[TF2] The Grand Summer 2023 Tour!

Well, that was certainly an update.
Now that I have a chance to write in retrospect, here's my combined take on the individual features.
The cosmetics are all-around good. I talked a lot of crap on those two demo cosmetics, but their paint regions make up for them and (while half the cosmetics are mediocre) I don't think any of them are bad. As far as cosmetics go, this update's crate was well-done in upper B-tier.
The war paints are great. None of them (except for the Dragon one which is WAY cooler in-game than I made it out to be in the video) are too fancy, but they're all solid skins to have on the roster that don't look like ugly pieces of neon trash.
The VSH maps are all pretty good, and it's a fun gamemode to have on the casual list. At least, it would be if it was on the casual rotation, which (as of 7/19/2023) it still isn't. How Valve managed to screw up copy/pasting something that works fine on community servers is beyond me, but it's still a cooler gamemode than I had previously thought and I do genuinely enjoy playing these maps. If you're interested, all four are on my Stupid Server's map rotation for the time being.
And finally, the normal maps. Love Sulfur and Phoenix, hate Venice and Pelican Peak, and the rest are alright. Decent spread overall; Valve could've done better, but they could've done worse.
But as I mentioned in the ending screen to this video, this is still just a copy/paste. No community bugfixes, bots are EVERYWHERE after dark, and the balance of the game hasn't changed a bit. If @Valve/@teamfortress was listening, I'd formally request something. What I want out of an update isn't a host of slightly different (and technically "new") experiences for the existing TF2; what I want is a shift in the TF2 experience at large. Adding VSH as a gamemode was a good thing in terms of that, but at the end of the day 2Fort and Dustbowl are unchanged because the classes and their weapons are unchanged. I want to learn how to play in new ways, and that requires new weapons. That requires a bit of balancing and maintenance, which is why it's not going to happen, but this is just that 10% of me that isn't completely pessimistic still feeling up to the task of making a request, whether it's heard or not.

I was part of the pessimistic crowd for TF2, but now I'm not, one of the people actually working on TF2 at Valve, Eric, is actually responding to emails, when asked where the community fixes were, he said that they plan on adding them throughout the year VALVE ACTUALLY HAS A PLAN TO WORK ON THE GAME, that is something that hasn't been true since even before jungle inferno, it hasn't been the case that Valve has actually planned anything out with this game since 2014, 2015 saw that plan end, 2016 was Valve releasing meat your match half backed and rushed to respond to overwatch, and 2017 was jungle inferno which was only made out of obligation due to the heavy vs pyro of meat your match, its been almost 10 years since Valve has actually worked on this game in any real capacity, and they are again Edit: also everything points towards Valve actually planning on making this basically a 3rd holiday update, except the content added isn't temporary like smissmiss and scream fortress (the event ending in September refers to the unusual effects, this has been the case for years, technically summer was always considered an event but just only had cosmetics)

This is somehow a better community update than Invasion and End of the Line.

Mostly because this is a Valve-Organized Community Update and not a Valve-Sponsored Community Update. The problems of the old Community Update system had plagued Valved for a very, VERY long time; infighting with the team involved with the project, project disagreements with Valve's community manager, and also Valve being Valve on how they handle third party situations. Every Community Update from Robotic Boogaloo to Invasion were all just pure letdowns due to all the disagreements and overall poor update handling from both parties involved back when Valve actually cared. Hell, Invasion had marked the first time in TF2 history to where two updates overlapped their duration, as Invasion overlapped its length with Scream Fortress. So their current system works phenomenally, albeit even better for a time when TF2 actually had a dev team behind it.

Amazing and heart warmer fact, the hat for Soldier called "Brothers in blues" is a reference to a 1980 musical film called "The blues brothers." Starred Dan aykroyd as "Elwood blues," and John Belushi (who sadly passed away from overdose in 1982) as "Jake Blues." The hat could be in honor for both brothers but it looks like It takes more reference towards Jake but I could be wrong. Either way I'm So happy they added that hat man.

This update really was an immensely infulential update. Not only did it contribute to a new all-time peak in player count for TF2, but it also added a new player destruction map with the main selling point of that map being its immensely popular seal that you are tasked with feeding.

Honestly, we need a balance patch. There are multiple servers with a balance mod plugin, it has been over 5 years since Blue Moon's balance changes, and a lot of weapons still need balancing. Aside from that and community fixes, I really love the map selection for the most part. I do think Extinction and Shoreleave should've been in over Venice and Cashworks (which was uploaded to Gamebanana back in April *2009*), as those maps have a much more interesting color palette and play better, but the rest of the selection is top notch. Also, the cosmetics and war paints are *exquisite* this time around. You should try and get a Secretly Serviced onto a Brass Beast it is honestly amazing.

Finding a server depends on where you live, NA West Coast like Washington and LA are really fast while NA East like NYC and Virginia are different I'd believe. AU servers are also often more casual than NA casual ever is.

I will say, at the very least two things this update accomplished that does make me smile. One it introduced more players to Player Destruction, which you don't really see in casual all too often. So we might see an upswing in people making maps for that mode. And two, it got more people to check the VScript Saxton Hale Mod, which for a commuinty gamemode that has been around for while now, for not only probably the best version of that mode to date to be added (at least until it's fixed) and to get more attention from content creators and casual palyers, that is awesome. Props to the mod team who worked on that mode, they really do deserve all this attention. I overall thought this update was good. And while I can get tired of some of the pessimisn, I understand it. Honestly, at this point I'm not even asking for a major content update, just one that brings about a bunch of fixes and QOL improvements, helps furter remove bots and cheaters from the game, maybe some balance changes (and that's a big maybe), and maybe something to help the community further keep the game alive, maybe like official mod support or something. Overall understand your viewpoint, hope they fix and readd VSH because if they don't then that is supremly stupid and shitty on Valves part, and overall this was a good update. At this point this is probably par the course for TF2 until Valve either does something new or just says fuck and fully lets the community have it with mod support or something. I'm just happy we can now play the game normally without ear-rape sniper bots every other round/game. Also, fun fact: If Cashworks felt a bit like an older map or like it feels like a map that could've been made for TF2 back in like 2008 or 09, then that's not far off. As it' actualy an older community made map that dates back to April of 2009. I can see it's flaws, but it's honestly a fun map that I think really shows how well good design can carry a map, even despite it's age. I actually remember playing a game where people remarked that it felt like an Old-New Map. A map that was new, but feels like it's been in game forever. When in reality, that's somewhat true. Regarding why BLU always attacks and RED always defends: Long time ago someone made a study that shows a majority of matches in I think it was League of Legends were won by whoever was playing Blue. Something to do with color theory: Blue is Passive and tactical, while Red is Aggressive and hostile. If that holds true, RED and BLU in TF2 might be a play off of that.

Fun fact about VSH: any on kill effects become on hit effects when used on hale. If a demoknight is using the eyelander, and hits hale enough, a new voiceline occurs.

I am going to share this RQ, and I doubt this will be seen. Sulphur was a map made by someone named Freyja in the TF2 Community, and was a map also shown off in a video by Big Joey. Freyja is one of the co-creators of the popular weeb haven that is KOTH_Suijin, which is why they have such focus on Japanese aesthetics. Point D has a timer on it, specifically to note towards how it changes with time. With depending on how many points are capped, the final platform on Point D will rise and fall, to create interesting end of map experiences depending on how the final point battle was led up to.

I'd say that this update was pretty good. And even though I started playing this game somewhere around early 2020 and I can't have an opinion on every update that came out for this game, I still think for what they did, it's pretty neat for my first experience with a "major" update for this game. And I say "major" because, as Valve previously stated, this is a holiday sized update, despite the fact that they're considering this as a major update for the game. Although the Seal was the highlight for the vast majority of the community, I think VS Saxton Hale becoming an official gamemode was the highlight for me personally because I barely had experience with the community version of the gamemode before this update. Even though I haven't played all of the maps at the moment of typing this, they can be pretty hit or miss for me at times. But after seeing what the rest of the maps look like, I'm interested to see how they play out. Cosmetics, War Paints, and Taunts are pretty neat too. Overall, I'd say that despite the flaws that this update has, it is good. Not amazing or bad, it's good for a majo- I mean, holiday-sized update.
