Greetings! Just gonna write this here as I know it'll get brought up. Regarding the power draw, I'm well aware that i.e. GPUs like the 3080Ti have configurable TDPs set by the manufacturer, and it can range up to 175W for that, and supplying 120W is within spec. I intentionally didn't spend 2 minutes talking about this because it's not relevant and I hopefully got the point got across either way, but in a Precision 17" flagship workstation, those TDPs shouldn't be set to the lower end as people are paying that kind of money for performance. Obviously power = heat and noise which is an argument for doing this to keep it low, but if you want low power weaker system go buy a XPS or a Latitude, this is supposed to be the super insane work horse. Dell should have redesigned the entire chassis and called upon their years of experience to mitigate the high power draw with some new cooling layout, but instead they diluted and dialled it back to levels which are not OK on a Precision (imo). And all of this would have added 2 mins to the video so it wasn't worth putting in, so it goes here!

Dell Precision 5540, here. I disabled Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 in order to tame excess heat and nearly 5,000 RPM fan noise. All I lost was some de facto over-clocking. This overheating is common to many Intel-based notebooks with thin bodies.

I was one of the 5 people that attended your class at Autodesk University 2022 in New Orleans this year. You stood up on that stage with a Dell Precision 7770 and marveled at how amazing this laptop was. Doing rendering and VR at the same time without missing a beat. A Dell rep was there, a Intel rep was there and the 7770 was the best thing since sliced bread. I trusted you and Dell when my supervisor asked for recomendations last week and based off of what I was told at AU2022 I recommended the 7770. After the order is placed for THREE of them I come across this video. Extreme disappointment and frustration are pretty good words to use, maybe a little p!$$ed off too. About 2.5 years ago work bought me a 7740 for CAD use. After about a year’s use the visits form tech support started. The replaced the motherboard 8 times as well as every other component in the machine. Finally, they agreed to provide a replacement machine. A 7760 was delivered and after 6 months of having it, it started to self shut-down due to thermal overload. After a further 4 visits from tech support replacing even more motherboards, they agreed to provide yet another replacement machine. The 7770 turned up just before new year. Thanks for this excellent and very eye opening review! It's too late for me, unfortunately. I bought one already 😭 … Two things I came across on my machine I think are worth mentioning: 1⃣ The keyboard is too small. I'm a software architect rather then a 3D CAD/animation modeller. So, the keyboard is my main input device. The 7770 CTO comes with a shrinked navigation key area on the keyboard (i.e. BACKSPACE, RETURN, ARROWS, HOME, END etc.). So, it's utterly hard to edit text using this keyboard. My former notebook was the DELL Precision M6700. It had a full keyboard. The new keyboard layout is completely unreasonable, as there is plenty of empty room left lateral the keyboard panel. 2⃣ The Precision 7770 CTO gets incredibly hot! I just updated the BIOS to v1.8. During the update I could hardly touch any keys on the keyboard without them being literally roasted. - This device just isn't made for professionals to work professionally with it 👿

Hmm, I put on hold on this model just because Ada Lovelace is coming next and TB4 is just not good enough; and 7770 still does not have the 240W charging thru USB function; and the charger is not GAN; and.... so i still keep my 7720.

This is happening to a greater or lesser extent with 2022 laptops across the spectrum i.e. from 13" thin and light Ultrabooks like the XPS 13 Plus through to beefy mobile workstations that we have here. My pet conspiracy theory? Intel blagged the OEMs into thinking that Tiger Lake big:Little was going to be a lot more efficient than it really is in practice. Yes, big power gains over 11th gen parts but disproportionately higher power draw to achieve that & crazy thermals even at idle/low power loads. Gaming rigs tend to have the thermal headroom to absorb this. Anything thin and light doesn't. It's just physics.🤷🏽♂

Given my recent experience with Dell, this story doesn't come as much of a surprise. I'm a retired MS Professional and for ~25 years recommended Dell to my clients. A year ago I ordered an XPS to replace my aging HTPC. Alarmingly, running the installer on the HD resulted in a machine connected to a stranger's MS account. Dell support agreed that the machine was infected with a virus, but insisted that I'd somehow managed to accomplish this myself. Quite how I managed this prior to running the Dell-supplied installer was beyond the Dell support person's ability to comprehend. Needless to say that despite a quarter century of excellent service, it was time to seek a new supplier! One of my hobbies is digital "painting" and rather than my new high end workstation coming from Dell, I ended up having a box based on AMD's new Threadrippers built by new to Australia company Dream PC. They provided me with the kind of service Dell _used_ to provide, but at considerably lower cost. The ~$AU15,000 I spent (plus professional display and digitiser) is nothing to be sneezed at, but a long way short of what I would have expected to give Dell for a Xeon-based workstation. My second choice, LeNovo's website allowed me to _specify_ what I wanted, but no way to actually make the purchase. Emailing LeNovo's support merely resulted in my being placed on a list for company advertising! The industry has certainly changed a lot since my first 8088-based PC!

I had a 7670 w/12950HX and it also suffered terrible performance. Max CBR23 was around 13,000. Just out of interest, does the BIOS support undervoltage tweaking? 1.6V +/- 0.02V is costing them massively in power and thermals on an already power limited machine... Can it be manually undervolted by the user to get closer to the true spec MHz of the cpu? Also does MSI Afterburner allow you to undervolt a mobile GPU? I have built, upgraded and repaired many many desktop PC's over the years on the side, but generally have refused to work on laptops as there can be massive underlying issues dependent on how they've been physically treated, as a result I'm not particularly familiar with laptop BIOSs. Recently I've built a couple of 12000k itx desktops and undervolted them during stability testing with amazing results: in my builds 12700k was pulling about 195W-200W in Cinebench r23, at about 69C-75C (on a dual radiator ITX build with the GFX card in the same waterloop but not loaded). Stable undervolt at stock settings otherwise brought that down to an amazing 140W-145W, resulting in 59C. Thats with the core voltage down to 1.166V ... If you can take the Precision 7770 down even a little bit manually, it should reduce thermal load so increase clock considerably, no? And again in my itx builds, I undervolt 3080 to 875mV, which also allows me to OC them slightly would you believe and still lose 50W... So if you can undervolt a mobile GPU, you could also see an increase in clock speed/performance within the limited power of the Precision 7770. Now don't get me wrong, the end user shouldn't have to do this, but I'm interested to know if it can be done and makes a significant difference? Thanks
@Neil3D2 жыл бұрын
All good points but negative, there's no voltage control on the mobile workstations. I even tried using Throttlestop but that was completely locked out. They've always been super strict walled gardens have the pro models, even basic overclocking is locked out on a CPU model which has that feature.
@danrepaci60152 жыл бұрын
There’s a guide to enable undervolting and remove CFG lock on Dell workstations. Did it on 7750 Results were stable -100mv Used grub64.efi Setup_var CpuSetup 0x1D 0x1 Setup_var CpuSetup 0x1A 0x1 (Don’t quote me exactly I’m writing this from memory) That removed overclocking lock and CFG lock and throttle stop worked and so did Msi afterburner on a quadro rtx5000 One change in bios (disable HT) that I changed back on menu made those only turn off turbo and never worked again. Regardless the embedded controller would throttle the CPU to 80w within a 90sec timeframe using cpu graphics and if the quadro was on in any way PL2 would be over in 30sec when it was only at 80degrees. This was also after liquid metal and RTV seal

With the latest 12th Gen processors from Intel I have gone full circle and gone back to a desktop as my primary machine. My secondary is a portable 15" 2in1 with a dedicated graphics and 16gb ram. My next phase for compute power is to virtualise my desktop with vgpu pass through so I can use it from, well virtually anywhere. I think the days of 17" CAD workstation monsters are numbered. Just out of curiosity, with number PCIe lanes available on the 12th Gen for desktop motherboards we consider these to be consumer grade architecture. HEDT and Workstation architecture is next level for dedicated resource allocation. Does DELL, MSI or HP typically provide documentation for motherboard layouts/block diagrams, PCIe lane allocation or Chipset controller management? I noticed you mentioned the 7770 had 4 DIMM slots. Is that quad channel or dual channel memory. Based on ddr5 memory performance the Z670 motherboards using 2 stick rather than 4 stick would be a wise configuration.
@Neil3D2 жыл бұрын
I dunno like, like I said in the other reply, these can be as powerful as the best desktops if done right... unless of course you're doing something that can genuinely use dozens of cores on a server grade CPU or a threadripper. The Titan was as good as my desktop 12900K and used less power, and is portable, so I switched and dismantled the DIY build. But of course it isn't a black and white thing, some people have massively different use cases and requirements. Re diagrams, I'm not sure to what level of detail you'd need but some info is out there. Re the slots, I said in this video that it had 4x m.2 SSD slots not RAM slots. The 7770 at the moment is shipping with the new CAMM layout which isn't a traditional slot array, but I think you can spec in SODIMM modules on the configurator for dual channel... the Core platform doesn't support quad channel so it would be dual.
@FliesEyes2 жыл бұрын
@@Neil3D sorry, the video mentioned 128gb of ddr5, so I assumed the motherboard had 4 x DIMMS slots. The Dual vs Quad channel memory limitations has been a question I have been researching for the new Intel generation of processors to understand the science behind this tech in an attempt to understand performance variation when combining the IPC and Freq specs together. Some have suggested that AMD and Xeons, even with lower freq but higher IPC can outperform 12th Gen. It would appear this calculation would be purely theoretically so testing some different systems might be the only way to validate performance. I haven't found any data to confirm this suggestion. Still not sure if the limation is due to the CPU memory controller architecture or PCB architecture, I think the CPU memory controller is the determining factor here not the PCB layers.

I have worked in IT for years now and my company including others, Dell has them duped. My current Precision 5560, i7 11850H throttles like a mofo! We use the Dell recommended dock, checked HWinfo64, let plenty of air get to the back panel, only around 1.375V max but still throttles! For the amount we spend on these mobile workstations they have to improve these models!

It's the same chassis as the XPS. What did they expect for such a thin and light laptop?

Dell typically set low thermal limits for the GPU and CPU, say in the low 70*c and low 80*c ranges, respectively. The throttling schemes varied in the XPS and Precision laptop and might be stepped. Historically, the main issue probably was thermal limits to the case/fans/heat sinks; the 240 watt power supply is insufficient today but with the thermal constraints, a bigger power supply might not matter. Thin & light!
@Neil3D2 жыл бұрын
It kinda doesn't matter which or whatever spin/reason is put to it, it's a complete failure from all angles. Let's say they did put a 70-80C thermal limit on this unit, it's just not feasible to expect a desktop sku to operate at those levels inside a laptop without severely underperforming. I've since seen some benchmarks from the Lenovo P16 with the same HX part and it's not much better by the looks of it. The Tier 1's really need to rethink what they're doing moving forwards.
@dosgos2 жыл бұрын
@@Neil3D Agreed. This is a long-running marketing scheme in the premium "light & thin" laptop space. These laptops include "top-tier" components but size constraints require thermal & power limits. Dell has been doing this with the XPS & Precision for over a decade, but other laptop makers do the same. A thick case and big power brick can solve the problem. Really, these premium thin laptops should have lower-end components to fit the thermal & power limits of the case. But then the makers couldn't charge premiums for those nice Intel & nVidia chipsets. I will say, Dell has significantly improved the thermal & power design of the XPS & Precision over the years. Excellent cases, carbon fibre, screens and touchpads. Several years ago, modders could boost XPS & Precision performance a lot. These days it is not so easy as Dell has improved the laptop cooling/power delivery. And Intel is pushing the CPUs very hard so there is not much to undervolt.

Temps are definitely contentious. I would certainly not want anything higher than 85 degrees when running a 24/7 load. GPU failures are a very real issue.
@dosgos Жыл бұрын
@@vivek_v Can't fight the physics. Higher temperatures degrade electronics at exponential rates. For sure, laptop GPUs, CPUs, and cooling schemes have improved quite a bit.

Oh man, Get away from me with those dell „precision“ notebooks. I have one precision 5550 and it is the worst notebook I ever had. Instant thermal throttling, because they wanted to make this device ultra thin. The fan are pitching constant on frequencies, which make my dog cry. I had to disable turbo boost, to keep noise and temperatures to a manageable level. That thin design did not left any space for a lot of ports. 3 usb-c, one sd-card slot an a headphone jack. One of the usb-c ports is always occupied for charging, because the also small battery last only 30 minutes when using CAD. The keyboard and trackpad are also horrible. The key are sluggish. And the whole keyboard bounces while typing. But that cheap plastic trackpad is really an insult to the customers (shaking cursor, not detecting gestures correctly and randomly throwing the cursor around opened documents while typing). I could go on with the list of disappointments, but to conclude: To me it seams, that dell tried hard to make a copy of a MacBook but failed miserably.

The "expected behaviour" was in response to the overall collective of my feedback, they didn't really go any further into it after that so I have to assume that was the response to the thermal throttling as well, but it indeed does this on every one I've seen so far!

Have just sent Dell a message with these findings and asked if this is also the case for my specific case (unfortunately looks like it with 180W charger). Let me wait for their response and solution....

That was exactly the one I had… and returned. It’s handy as a lap and hand warmer, but you can get a lot more compute power for a lot less money. Also, I use my laptop primarily for music production and it had the worst real-time performance of any computer I’ve ever used. That must be because of all the throttling - the more a computer adapts voltage and frequency to maintain temp/power the worse the real-time performance. And that laptop has reached a new low in that regard.
