Thank you for this video. My husband and I will be attempting this instead of sand paint to match a textured wall!

good luck Leah! I have flipped several houses and done a lot of drywalling. Never had anyone complain about my texturing. The drywall pros laugh at this approach, but that's the dirty secret of drywall: nobody except drywall pros gives a sh!t about beautiful texture!

Can you do this to a foyer (hallway) ceiling???
@MorganBrown Жыл бұрын
Sure. Yep I have textured a lot of ceilings using this method! Imperfections tend to be harder to spot on the ceiling in my experience

@@MorganBrown…thanks for your feedback. I bought an apt that had a couple of ceiling imperfections on the ceiling entrance, that drove me crazy (OCD). So, I figured I do this …and whallaaa…it actually came out nice , together with a set of 4 canless recessed integrated LED lights. PS: sorry for the late response Morgan 👊🏻

Joaquin, appreciate it! I have a couple challenges ahead of me - matching texture. I have to match an orange peel knockdown and a scraped popcorn texture. I may have to buy a can and hope for the best

Your using it the wrong way! Mix you 5 gallons are one box put about 25% water mix well to a soup are a gravy thickness Roll on wall with a 3/4 inch lamb skin roller cover the thickness you like thin are heavy but roll it out consistently not a big area so it don't set up to fast. Then roll it with your spaghetti roller. Hope that helps. 50 years experience

Can u do this if ur walls are painted already
@MorganBrown10 ай бұрын
Yes! Applying the texture will not loosen the paint. At least I have not seen this happen. You just apply the texture and paint over it. Probably best to use a primer since the texture will absorb a lot of paint. Cheaper to let the texture absorb the $10/gallon primer rather than the $50/gallon wall paint.

Looks good, thanks for the video. Perhaps Amazon is a little different in the UK.... When searching for a spaghetti roller the results would be best suited in the kitchen.! A textured effect as you created would suit the less than perfect ceiling we are needing to paint.

haha, well I guess something was lost in translation...yet we are both speaking English! Glad you found it useful. It is a technique that I employed over a large amount of texturing in the house that we just finished remodeling.

What material you have used for this type of walls
@MorganBrown2 ай бұрын
The original wall was sheetrock with drywall mud, plus wallpaper. I removed the wallpaper. I did not need to skim coat the original wall, but I did need to texture it. For my texture technique, I add pre-mixed joint compound to the pan and mix with a small amount of water. Then I roll the joint compound onto the wall. Does this answer your question?

There's an Amazon link in the description. They're $10 or so.

Put on the mud first then use the roller ,Lot faster ,Use 12 -16 inch taping knife to apply even layer of mud makes fast work of applying the mud then use damp spaghetti roller for applying the pattern , Very fast doing it that way.

depends on the texture you are trying to match or achieve. Bob Vila has a nice side by side comparison of some common textures. www.bobvila.com/articles/wall-texture-types/ The method that I describe here will produce something between an orange peel and knockdown texture. The method you are describing (skim coat followed by a dry run with the spaghetti roller) would produce somthing like slap brush or slap brush knockdown.

What do you do if it starts to peel am I going over to meet I'm not putting it on too thick what is happening
@RickyBrewer-t9x Жыл бұрын
I've done a whole house this way but I always have to wait till it dries before I go over it again and then it won't too but I wish I could do it all at once without it feeling
@MorganBrown Жыл бұрын
yeah, this probably not the best method to do a whole house, though I did about 2000 square feet of wall & ceiling in the previous house. My wife doesn't like the method, but I don't mind it. I guess it boils down to how much the texturing will bug you. Personally it doesn't bug me too much, and the people who bought my houses never complain.

Prime your wall first!
@MrBliss-jk5ct7 ай бұрын
ALWAYS PRIME if painting over "shiny" i.e. eggshell, semigloss... If it's in a kitchen, bathroom, or on a door or trim, it's "washable" and needs to be primed before painting over it.
@brendahyatt5032 Жыл бұрын
If I’ve already primed my hallway, would I have to prime it again if I’ve decided to go with the downtown Method? Also, I’ve appplied mud to bathroom, primed, and painted the entire bathroom and the uneven areas are very obvious. What’s the easier way to disguise this now?
@MorganBrown Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's 100% necessary to prime again if you roll mud onto an already-primed surface. Main reason I prime is because mud tends to eat lots of paint. I'd rather burn some super cheap Kilz than $40/gallon wall paint! As to your question of how much you can cover up with texture, it is a tough call. If you have say an uneven line across an entire seam between two sheets, then I would say definitely skim coat another layer. However, if the areas of unevenness are relatively localized (say a few inches long), then texture will cover it up pretty nicely.
@RickyBrewer-t9x Жыл бұрын
And I can roll it not get any lines and it comes out even and I don't have any bare spots but if I go over it too many times it will start to peel
@MorganBrown Жыл бұрын
weird, I've never had the peeling problem before. Curious what kind of mud you are using. I use the pre-mixed US Gypsum joint compound from Home Depot. Never had any problems with peeling texture. Are you texturing on a oily surface like wallpaper or greasy wall paint (kitchen)?
@demef7589 ай бұрын
That's why you MUST prime the wall first. Water won't permeate the mud or paper that way, which is the cause of your peeling. The tradeoff is that it takes longer for the mud to set up when it's on primer, before you can do the knockdown. On the other hand, if you're working on a large area, you want more setup time to allow you to get the mud slopped on. Then sit down for a while to let the mud stiffen up a bit, and then do the knockdown.
