Instead you're paying more overall and not getting the safety test. Lawmakers fooled the public into thinking it's actually gone away when they can't legislate emissions testing as it's a federal matter. Don't expect emissions to stay at 18.50 either, there are several groups including lobbies and the DPS to increase the emissions fee to 40. None of which would of changed if they kept safety inspections. The driving public was tricked!

@hjc0706 The emissions tests are only required in counties that fail to meet EPA air quality standards. That's federal, and there's nothing Texas can do about it. What will probably happen is that the shops that relied on safety inspections for income will either have to charge more for emissions testing or go out of business. There's no standard fee for emissions. Right now, it averages $18.50 in Houston and Dallas but $12 in Austin and El Paso. OTOH, my property taxes decreased by over $200, so I'm not getting my panties in a wad over the price of a double Whataburger every 365 days.

I live in a state where there's no inspection of cars and it seems just fine. Oh sure there's some beaters running around, but the brakes work, the vehicles are paid for, and there's no difference in accident rates. The cell phone has contributed a 400% increase in accidents though.......😶‍🌫️

Texas Inspection Stations do not inspect Tires And half the time they dont check the brakes either, most of them just check the lights function and it passes smog, so what's the point again? I think that shop operator is just worried about his loss of state revenue for inspections. We got bigger problems here in Houston with the lack of traffic enforcement and tons of uninsured drivers running around with Fake Paper Dealer Plates on their cars and cops doing nothing about it.

I failed a safety inspection because my tires made contact with the frame turning at a high angle. I went across the street and passed because they don't drive the vehicle at that place. I also have an airbag light on in one of my vehicles and it passes safety inspection because they don't check the airbag system 😂

As somebody that works in the auto service industry, I will tell you I absolutely hate doing state inspections. However, I agree with that gentleman that it’s gonna make a lot of cars less safe because it takes a lot for me to fail a car and I have to on a regular basis. Like he said, you can look at a tire from the outside and it looks fine and then you put it in the air in the inside of the tire has radial coming out of it, which is gonna be a blowout soon.

No blue sticker = no registration. The two step one sticker was a PITA for car enthusiasts who had a vehicle they wanted to renew, but couldn’t because the car wasn’t road worthy when the time for inspection came. We literally would wait to pass inspection before doing anything on a car out of fear that it wouldn’t be ready in time. This means that out of the ten cars we own, only 4 are registered because they wouldn’t pass when their registration expired. In other words, there are 6 cars that the state could have received money from, but the two step one sticker prevented that, every single year that this program was in effect.

My 2018 car and 2015 bike must pass an annual inspection here in NC, but my 1987 b2200 does not because it is more than 35 years old. Bassackwards in my opinion. We don't have emissions in my county. Those that ride around in dangerous cars could care less about whether they have a current inspection. They will drive it anyway.

I still wanna know how this will work out with salvage repaired vehicles? If you buy a salvaged vehicle at auction, you get a pink title. The car is techjically classified as a "part" and not a vehicle. Once it's repaired back to road worthyness and INSPECTED, then you can apply for the blue salvaged title. @@hjc0706but any out of state vehicle that has never been registered in Texas MUST be inspected before it can get registered. So January, if I buy a car with an OK title, I would still need to have it inspected because they use state inspection as a way to verify the VIN and other such details. If there is any issue with the title or VIN, you have to trailer it to an actual state investigator station, where some judge has to approve things. This is what we had to do with a TX titled truck that had the wrong year on the title. They don’t have someone regularly on staff, despite living in a huge metroplex, so you basically have to schedule an appointment and wait a month for the inspectors to travel to your district, which was an hour away in a different county. It’s not like you can have a local police officer, or even the DMV walk out to your car and verify it. They want you to spend 1-3 hours trying to get it inspected yourself. I’m just trying to avoid having to deal with the other scenario because even waiting 1-3 hours locally, on a day I choose is better than what I had to do with the truck.

I don't deal with registration side of things, we do the inspection side. I do remember hearing there is supposed to be X days you're supposed to register the car in Texas when out of state. Your local inspection station is already privatized. A state inspection consisted of 2 parts, the safety test and emissions test. The only thing they changed was ridding of the safety test, and charging you more for your registration fee to "make up" the revenues lost. So overall you're paying more than you did previously and not getting your vehicle checked. Lawmakers fooled everyone into thinking they "got rid of" inspections, when in fact they're still there for the VAST majority of people and we're going to still have to pay their "safety replacement fee" that costs more than the safety test was!

emission test is stupid normal items should be inspected lights .brakes e brake bad change if you don't pass emission test you cant drive the vehicle for 25 years at least near Houston but you can have bald tires and things ready to fall off the car

This does not apply to all of Texas. The biggest counties still have to get them. Which is basically pointless but i live harris county
