This video reminded me once again about all the amazing times I had refining my skill as a TF2 player and spending my formative years with you guys. Wiggloe, KTM, KittyofCake, Festive, and more are some usernames I remember fondly and I even still have a couple as friends on Steam. SuN was a server I had been referred to by two friends outside of TF2, and we had some of our most fun matches on the SuN servers available. I took a couple-year hiatus from Steam as a whole, and saw at one point that I had been kicked from SuN - likely for inactivity, I presume, as I never had beef with anyone that I can recall - but by the time I realized, the group was inactive. I was surprised to see that SuN has survived in a new form by searching once I watched this video, and I look forward to forming new memories.
@scapegoat42 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, it's been interesting to see people come out of the woodwork and talk about the server. If you have any questions, I was around from 2011-2014 (and beyond, but those are the years I played the most) and know a bit more about the server itself. It was originally started by scissors, rapid_shot and KTM (with tons of others such as wiggloe, killinfreak, ovenmuffins, treetop, castle and so on, but they were the main three): scissors was the "head admin"/ leader type who made a lot of the group posts, rapid was the guy who made the website (as you showed) and KTM worked on the map (with additional input) and plugins. When I joined the map had more recently been changed to sun_trade and it was a blast. I have screenshots of building events when we had a separate server for tfs (I even had moderator perms there), tons of memories... Even more if people start mentioning names heh Another reason the server fell apart was because most of the admin team slowly but surely started holing themselves up in their private TS channel doing whatever (dota, etc), a ton of them got admin perms simply because they were in the clique, as it were (this is what scissors was like, it wasn't that he was never online moreso than he was very secretive). Then there were the actual regulars such as myself, strick, bob, pyroson, bear, taco, ferpy, frank (mr. xylophone) and so on, there are quite a few names I bet I'd be able to remember well after hearing them again, who played on the server itself. That's not to say that the admins were bad people, some of them were great friends of mine back then (to the point where I even bought a nappers respite to match an admin's, p.e to his g.e). It even still has the nametag I put on it all those years ago with it's current owner, hell this video almost made me want to go back and buy it. Regardless of stuff like that however, by the time 2015 rolled around a large percentage of the old admin team was gone with the remaining few only really being active in the background As for the death of the steam group (something you didn't mention here), that was 100% perpetrated by a user called glitchless, a admin/ moderator who had been around as long as I but was more involved with the private chat I mentioned before. On boxing day 2021 he kicked everyone from the steam group except for other admins/ some of his friends, deleted all of the events, comments and other information, changed the image to grimace and changed the name to summit under grimace. Over a decade of server history gone, for absolutely no determinable reason other than he's a piece of shit. That is why it's so hard to find information about it, as most archives aren't very extensive outside of the main page and finding old members that actually remember stuff is hard if you don't have the outreach to bring us out of the woodwork. The steam group has since had it's icon changed back but other than a single KTM comment from 2013 a large chunk of the rest is probably lost forever. I knew I should have taken screenshots of it all back then...

This video really was a huge surprise to see! Hope you don't mind me rambling. SuN was the first community in TF2 that I ever joined. I'd seen my younger brother playing on it, and I decided that it was something I wanted to give a try as well. This was back in like... 2013/2014, so it was long before SunCity. Sun_trade was the map I spent the most time on and it's the one I most heavily associate with the SuN community. I made so many friends there, some of which i'm still in contact with today and talk with somewhat regularly ( I see you, Bionic! ). I'd ended up creating a small splinter community of my own off of the friends i'd made in SuN so that's why I ended up leaving at some point, as I was more focused on having fun with that than anything else ( Rest in Peace weeniehut_v1 ). I played on Colgate's little known TFS server for quite a time, and I was honored to have his help with plugins with my own community for a little bit (We used the spawn baby doll plugin he'd given us for actual years). I was lucky enough to have met Scissors at one point, and I can confirm that he was incredibly kind and an interesting person to chat with. I think I may have also talked with KTM a handful of times, but it's been so long that I can hardly remember. I also remember other folks like Scapegoat, Fancy, Numbers, Pudding, etc etc. I didn't play on SunCity much. When I did, something felt different. There was an odd aura to the place, and it didn't feel like the same community i'd joined back when it was still on SunTrade. I think it was precisely because of the insane community growth that came with the TFS plugin going public, as when I played, it was an admin's only sorta thing. I was very briefly a moderator for the SuN revived project but the person that was running that honestly treated me and some of the other old head players pretty poorly. That's an experience I wouldn't mind talking about sometime, hahaha. I think that combined with some disingenuous intentions are what actually doomed that iteration of SuN. I know you mentioned in the video that it was because they didn't run City, but they very much so did, and were VERY resistant to any form of input on map cycling or that sort've thing. I'm glad that book is closed now. I owe a lot to SuN. I have such incredible and very fond memories of playing there, and it's something I genuinely cherish. SunCity may not have been my SuN experience, but i'm glad it brought people together just like SunTrade did before it. It's what gave me the chance to build my own niche community, and though I don't talk to many of the people from that era of my life anymore, I still think of them with intense fondness. This server was something very special and i'm glad a portion of it gets to live on. :) Thank you for this. P.S. The best room on the old SuN map was definitely the Valentines room. I would live there if I could.

I joined the {SuN} clan back in 2011 shortly after starting to play tf2. I met so many amazing people and I can whole heartedly say I’m a vastly different and better person because of my time there. I was a regular for years, most people probably remember me as ILoveBear or lovebear if you were around on the old maps. Hearing names like KTM, Colgate, Scissors from the video, and scrolling through the comments seeing other old guard mods and admins mentioned is a wave of nostalgia. I loved {SuN} so much, it’s community practically saved me in some of the darkest times of my life. I don’t think any video can really do justice to how special the community was, and there’s so much more to remember before {SuN} was a twinkle in KTMs eye. But I’m glad this server was special enough for others to make a video and memorialize it. However brief a snippet, it makes me happy that people can see what a gem of a community it was.

It's certainly interesting to see that someone with a following made a video about SuN after all these years. When I first joined the TF2 server in 2011(shortly before it was called SuN and a few years before KTM made TFS I'd reckon) it was unlike any sort of gaming experience that you could find--even still to this day. The totally unique events and ARG's (that often included moving a HL2 rollermine with +use or shooting a hidden speech bubble node), the mysterious nature of Scissors and the server while he ran it, the fact that he and so many others gave away authentically valuable items as rewards, the people who would occasionally join to trade thinking it was a simple trade server, and of course the other regulars from this time, some I see in the comments, many of the others I have yet to see mentioned. It feels like there was always some drama back then, but I managed to steer clear of most of it by staying out of the teamspeak and forums. Because of that, however, I still have no clue what really happened to cause that version of SuN to die. I was young at the time and a lot of the details are hazy, but I just wanted to share what my (and I'd think at least a handful of others') experience of the server was like in the era prior to TFS and SunCity.

Heya, Samwiz1. It's really good to see what you've done with the server. I used to be moderator in this place, was named IrRock. I don't like to talk too long about {SuN} since my time there was complicated to say the least. The player base was really toxic, I came on very often to hear regulars calling people slurs and very nasty things and some staff members enabled this behavior since it's online trash talk but it was still extremely disgusting. I was much younger then and was just as nasty as the people who played regularly, heck I got banned twice though I had both bans revoked shortly after and even became a mod for a second time but I do not miss any of it. To end this on a more positive note, the community playing today seems much nicer and not nearly as toxic which is great, once again you've done a great job man. I wish you and your server the best.

It's nice to see an old community that was founded on good vibes and chill times still being kept alive by some folks. Lord knows we TF2 players need a break once in a while from what's become of Casual and the endless hoards of robots in community MvM events

The building that you have no idea what it is looks to be made of girders, so it’s probs a building under construction. Maybe you could have a community event later that is paying for the construction of the building, and then it is finally complete?

The building is not incomplete, as it is not just girders. It has walls and such
