In 1836, west of the Mississippi was considered the Wild West and the Texas frontier was viewed as hell on earth. Crushed from the outside by Mexican armadas and attacked from within by ferocious Comanche tribes-no one was safe. But this was a time of bravery, a time to die for what you believed in and a time to stand tall against the cruel rule of the Mexican General Santa Anna (Martinez). The heroic General Sam Houston (Paxton), the rag tag Rangers and the legendary “Yellow Rose of Texas” lead this story of the human will to win against insurmountable odds. At the end, the Texas flags stood tall and victorious, claiming a piece of history for all eternity.
From the same team that brought us the multiple Emmy Award-winning and ratings-record breaking Hatfields & McCoys, Texas Rising is an 8-hour miniseries that details the Texas Revolution and the rise of the Texas Rangers. Texas Rising stars Bill Paxton, Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez, Thomas Jane, Crispin Glover, Rhys Coiro, Jeremy Davies, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Christopher McDonald, Max Thieriot, Chad Michael Murray, Trevor Donovan, Robert Knepper, Jeff Fahey, Rob Morrow and Kris Kristofferson, and is directed by two-time Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields, The Mission).

Then they go out there attacking, belittling, ridiculing the very people who allow them to do it without taking any action against it. It tells a lot about all other nations...

Not to be taken for historical value. I just started watching it and got several things wrong. Three condition were given to settlers to take land. 1.) To obey Mexican law 2.) To embrace Catholism and 3.) To abolish any means of slavery. Santana after the take of the Alamo gave the slaves their freedom. Steven Austin was a slave trader purchasing them on the black market from the pirate Jean Lafitte in New Orleans to trade up north crossing the Mexican territory of Texas. Santana deserves more recognition as a militan leader. He fought for the Reales (Spain), for independence (Mexico) the French (lost his leg) The Texas revolt, stopped the independence of Yucatán an the Mexican-American war. Any way I’ll continue watching it.

The Mexican army commanded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, in the battle of the Alamo, was not as big or powerful as the film pretends to teach, the Texans give fictitious figures, in addition the Mexican army, was only defending the sovereignty of the national territory , of some 'illegal immigrants' who wanted to appropriate the Mexican territory, Texas was a Mexican province that was being separated by the American immigrants, Santa Anna only went to defend the Mexican territory.

That's Marxist revisionist BS. Texians (at that time residents of the State of Coahuila y Texas) were not required to convert to Catholicism, after being encouraged to settle Mexico's northern colonies, and the issue of slavery had been settled entirely after the Convention of 1833. It was Santa Anna who had assumed dictatorial powers by repealing the federal constitution, creating a new Centralist Government through the Basis for the Reorganization of the Mexican Nation in 1835. Which had usurped unrestrained governmental power in Mexico City, transformed the sovereign Mexican State legislatures into French-style "departments," and demanded the dissolution of all State and local militias. When Zacatecas Governor Fransisco Salinas had refused, Santa Anna had personally led the Army into Zacatecas, routing the militia forces personally led by Salinas in the Battle of Guadalupe, and allowing his men "two days of lawlessness" in which around 4,000 Mexican Zacatecan women and children were butchered and some even raped by the "soldiers." After that, dragoons were sent into Coahuila y Texas, met by the militiamen of Gonzales who had successfilly delayed, attacked and repelled them. The Texas Revolution began as a part of the larger Mexican Federalist War, and from 1832 until March 2, 1836 the objective of the Texians was always legislative independence from Coahuila as a separate, sovereign Mexican State, with their own constitution, within the federal republic before independence was declared in response to the Centralist Government repealing the federal constitution and making war against its own citizens.

The reason the Mexican 🇲🇽 province of Texas was balkanized was because the central Mexican government of General Santa Anna declared slavery illegal in Texas. (Mexico had abolished slavery since 1810). This did not please at all the US-American immigrants who wanted to keep slavery as a form of work. The Mexican soldiers who defended the territorial integrity of Mexico in the battle of the Alamo are actually the good guys from a badly told story.

No offense, but I just don't get it. Why are Texans so proud? They think they're better than the rest of us that live on the North American continent. Texas gained its independence from Mexico and a 6,000 man army in 1836. La Ti Da. Do you know who the colonists on the East Coast fought 3 score years before? (That's 60 years) The f'ing British, a superpower in the world in the 18th century. My ancestors fought an army of over 100,000, plus the largest navy in the world at the time. There were more massacres in the colonies during the AMERICAN REVOLUTION than the likes of the Alamo and Goliad times 100! Don't get me wrong, I respect it... that's fine, but stop acting like you're better than everyone else in North America. I'd be proud too if my home state of Pennsylvania fought a long, tough war against the Bahamas or the Florida Keys. That's about what it equates to. Oh, and another FACT... Texas had independence for only 10 years, before they gave up their independence to join the United States in 1846. The US at the time did not want to add Texas to the Union, but Texas begged to be included. They were part of the Union until Feb, 1, 1861, when they seceded... Oh wait, then they LOST in the Civil War and were forced back into the Union. Keep praising yourself Texans, Not a very glorious history to be bragging about.

We do not think we are better, We just want to be our selves, But you hate us for calling ourselves Texans and being prideful in our history our flag and our culture. You hate and despise the way we talk or dress or what we eat, Our Country has been dead for generations, Many of us have come to grip that our Republic will never come back ever again, Others still dream of the day when the Texan flag is the only flag flying over our heads once again, But in the end of the day we just want to be our selves, And carry on our history our culture and our way of thinking from generation to generation, And for some of us if that means being hostile or rude. You posted this comment over 4 years ago, You may not respond or even care. But that is the way i see it. I don't care what you call me or if you insult me or not, I just want to be a Texan.

WHY TEXAS WAS BALKANIZED 1- The only truth for which the Mexican 🇲🇽 province of Texas was Balkanized, was because the Mexican central government of General Santa Anna declared slavery illegal in Texas. 2- Mexico prohibited the use of slavery in Texas as a form of work, Santa Anna abhorred slavery and the father of the nation of Mexico, Miguel Hidalgo, had abolished it in 1810. 3- The rebels US-Americans, many of them illegal immigrants in Mexican territory, did not like it at all, the Mexican law that eliminated slavery in Texas, quickly rose up in arms and declared Texas independent, US-American immigrants wanted to keep slavery as a legal form of work. 4- General Santa Anna, president of Mexico, did not allow the secession of Texas, since it was a Mexican 🇲🇽 province recognized in the constitution, it had no right to separate. 5- Santa Anna's army was an army poor in resources and weapons, it was not like Hollywood that shows it as a powerful army with the latest technology weapons, in reality the rebels used new weapons financed by Washington and Mexico fought with weapons of the time of its independence. 6- The Mexican soldiers were in his territory, the invaders were the US-Americans. 7- Thus began an armed conflict between both parties that led to the secession of Texas. 8- The Mexicans are the villains of a story badly told by the official historiography. 9- After the annexation of Texas to the United States, Texas was created as a slave state. 10- Before the civil war, many African-American slaves from Texas crossed the Rio Grande to be safe in Mexico from their captors, Mexico protected them with its anti-slavery laws. That's the truth, why don't they tell it?

Vic Bondi -There was slavery all around the world at that time coming from many races, even doing it to their own people. A lot of my Irish ancestors came to America to escape slavery that was done to them by the English. If that which you are saying is true it sure wasn't done by Sam Houston and his people since Houston didn't believe in slavery, he had freed blacks fighting along side him. Once Sam and the others got it then many from other states came to Texas, the whole new frontier thing.

There are some scenes in this series that I found watchable but overall, I am not impressed with this. Highly fictionalized portrayal of events, bad acting, stereotypes, and inaccurate geographical locations. Seriously?? Mountains in southeast Texas?? I've lived in Texas almost my whole life (I currently reside in Houston), been to nearly every part of the state and I can tell you that no such mountains exist here. The only mountains I've seen are near the El Paso area but from my memory, they don't even look anything like these! >:( Imperfect as the 2004 Alamo movie may be, it was a way better and way more historically accurate depiction of the Texas Revolution than this. Not to mention it was actually shot IN Texas.
