I didn't cry at this. Instead I felt a cold, rapidly expanding emptiness at the core of my being. I didn't know what to think, or how to feel. It didn't matter even if I did. Oftentimes when we depict or think about the end of humanity, we imagine ourselves going out with a glorious bang, in the arms of those around us. It's a comforting idea, where in our final moments we relish in the best of ourselves, and can share our fate with everyone else. Furthermore, rarely are we ever responsible for our own reckoning- even when we think of nuclear armageddon, it's never us or anyone we relate to who pulls that trigger. We can always comfortably distance ourselves from our own destruction. Texhnolyze completely shatters that preconception. It shows us an end that isn't patiently waiting for sudden disaster to sweep life from beneath us, but a long, tormented descent into meaninglessness, which concludes with the drawn out, lonely death of one man. Watching this, you are forced to accept that the end to everything we've so widely feared in the cultural consciousness is itself, nothing short of another textbook romanticism we've adopted to make ourselves feel cosy about what the REAL end could look like. Moreover, that loneliness is a choice Ichise makes- killing Kano may seem like the morally obvious thing to do, but what do morals matter anymore now that the human race is over? Is a lonely death a price worth paying in a world without morals? Ichise doesn't even think about this, and that moment I believe encompasses the series creator's wish to create "the ultimate hero". A man whose morals matter even when they don't. It's easy to argue that Texhnolyze attempts to demonstrate the futility of self-actualisation, that it is the ultimate embodiment of nihilism, and yet in this scene, it presents you with the unarguable truth- that despite everything the show has made you feel up until this point, you still see justice in killing Kano. Ultimately, you are human.
@psionicsknight66517 жыл бұрын
That was beautiful. Seriously, it was. To be honest, this interpretation reminds me of the film Snowpiercer, since some people feel the true message of that movie is that tyranny should always be opposed, even if the tyrants are responsible for preserving humanity.

The best part about this anime is it reels you in with these ideas of nihilism, and makes you comfortable with accepting death and realizing there's not point in an emotionally charged life... And then the ending makes a U-turn and makes you feel like shit for being nihilistic like the people on the surface, who had no passion for life like Ichise, Yoshii, and Onishi. Brilliant work of art.

Behind all the death, drama and hopelessness, I'd argue Texhnolyze is a show about rejecting apathy, and taking control of our destiny. Those who did, like Ichise and Yoshii, were able to die honorable deaths, because they rejected said apathy, making of their life what they felt was best for them. This is a message to all of us: if we sit and wait for something to happen, nothing will; we have to fight, so even if we fail, we can go out knowing we did our best.
@johnnyscocktaeil78753 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's why I didn't find Texhnolyze sad at all, because it's just saying that no matter where you are, you can always make your life meaningful. Death comes naturally, it's presented on two separate perspectives, in Lux and Lukuss, it's showing that both WILL end no matter what, but it's someone's choice to find their purpose before that happens, or just accept themselves as an empty, meaningless soul. Texhnolyze is proving you that you can do something about it ❤️
@tryptaminus3 жыл бұрын
I think other characters rejected apathy too, its just that they thought there was some transcendental ideal that they could find meaning in. Shinji in freedom, Kano in his fucked up evolution, Onishi in order and leadership, etc. Ichise and Yoshii were different in their perspectives of the world in that they knew entirely that the world was absolutely meaningless, yet they still keep living according to their carnal feelings and desires, the true way to find fulfillment and purpose as humans. I thought that was the point the show really was trying to make, the virtue in charging straight into the meaningless abyss and flourishing in the glory of existence, rather than shying away from the futility and nihilism of everything to chase some specter of higher purpose.
@EmersionX2 жыл бұрын
This idea is simple, it can be said much shorter - do not exist, but live no matter what. This meaning is very relevant now, we live in an era of a decline in culture, true aesthetics, crises and the active destruction of HUMAN civilization.

The way I've always seen it is that despite how horribly his new life ended, and despite Ran's grim prediction coming true, Ichise is smiling because he was glad for the good moments he did get. The experience was worth more to him than the outcome. Though I do think he passes on in the end as well. It would only be miserable to persist in such a dark and hollow world.

This anime goes to show us that as bad as the world really is, and as how messed up humanity is to each other, living a life of no conviction or emotion is still worse than being what we truly are: beings full of emotion and life, humans. Yes, there might be pain, immeasurable pain. The world might come down so hard on us that we might even consider leaving it forever sooner than normal. But, at least then we would have lived those moments genuinely and passionately, while finding some gold nuggets of true happiness in between. At least then we would have died with all that is us at our core, including all the moments that we lived and the feelings that we felt. PS: I'm not a native English speaker, so please excuse any grammatical mistakes.

The surface (Hades) seemed to be the inevitable endpoint for humanity, even with the violent people around, as it was only with the conflict and scarcity Lux provided that the violence erupted. Lux was unique for its lack of complacent people, but I don't think the people with the survival genes were culled out of the surface population. And then another thing to consider is that Lux succeeded - its inhabitants got to live forever. It wasn't in a form that humans would find meaningful, but the goal, create a society that maximized the ability to stay alive, was accomplished. It was not just the violence that destroyed them, but wanting to live so badly that they got rid of the things that made life worth living. Maybe you need the willingness to keep something going forever, but the ability to let go of the things that cannot.

spoilers: Most anime threaten "everything will end" as a threat or a premonition, but it hardly ever happens. What hit so hard with Texhnolyze is that it actually did happen. I think we need a few "bad" or "sad" anime endings to keep perspective of this threat relevant. It means so little when the "bad" ending of everyone dying never happens, but makes you understand how truly sad and heartbreaking it is when you actually see it. Texhnolyze made me realize how horrible and heartbreaking "the end" can really be.

They made 0 new expressions, almost 0 intellectual work, while "Texhnolyze" is a true art, which express experience and intellectual work of it's creators, it can give valuable information to viewers. Also you made ultimate simplifications and generalizations with your arguments, which is not good. However partially true. But both works use philosophy of nihilism, existentialism and absurdism. Damn, even feminism. So they are not so opposite at all. The thing is "ergo trash" is awful realization, preudo-intellectual fairy tale in the form of dystopia for dummies and infants, while "Texhnolyze" is a serious realistic depiction of dystopia and a work of art for serious audience, who understand at least something in life, who have enough experience. "Texhnolyze" is a superior work in the anime kind of art, outstanding as a take on these topics and in Dystopia genre. And yes, it has one of the most precise and natural endings. Only optimist (optimism equals infinite stupidity) can think of hope, leap of faith and other ending. Human nature. Read at least all works by Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Mainlander, then come back for a discussion. Best wishes in fighting ignorance.

I really wasn't connecting to this series when i watched it but I really wanted to see how it all came together. By the time the ending came it had grabbed my heart and this song made me want to curl up and fade away. Good anime.

I actually haven't seen this anime. I only know this song from a cd I have by Yoko Ishida that had this song on it, and I absolutely love it! (the cd and the song) I know somone is going to tell me to watch it. I think this song should be reason enough. I'll watch it eventually.

100% the perfect quote. I wouldn't be surprised if the story was partially inspired by this.

This is one of the most beautiful and saddest songs that I have heard and I have to recognize that a lot of bands of DSBM does not have lyric so well created like this :´( By the way that final was .... I do not have words to describe how it destroyed my soul

Is it wrong that I feel that this show and it’s incredible ending would go over the heads of everyone I know in real life?

Perfect quote for this song and anime, "This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper" T. S. Eliot's The Hollow Men.

The ending was like a brick right in the face, like when u feel so nostalgic or broken heart or something similar, painful. You actually can feel each work she sings asking yourself this can't end like this, come on!!! T_T

I have yet to see an anime end as perfectly as Texhnolyze did. SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! It's weird though. Although the ending was supposed to be depresing with the extintion of humanity and all but I felt a sense of renewed hope and I got a warm feeling from it. As if it felt like it was okay that humanity was ending. It was strange but I never have felt so much from an ending to an anime before.

Yeah my bad lol. Sad thing is though no one really wants to watch this sad masterpiece. People are more into stuff like Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, or Attack on Titan etc.

parag3247 There will always be retards that would rather watch DxD or Snk than watch some great shows like Tex,Lain or Ergo Proxy. It's a sad truth but hidden gems are meant to stay hidden

Fethi Ben Saad Yeah lol. If you think about it this show is the exact opposite of Attack on Titan. AoT tried so hard to bring in viewers/readers with its action, deaths, dystopian storyline etc. Whereas this show does the exact opposite...And yet i feel it was better in everyway.

+parag3247 I dont think AoT and Texhnolyze should be compared in that way because they are aiming for completely different things. AoT, as you said, tried to get it's audience with intense action scenes and the fact that the supporting cast was always getting killed, creating the illusion of danger for the MCs. It is shounen and thus still gives the viewer gratification, while Texhnolyze rarely gives us anyting like that. It doesn't build up hope or tries to mess with our expectations like AoT, it just presents us the end of humanity and ask the question what it was all for. So AoT is just a show meant to be watched for fun and excitment, while texhnolyze is here to ask us questions. With that difference I don't think comparing them will amount to much.

Which is why i prefer Texhnolyze. It's my opinion but think of it this way. Michael Bay's Tranformers or Christopher Nolan's Inception. 2 different films but if we do have to compare them do we even have think twice. I am not disagreeing with you though.

How is that not insanity? Accepting ones fate and fading into oblivion, versus charging into it full bore... No, i think that insanity is a perfect way to frame it, because the entire show seems encapsulated by it.
