pete 359 Patriot was a special edition built for the U.S. bicentennial celebration. Not as spectacular as KW's bicentennial special editions, the VIT-200 Aerodyne, but still special. Peterbilt made 100 of the Patriot edition 359's and 100 Patriot 352's. As to the height of the 352, you are familiar with the 362, which was based off of the 352H. The 352H was something like 6 or 8 inches taller than the 352 to accommodate a larger radiator for engines of 400 to 600 hp. That was a painfully slow reveal of the new 589. I'm sure the one-piece, curved windshield will improve aerodynamics, but I bet a replacement windshield is going to be an expensive proposition, sort of like the Pete 362.
@mikethetrucknut Жыл бұрын
Okay, makes sense. I want to find one of the short 352s now. I liked that it was so short

@@mikethetrucknut There are likely some out there to be found, but they are old and I expect the majority are in pretty sad shape by now. Especially those that spent their working lives in areas where roads were salted during the winter months.

I see you're in heaven Mike ! 😂 I love your trucks , European trucks seem so boring in comparison . How many were actually work horses and how many were just show trucks ? @benmac940 Жыл бұрын
Just what I was thinking half of those probably don't do any work.
@cabovermike Жыл бұрын
Gliders were a weird way of getting a new looking truck, you put your old trucks engine ,axle ,gearbox ,rear suspension into the glider , i cant figure out how that works when those 4 components are all worn out on an old truck , it would be ok if you had a newer accident damaged doner truck, its also a way some people build a new glider truck to escape the usa elogs,.
