This brought the sounds and smell of our local shoemaker's shop rushing back. My favorite errand as a child was going to the shoemaker's to drop off or pick up our shoes. The magic of the ticket given when you dropped off, saved carefully in order to redeem our renewed shoes the next week. Agonizing over whether or not Mommy had given you enough money ( it was always right - how did she know?) Great memories lost to the generation that just throws stuff away and buys something new!

Suzanne , I have the same memories as you , loved the smell and was amazed at what could be repaired , and yes this throw it away generation sucks , not only throwing away shoes , cars , good clothing but relationships also .

I still try to find cobblers to repair my shoes. I worked in construction and mining and my work boots are expensive. I would rather have a pair of repaired boots than buy new ones every year or so.

This story is incredibly sad. The father and son of the fallen soldier plod on because they don't know what else to do. I wish them both peace and happiness, whatever comes their way. Blessings 💓💓💓
