O.M.G. As you said at the intro of the video-gamechanger. This is exactly what I needed to stop spending HOURS trying to do something that seemingly (should be) simple! Boats of love for your videos. I SUBSCRIBED!

This is brilliant! You just explained every use of 3D freeform modeling that I didn't understand for years. This opens up a big world for me.

You're a hero, every time I hit a road block in one of my projects I look to your videos and quickly find enough info to blow past it. Cheers, bud!

This video is perfect. Recently been getting back into design for 3d printing and have been wanting to dabble in some more organic and complex shapes. Lofting and sweeping are fine but take way too long to get some real complex shapes and textures going.

Great tutorial, love the presenting style! You said that if we're hoping you're going to show us how to design that thing we want it's not going to happen? Well I'm a furniture designer and you just showed me EXACTLY what I wanted to know! Cheers dude!

Great vid. Here's a question.... I've tried before and could not figure it out so it may not be possible... Can you sketch something first and then constrain the edges on the centerline of a freeform to the sketch entities?
@Neil3D9 жыл бұрын
+Jess Neal Erm... haha yes but it involves a bit of fiddling, sounds like decent content for a new video though! What situation are you doing this in? Anything specific?
@jesscneal9 жыл бұрын
+TFI CAD Tips Yes... Specifically I wanted to try and find an easier way to model pistol grips. Using the traditional methods is very time consuming and I had to get sloppy on some operations. I could send you an example ipt if you want.

Hi thank for posting this video. I have a question. Im a noob and have been trying to learn free form for a few weeks now. Im in the middle of making a model using several individual free formed parts. My problem is that when I try to make a new part after I set my symmetry and click okay the symmetry disappears. I have no idea what I've done wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm in the midst of designing a curved handle for a charging station and I'm stuck in how to taper to a dimension. Picture a tube ~25.41mm diameter and ~101.61 in length but I would like the last 25.41 mm to taper to a 15 mm hole that slopes down. In where I'd normally use the loft feature, can I use free form to apply this feature? Would it be best to rough outline in sketch then use free for only the aesthetic values? I know this might be beyond the scope of the basics behind this video but tying free form with constrained sketches, is key for me. Thanks a bunch, been subscribed to you for a little while and I have learned a lot from your videos.

awesome video, very to the point and smooth. Follow up question if you have time to answer. can you selectivly thicken only part of a part? I.e thicken a face or multiple selected faces?

is there a way to constrict free form to a modeled frame? for example, you model a wooden sofa construction frame and you make free form and constrict it to the wood frame? that way if we change the measurements of the wood frame will free form follow?
@2sahn2342 жыл бұрын
Free form doesn't store any dimensions that's its free form, but you can merge the solids later on

Do you happen to know if there are any advantages to doing industrial modelling in applications like Rhinoceros or Alias compared to Inventor? I'm under the impression that if one can model in Inventor then they won't need the other applications right?

NealTHX for the freeform videoWould it be possible to make a sketch on paper scan this in introduce tat skech in Inventor and using it as a Template to do the freeform drawing ?for example you skech a car body and make the 3D freeform off those bodu parts using your hand drawing?And when that drawing is done how do i proceed to convert this drawing in to an actual part.Take careFrancis

Does anyone know why that freeform panel (and others) are completely missing on my 2018 inventor?
@Neil3D7 жыл бұрын
Check the panel hadn't been turned off? Right click on the ribbon bar and check the menu. Go into the addins too and check they aren't blocked or disabled
@kingbillybob7 жыл бұрын
Addressing the why would you model cloth. Say I create a curved upholstery frame, and it works. I have maybe used some basic surfacing and trim operations to acquire the OA shape, and I arrive at having a wooden frame. Now I want to take the freeform plane, have it snap to the shape of the frame (sort of like the Autodesk promotional video of a race car seat), and pull it to where it appears as the final product. When I viewed that video, I believe to be from 2005, I could see where I wanted to go. I have hundreds of frames to snap to, or conform to, just no technique. You can also get to a place where you have surfaced, and need to snap to that geometry. At the same time, I could understand how someone that had that technique might be a little hesitant to share, nothing new in the CAD employment world. If I get there, I probably will share, since I am getting up there in age, and might retire at some point soon. For the KZbin video I mentioned, go to kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKuwg357eMqnnJo.

although ima hella use this to my advantage in 3d printin
@Neil3D7 жыл бұрын
No it's not an imitation of mudbox or maya, it's a different back end and obviously nowhere near as good. These are t-splines whereas I think maya is nurbs based. But aye it'll be sweet for doing stuff for 3D printing
@charliebaker14277 жыл бұрын
TFI well maya can use nurbs and polygon shapes ,and in terms of how its trying to manipulate edges and faces,it is imitating maya,honestly though i just wish they would add in the alt + mouse button view controls like they have in most of their softwares

@billross09606 жыл бұрын
Charlie Baker - As Autodesk own and produce mudbox, as “3D digital painting and sculpting software”, its hardly a poor attempt, or imitation of anything. Horses for courses.
