Brilliant - I had an evening with a friend when this VHS came out and we watched all of it - special times. I still have the VHS, and the DVD. These treasures of British social history need to be preserved and cherished.

I never seen these ads... I'm not British either (I'm from Mexico). But speaking of disturbing and nightmare ads... there is not more disturbing ad as the last one (that about leaking pipes) .... even the Protect and Survive ads (that I actually watch to relax or sleep tight) are not as disturbing as this final ad... specially at 2:08:53, when the whole family pretend to be frozen but the tiniest girl can't hold it to turn her face around.... it's chilling and creepy. @nopcshere60974 жыл бұрын
That's the famous 'Protect and Survive' PSAs produced in the 1970s. They were slated to be broadcast if & when it was believed nuclear war was imminent, which thankfully never happened. They were seen being broadcast on British television in the 1984 TV movie 'Threads'.

@@nopcshere6097 Ah yes, a fellow recent Threads watcher. Very good film, tragic future.
@cleverhardy52302 жыл бұрын
@@nopcshere6097 Indeed, cynics and those who wanted to protest against nuclear war called rubbish with some aspects of Protect and Survive. Especially with Inner Cores and Refuges, and plastic bags. Before Threads, parts of the series were shown on 80's documentaries of what Britain could have done should nuclear war be possible.

These are still very informative, I think children and maby adults are not aware of some of these common sense things. It's weird seeing Jimmy Saville and Alvin Stardust on safety videos and other videos showing children how to avoid these types, if it was even possible for them to avoid when care workers and parents were part of the ring.

Anyone else notice that after the Protect and Survive ads the animated PIFs were discontinued? I wonder why that was. Did they just fall out of fashion or something? Edit: Okay turns out I’m just a dummy lol
@locutus155 Жыл бұрын
They were never actually released to the public. They were meant to be shown if international tensions got the point that nuclear war was pretty much given. They were designed to act as a placebo and give the populace something to do that looked like it would do some good.
@DankEngine2005 Жыл бұрын
@@locutus155 I don’t necessarily mean them though. I mean why did animated psas fall out of fashion?

@@DankEngine2005 for this video they weren't discontinued, but this DVD was originally released as 2 separate VHS cassettes. Part one was the animated PIFs and the second was the live action PIFs was on part two. Protect and Survive was intended to keep the population where they were by kidding them that a mattress and a few doors could protect them from thermo nuclear destruction, it was intended to keep people in one place and stop mass movement out of the cities etc. Most people were wise to this and realised if the bomb drops you’ve had it.
