Las Vegas, in addition to being a tourist destination both for Americans and some international travelers, also plays host to a quite a few business conferences and trade shows each year. Oh, and it’s a “Hub” for Southwest Airlines, even though Southwest isn’t fully on the hub and spoke model like American, Delta, and United. So quite a few Southwest Passengers, especially those transiting between the West Coast and more Eastern parts of the country will change planes there.

The reason the takeoff was so much louder is most likely because the power setting is at TO/GA, on most A350 flights they're at FLEX takeoff config which is not full power and makes a huge difference in engine noise.

@Patagonicus424 ай бұрын
In case someone else doesn't know what these words mean: TO/GA is Take Off / Go Around, which is the maximum thrust the engines can produce, but it can only be used for a limited time. FLEX is the more fuel efficient lower thrust setting. For larger airports FLEX is usually good enough to take off, but on this flight they went with TO/GA. At least that's what I could find with a bit of googling.

FWIW regarding your 15 hours flight, almost all of the TYO-LHR flights are going east-bound at the moment due to the Russian airspace issues, taking the polar route over Alaska and Greenland, while LHR-TYO take the Caspian route. Both are 15+ hours as a result, and great for that proper F experience! When the long runway at HND was closed for a week at the beginning of the year, the JAL TYO-LHR had to stop in Nagoya or Narita to take on enough fuel for the trip: it couldn't take off on the shorter runways fully loaded.

I’ve accidentally become a loyal Asiana customer since 2022 as they were always either the most affordable or convenient option for my surprisingly frequent East Asia trips recently. They are a super solid and reliable option. Their catering out of Seoul might just be the best economy catering I’ve ever had. Their catering partner (which I believe is LSG) managed to pull off pesto pasta and juicy creamy chicken on a plane. For an economy meal... I thought I’d win the lottery first. It’s therefore a shame they might disappear soon, but I’ve heard good things about Korean Air, so all hope isn’t lost. But Asiana defiantly must step up their entertainment offering as long as they’re still operating, because it’s sparse af. Final note, I think the different spool up sound at takeoff might have to do with the engine being able to perform better with the higher density and moist air when it rains, or just the general acoustics in such weather. A350 takeoff in the rain is music to my ears 😊

Sometimes, flying can be simply glorious. Really enjoyed the views. The one question I have relates to airline alliances. Back in '04, when I went from 250K miles/year to zero, Asiana was in OneWorld and Korean Air was in Star Alliance. Now, Asiana is in Star Alliance and Korean Air is in Sky Team. After the merger, I assume that Asiana will be brought into Sky Team. Changing alliances can be really expensive and technically challenging. If you have any insight into the alliance musical chairs played by the two main Korean airlines, I'd appreciate the enlightenment. Thanks in advance.

I still prefer T1 at ICN. The food is horrible in the Asiana lounge since covid. I mostly fly Etihad but it's shared. Stale sandwiches, cheap cup noodles and days old pasta. 15 hours is now crazy. I transfer through Abu Dhabi with a 3 hour connection and it still takes 18 hours.
