Combat units will use the Benellis most likely. I can see the 590A1 floating around 20 years from now. In the Navy in the early 1980's they were using up 1944-1945, and early 1950's .45 ammunition. Waste not, want not. Drove the guys who fixed/maintained guns nuts. Some of that WWII era .45 still had the mildly corrosive primers. Clean, clean so no rust. In fact I had a .45 ball round driven out of a barrel that was a squib. Those 230 grain FMJ's are so heavy feeling and the jackets were so thick back then. Sadly I lost it in a move years ago. Great paperweight and conversation piece. Oh the barrel twist was clearly visible in the jacket too.

Thank goodness they changed that mag tube extension on the 940 tac. I had non stop jam ups with the stock plastic tube because of flex causing the spring and follower to hang. Made for a totally unreliable shotgun. Had to spend $150 bucks for a metal extension. Now it's reliable.

I want that shortened LOP stock (on the 590A1 Pro) for my 590A1 SBS. The speedfeed stock that ships with the SBS ejects shotshells during firing and it is too long. The Hogue LOP butt stock for the 590x is hollow--which is not satisfactory. I wanted to install Mossberg's flex bantam stock on my SBS, but I have not been able to find a Mossberg flex conversion kit for years.

I've owned 3 Mossberg shotguns they've all been solid. Had to replace the magazine spring on my 590 but it fixed the no feed issue it was having of course I bought it in like 1994😅. I always wanted an A1 and probably will soon as I have gotten a new 940 JM Pro( still unfired) but it has a 24" barrel so is more for hunting than home defense. I had a 500 combination with a short barrel and also a 27" ribbed hunting barrel. I've given my sons the two pump guns after getting the semi auto. I want to get a tactical shorter version. Considering the 590A1, the Benelli M2/Stoeger M3000 or the new Beretta A300 Ultima. I would still get another Mossberg like a 930-940.

I got a short LOP stock for my 590 from Hogue (iirc) and it's such a good investment. I used a Mesa setup before and the Mossberg just feels better in a traditional format especially with that tang safety. The thing that concerns me the most about buying a semi auto is being able to have a reasonable LOP.

​​@@jlopez1017d Yes and No, depends on user preference. SGA stocks can be adjusted for length of pull and have a slightly different grip angle, similar to an Armalite Rifle grip. However, it still allows the thumb to reach the tang safety on top of the receiver, without moving the firing hand.

I like the changes in LOP and sights . My Mossberg 500 tactical ( 20" barrell with ghostring sights ) required improvements in stock ( got Magpul SGA ) and Williams fiberoptic front sight . Glad to see a manufacturer making serious tactical offerings .

My Mossberg 590 Retro 12 ga is a fantastic home defense shotgun and I have even taken it out for sporting clays. It cycles fast enough to get both clays. 6 in the tube is handy, too. Put a Limbsaver on the butt to greatly reduce the recoil. The wood furniture is beautiful.

I’m a mossberg man through and through when it comes to home defense shotguns… I’ve owned several mossbergs over the years, currently I have 2 shockwaves that I absolutely LOVE… I also own a Remington tactical 12 gauge and it stays in my safe because I hate where the pump release button is… drives me crazy… These shotguns both look badass but it will be hard to get me away from my shockwaves lol… I’ve added a light and laser to the one I use for self defense which has taken me from accurate enough to surgical… And by switching to mini shells which took my mag capacity from 5 + 1 to 10 + 1… And it fits in a backpack… As cool as those shotguns are I just don’t see the home defense advantage…

I was waiting on these last year when I was looking to get a semiauto shotgun. I finally decided, F it, and got a 1301 back in November. Expensive? Sure, but I'm happy with it. But it does seem this 940 has some significant improvements compared to what was shown last year, so I'm glad Mossberg did delay it and make it better it seems. It's about time someone manufactured a semiauto tactical shotgun with QD cups that enable good sling setup out of the box. And before someone mentions the Beretta A300 Patrol, that has the QD cup on the bottom of the stock which isn't a good location IMO. Hell, even my expensive 1301 out of the box only had a QD cup on the barrel clamp but has a stud on the bottom of the stock. Honestly, does anyone use that setup? Which is why I went with the GG&G Magpul furniture kit and added QD to the stock. Aridus has the same options too. Mossberg, if nothing else, got that part right from the factory. I guess all that remains to be seen is if it functions reliably. I know their pump guns are solid (I love my 590A1) but I hear somewhat mixed reviews of the 940. Mostly good but generally not universally positive.

What's interesting is that agencies are dropping shotguns in favor of patrol rifles due to IBOs, so the LE shotgun market is shrinking. Most LE shotguns in agency hands in the US are relegated to less lethal use only. A few places still use shotguns as their primary long guns, but it is rare these days.

Totally agree. As a retired state LEO and firearms instructor the pump shotgun used to be the gold standard for a long gun. It still has its place in that the racking of my shotgun was enough to gain compliance of most people in an armed confrontation. With the increase of active shooter situations with masses of potential citizen targets mixed in and around the shooter...precision is necessary than throwing a spread of buckshot.

A 1301 gen 2 is 1700-1800ish once the import ban is lifted on them. When they first released they were 1600ish. But I'd argue to get an A300 Patrol over this Mossberg.

The 590A1 and 835 smooth bore barrels are thick walled and solid performers. This new Professional LE barrel does not look thick walled. A ghost ring sight should be adjustable for slug use, but Mossberg was never known for it’s ghost ring sights. A serious duty shotgun should give up to three inch slug groups at twenty five yards and up to fourteen inch buckshot patterns at twenty five yards.

I find the comment about having faith in their barrels funny. I just sent a 940 SPX Pro back with a front sight that was over 10 degrees canted to the right. And even with all those folks looking at the gun at all those stations, it still got out of the factory to me like that.

The M590A1 I got last year had a loose front sight, and the factory chokes weren’t concentric to the bore. It also dropped live shells when racking the pump. Their quality control is terrible.
