The stadiums without the atheletic tracks are build (or retrofited) for the AFC Asian Cup, there's a batch of them; but China gave up the hosting rights to Qatar. But the best football stadium design in China rightnow goes to the one being build in Xi'an rightnow.

China gave up because of the shitty COVID-19 policy, even in Chinese mainland, the broadcasters of World Cup didn't capture a frame for the fans in the stadium because the government didn't want the people to see the world got rid of the strict limitation of COVID-19 except themselves.

Well I didn't know Shanghai Stadium has become the football specific by building more seats over the running track. But the space between the side lines and the first row of seat is wider than the regular football specific stadiums. Kind of remind me of Maracana before renovation. It sort of gave the Shanghai Stadium some Brazilian flavor.

現実的にはまだまだ厳しい状況ですね。MLSのように地に足をつけたスタジアムを建てて改修していくという考え方はなかったのでしょう。 とにかく巨大スタジアムでワールドカップ誘致という考えが最優先されたように思いますね。 通常のリーグ戦でスタジアムが群衆で埋まることはなかなか難しいでしょう。

when you see the ugly athletic track you know the people in charge no nothing about Football or Sports in general, it doesn't matter what the exterior look like it's all about what's inside, the atmosphere you can have a better experience at a small ground of 10 to 15k if it's done right, and in most countries around the world they do it right (rich or poor)

Many of them are built as multi-purpose Olympic stadiums, some of them are rebuilt/being rebuilt as football stadium (for example Shanghai stadium and Beijing Workers' stadium), some team moved/moving to newly built football stadium, but apparently not every team can afford the cost.
