In my opinion, launching the kite is the most critical time of the sport when most accidents (and deadly one) occur. I think it's a very good thing that more and more instructors and Pro riders start to show and adopt the "no hook before checking lines" (like Philippe Ancelin or Petar). It is by far the safest way of launching.

KZbin need more this kind of videos! I agree to use the unhooked method and don’t touch the bar until the kite is in the correct position, and always start downwind of it

Totally agree it’s always the kiters fault if a launch goes wrong, not the launcher. There are so many kiters that try to blame the launcher. It’s most often the mouthy ones that think they’re “pro” yet still can’t find the edge of the wind window.

And you may also find the old vid from Philippe Ancelin (in English😜) where he explains most principles of a secure launch! I must admit that he forgot to advise to launch up to noon very slowly as you perfectly recommended. 🤗 kzbin.info/www/bejne/en26oZmwicuMh6c

I believe it's good choice for protecting your channel of any copy right claims in the future. Anyway your choice. Keep my clip, I'm happy you used it for correct educations meter 🙏🙌

Nice video man. but i would suggest with the last scenario don't fly your kite above the launcher assistants head, move down wind and in the case of lull or death roll it is not above someone's head.
@EpicGust
@EpicGust Жыл бұрын
You are right, fully agree. It is not the best example. In my experience On the road, we always have to face some problems, space-wise, or other things you cant do everything perfectly. Here cos i put the kite deliberately a bit deeper in the window - so it shoots out and not stalls for sure, the fact that it will be above my launcher is almost not avoidable. The launcher has to move away upwind asap too that is not menioned so far. If the rider goes downwiind to avoid the launcher being under the kite, the kite might stalls(light wind) or little slack(gusty wind) on the line creates something funny. If the rider is not able to keep the kite steady after a launch, for any skill reason, then go back to learning day one.

Interesting but in your video example. Shouldn't you take off your kite closer to the water rather than having your kite closer to the water?

@@EpicGust At the end of the video you make a presentation of a reference take-off. In this presentation, you take off with your kite as close to the water as possible and you (the pilot) far from the water... it seems to me that it would be safer to do the opposite and therefore to put you (the pilot) as close to the water as possible and place your kite far from the water.
@EpicGust
@EpicGust Жыл бұрын
@@remibarbe I used to think the same! but now i am curious, what makes YOU think that it is safer to be that way (rider closer to the water , kite is further)
@remibarbe
@remibarbe Жыл бұрын
@@EpicGust It's safer to be in the sea... being close to the sea means you're in the sea quickly, so you're in a safer place quickly. Also, in most cases, what is beyond the beach is less safe (car parks, trees, roads...) than the sand. It is better to be close to the water because if you have a problem and you are towed on the beach, you have more time to stop before arriving on what is after the beach (car parks, trees, roads...).
@EpicGust
@EpicGust Жыл бұрын
@@remibarbe True! I was thinking and being taught the exact same thing and it sort of make sense - works in many many cases. Now consider the following. It is the kite that needs better wind so in case you are in the water the kite is closer to the obstacles you listed - the wind is better closer to the sea. You might be in the sea but the direction that the kite can pull you now is towards all the dangers! If the wind is strong - the kite might pulls you straight away. Or if you make a mistake. It is better to get pulled towards the sea where there is less (ideally nothing) to hit. Strong wind nr2 - if you are on the water side and the kite is on the beach, you have to go and pass 12oclock where in gusty conditions you might get lifted, or maybe you have a tendency to shoot the kite to 12 and again - teabagging. not ideal. I am not saying that your way is wrong! On Many beaches i use the way you explained. Lets say on a huge sandy open beach. With no obstacles. But i let go the idea that one thing is the best over all. It always depends. I started to do the kite towards the water in this particular beach (costa rica), but even later many times it makes sense. just dont be rigid on this, use common sense, see the obstacles, see others, or kites tendencies to stall, or room for yourself to move upwind if needed. On this beach, super windy, and often narrow (tide dependent) and where I am standing is literally a windshadow or very bad wind least to say. Many folks went there by default ,as you said. causing the kite stall as they lifted it and then higher getting a gust that yanked them towards the beach, now they move the kite fast to 12.. i guess you see now! with students (i was the launcher.) I needed to avoid the smallest chance of mistakes. Once the stud found the edge of the wind window they hooked in, i told them not to touch the bar and i gently put the kite down on the water (i was in knee deep water) the kite simply sit there. now they could walk towards the water (pick up the board etc) enter the water , sill leave the kite down. i told them to lie on the belly, so they started to bodydrag away without touching the bar. once they were a a line length away from the beach i told them to pick up the kite. Now even if they made a 3-9 move the kite and the student is safe too.

Hi Zolty Nice remind😎 You may also find another vid from Pierre, a French substitute of Philippe Ancelin (OLK) who updated the first vid of Philippe with same concepts. He also highlights the key reasons to set your lines downwind from the kite, which is not a fully applied method everywhere! It is in French (sorry😜) but you may have « some » translation to English in YT parameters … not perfect but probably understandable🤗 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mofTZo1pZ8trhbM

Cool, thanks! I seen his concept I think years ago I got this idea from him. I am not showing this as mine, rather an idea that become my habit to show and to teach too. People still giving me a weird look when i tell them not to hold the bar. I put his link in to the description. What he does it is gold for all of us. never enough to repeat it!

Well done, and good analysis! Thanks. I still see a lot of instructors missing some of these important points when they're teaching. We've synthesized a launch procedure that incorporates most of these. The only things I would suggest adding here are a 360° check, and a conscious back line tension check (looking for equal and sufficient tension in the back lines, and to fine- tune the best location to stand) just before launching. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHbXhZdnp8R4hqc Subscribed.
