Tip for people trying to type flag emoji in the comments: you need to use the regional indicator tags (regular letters don't work) and for subregions you have to start them with 🏴 and end them with the cancel tag character (the one with the code U+E007F) which is unfortunately very hard to copy-paste.

People have already tried that it takes FOREVER to become independent. It's like the same system as copyright on yobtube. Unless you have a proper battle and force the un to do something immediately, you have to wait years, just for the original country to decline and cause the process to restart. I found the Texas flag emoji 🏴󠁵󠁳󠁴󠁸󠁿on Emojipedia and pasted it into WhatsApp and it worked! Just out of curiosity, I tried New Mexico and it just showed up as a black flag. 🏴󠁵󠁳󠁮󠁭󠁿 By the way, I pasted both of these into this comment, so if they ever do support state flags on whatever platform you're using, they'll show up.

Good video. A major reason the Unicode consortium doesn’t want to add any new flags is that despite being probably the most requested new emojis they’re actually the least used category of emoji, and like you said they’d have to code literal thousands if they want to be fair. Emoji itself is fairly controversial in Unicode internally, with many viewing it as a simple waste of time and resources that should instead be dedicated to encoding endangered and historical writing systems, as well as things like additional CJKV characters.

I'd argue that a lot of people who use the Chilean flag as the Texan one, don't realise their mistake. There's a truckload of hyper-patriotic, dont-tread-on-me pfp people, that sincerely think and use the Chilean flag as a Texan flag. Sometimes, whenever I'd feel a little down, I would seek out these people and point out their misteak. It was always funny whenever they'd swiftly remove the Chilean flag form their Twitter pronouns/bio, or if they'd defend their choice.

It's hilarious that the Unicode Consortium didn't want to touch the hot potato of deciding what countries count but were perfectly happy to propose Han Unification without any understanding of the different ways Chinese characters are used across Korea, Vietnam, China, Japan, and the other countries that use them to some extent or another. It's so bad that on your iPhone you will get the wrong characters for whichever language's keyboard you install second (e.g. if you install Mandarin and then Japanese you will have your Japanese rendered with simplified Chinese characters even though the Japanese characters started diverging from the Chinese ones several centuries ago). tl;dr Unicode picks weird things to try to be sensitive about given their history.

Han unification got started way back in Unicode 1.0 (1992), and at that time the Consortium had somehow deluded itself into believing that all scripts used on Earth could fit into 65,536 characters, if you just leave off all the characters that aren't "modern" enough to be widely used. Unicode was not (originally) intended to cover all characters that anyone could want to use for any purpose, it was merely supposed to be good enough that you could send an email to somebody in another country without getting back mojibake. The idea was that you'd have a national encoding and also Unicode for international compatibility, and in that context Han-unified CJK is better than mojibake so mission accomplished. In retrospect, this was a bad plan that was never going to work (the West, broadly speaking, rapidly abandoned ISO-8859 in favor of Unicode, and then network effects forced it on everyone else), and Unicode has pretty thoroughly pivoted to encoding "everything," but the Unicode Stability Policy makes it rather difficult to undo unification now (hence the introduction of the Ideographic Variation Database as the next-best solution, so at least it is now possible to indicate which character you want, in principle).

Point taken, but I think they regret it now and wish history had been different. The “fix” as such will always require a bit more effort from the platforms, but there aren’t as many companies in that space anymore either. So it’s a fight that can be won. “Please add my flag” became a problem of scale rather quickly and obviously. I would never have guessed it until my local Unicode expert pointed it out to me. I was vehemently pro-“add this flag NOW” until I wasn’t.

Fun fact about UK flag emoji: very few emoji fonts actually support them. They also don't want to because one of the four countries, Northern Ireland, doesn't have an official flag and picking any of the unofficial ones is seen as a political statement. For context; the three most commonly used flags for NI are the Red Hand of Ulster, the Flag of Ulster, and St Patrick's Saltire. But neither the regional government nor Westminster nor Dáil Éireann have agreed upon a flag that satisfies all parties. Thus when a flag emoji is needed for sporting events, different websites and organisations use one of the three above or the Union Flag. And some allow the athlete to pick which flag is shown.

It’s crazy to me that there are flag emojis for tiny regions of other countries (like the Åland Islands, which are in Finland and only has a population of like 30,000) but US states don’t have flag emojis. US minor outlying territories even have them like the Virgin Islands and Guam! It makes no sense

I mean people in American states don’t invest their identity in their state but in being Americans. Whereas most regions in the old world usually have their own identity separate from the nation (which is a very new concept). Or they have an identity fitting with a nation that they aren’t actually a part of, and so using that nation’s flag to represent them could cause problems like separatism. I think it makes sense.

Can confirm that Discord's emoji system doesn't adhere to that typing standard. It just assumes you're doing country codes and converts the letters to flags if you punch in a matching pair of letters without the whole 🏴❌ container.

Would anything change once a territory with an already existing flag emoji becomes a country? For example, Greenland is well on its way to gaining independence soon but since it already has a flag emoji, I assume no changes would be made to the ISO 3166 since countries are on the same leverage as dependent territories

ISO 3166 would probably not change the code. My guess is it might change some other information about the territory/country, but that wouldn't affect the emoji. Some of the dependent territories in ISO 3166-1 don't have subdivisions in ISO 3166-2, though, which might change if those territories became independent.

Don't forget. Unicode is not the issue, the issue is what emojis the companies actively choose to make. This could EASILY be fixed. For us iphone users, all apple has to do is tell their staff to simply make the emoji for the state flags, but they instead decided there needs to be a third gender for every single little emoji people. The software allows them to make the state flags, they just actively choose against it.

The genderless emoji are recommended for general interchange. Encoding-wise, the genderless emoji are actually the original default ones, and it's the man and woman ones that are new. Of course, it's not like Apple/Google etc lack the funding to do both those and the state flags.

I feel like Unicode was premature in a lot of their decisions and now they're stuck with them. In some ways, it's worse than the weird code page stuff we had before. Though, can you imagine the pain of starting over now? What an absolute mess.

@@SignoreGalilei For sure *one* bad standard is better than *100* bad standards, but it could still be better. There's certainly a lot of duplication that should not have happened merely because multiple languages use similar symbols. I'd love to see a new font format for that matter which would allow these standards to not duplicate so much. It's especially bad when a Unicode encoded URL can be used to phish people using lookalike characters.

@@Liggliluff The whole set, no. But two characters that look exactly the same would naturally have the same code point for either set. That is what makes the most sense and would eliminate an avenue of phishing and wouldn't present a burden for users of either alphabet.

Boo, Texas needs its flag emoji on iPhone. Like, no other US State is as obsessed with their flags as we are. It’s everywhere. It flies at the same level as the US flag. It’s on everything. We say our own pledge to it in schools every morning. If coming to the US is jarring and alarming for Europeans for seeing the US Flag everywhere, it should be way more if they come to Texas because we have both pasted just everywhere.
