Just a small note: Laika was not the first animal in space, fruit flies were launched on an American rocket in 1947, reaching an altitude of 109 km. Two rhesus monkeys were sent to space by the Americans in 1948, but both died. The soviets got their first dogs into space in 1951. Through the 1950s, various animals were launched by the US and USSR, but the crucial factor is that none of them got into orbit until Laika. web.archive.org/web/20150627070832/archive.rubicon-foundation.org/xmlui/handle/123456789/9288 Laika died of overheating, but she did not literally burn to death. The spacecraft simply overheated.
