Let me say this I looooove Grambling. World Faaaaamed Family here. I enjoyed both bands. I enjoyed what TSU brought to the bar b que. And I feasted on what Grambling brought to the main course. Two different styles both gave you something to eat and get full from. Loved it.

Ok now I know folks have their own opinions but tbh this was a good battle. You can hear the improvement in each band each week. They're getting better weekly. GSU has been more consistent yes, but this battle here is one of the best battles I've seen all season honestly. Both of these bands did well. Txsu nor GSU sounded bad at all nor was this a one sided battle an song selections were great for a homecoming battle. Good job ocean an WF and good luck with the rest of y'all season.

I'm a TXSU alumnus and an Houstonian and this has been a concern for some years now about our band program. Not enough scholarships going out? Because we should easily have numbers like SU and JSU especially being one of the best hbcus and one of the two main hbcus in Texas and being in Houston (4th largest city) smh

These two performed well. Small issues from both but just like everyone else in the swac small issues but you can see the improvement from both schools both have a great future ahead ahead you can tell gsu numbers will be nice again next season hopefully they can get like 2004 status with 290-300 members . But these two performed well. The fifth didn't disappoint and was imo one of the better SWAC fifths this year. Next to GSU vs JSU.

Rnd 1: TSU > GSU Rnd 2: TSU > GSU Rnd 3: GSU > TSU (but barely. Only cause GSU played a song I don't usually hear.) Rnd 4: TSU > GSU Rnd 5: TSU > GSU (If GSU would have started the song the way it ended, I might've given it to GSU.) Rnd 6: TSU > GSU (TSU came in really confident with that first note. Impressive! Whatever GSU played in response needs to be scrapped!) Rnd 7: No winner (I don't too much like the song TSU played, even tho it killed GSU with Technicality. I'd give GSU credit, but I hear that song wayyyy too much.) Rnd 8: DRAW (I'm not particularly interested in Rap songs played by marching bands. But TSU smashed it. GSU started great, but held on to the song wayyyy too long whereas the best parts BEEN over! I was especially dissatisfied that the Tubas. The Bass was extremely lost and nowhere to be found. SURELY everyone is not playing with all those horns in the stands!) Rnd 9: DRAW (TSU introduced what seemed to be a great arrangement then went into a Tuba feature. Played a basic few bars then went back into a Tuba Feature. STOP SELECTING SONGS LIKE THIS! IF ALL THERE IS IS A BEAUTIFUL INTRODUCTION and the rest is stretching the song with a Tuba feature so you can build to the 16 bar Crank Section into an outro, IT'S NOT A SONG TO PLAY AND SHOULDN'T BE IN YOUR BOOK! Okay, MAYBE, but you shouldn't have more than 3 of these! As far as GSU, them tubas so muddy and sad. They need serious work. They should lose on this alone.) WINNER: Texas Southern

@@DrRDW no there was not any involvement. He never was on campus to be hired by administration. The arrangements are nothing like southern. The Ocean doesn't use extreme or many cluster chords between trombones or euphoniums like su. Lack of trumpets is a numbers problem. Some of it has to with where they've been recruiting the heaviest vs getting INTO Texas Southern University. Our standards are different now and so is our cost of attendance. I was taught by original Ocean of Soul members like Sam Jackson, the founder Ben Butler and Ronald Thornton rip. No su alum should ever be hired at 3100 Cleburne. Period.

Surprisingly Texas Southern actually sounds somewhat collegiate now. Nice improvements made by them. They’re finally beginning to sound like a college band. Both sound better. Grambling has come a long way. Work on stamina... Again lip slurs and btone missed notes. Ocean good job cleaning up and working on phrasing and intonation and articulation, especially on Liberian Girl. Euphoniums work on better intonation. Trumpets work on tone... Lip slurs I cannot preach that enough. Both bands sound more like ensembles now.
