My 80 yo father had to fly to a funeral of one of his brothers. He was a pipe smoker, and never considered that his tamper would be an illegal item. Consequently, the last gift his deceased wife ever bought him was 'willfully surrendered' since he didn't realize he could mail it home to himself (he was also hard of hearing, and didn't understand when they told him). I'm sure an 80 yo man will hijack a plane with a pipe cleaner.

My late father gave me a double lock blades knife years before he passed. Somehow it got through tsa at KRAP, but on my return flight tsa @ KSAT kept wanding my leather jacket. That jacket had so many pockets, but they finally located it. I was shocked that I had forgotten that it was in there, after all, I was an ex-airline employee. I explained all of the above and that I could not loose that knife. The local police working in the airport went out before the tsa area and got one of the mailing envelope and handed it to me. I was in shock that he did that for me so that I would not have to go back through if I went to get it myself. I filled it out and he took it back out a and I watched him drop it in the bin. It had a tear-off tag with information about the process and to watch for an email. It arrived in the mail about a week later. I still have it, but not my dad. 💞

Surrendered? Don’t you mean confiscated? Nope. Calling them “willfully surrendered” must be what the attorneys make them say, so they can legally keep the money from selling other people’s possessions.
@rickjames5534 ай бұрын
No sir. Confiscated would mean they didn't have a choice. Surrendered would mean they had a choice, they may not like the choices, but a choice none the less. If you are early enough, they will let you just go put it back in your car. But most people don't want to, so they just surrender it.
@DeannaR23311654 ай бұрын
@@rickjames553 Yeah, but people cannot go put things back in their car if they got a ride and were dropped off. The two choices are surrender XYZ item, or don't fly. They are not "illegally taken". The law stated that you can't bring certain items into the secured area, including the aircraft, and that such items may be seized if the owner tries to do so. The chance to mail it back to yourself is voluntary and not mandatory. Moral of the story? Don't bring any banned items with you. Put them in your checked baggage.

What’s interesting about this place is other than the “voluntarily surrendered items” the tax payer has purchased and these items are sold back to the tax payer. It’s the same with federal prisons. The taxpayer pays for these prisons that produce goods that are sold at inflated prices to other government agencies and then taken in bulk by another company, like DRMO, and then sold back to the tax payer.

The solution to your problem is to try to read the list of banned items. If you have questions, ask one of the agents (there are usually some supervisors around) before you get in the line. That way you haven't violated the secure area and you have a chance to mail it back to yourself, as someone stated. Don't blame the TSA agents for following the rules.
