Which one should you buy in 2019? Oculus have recently discontinued the original Oculus Rift and replaced it with the new Rift S, but HTC are still selling their original HTC Vive and they're roughly in the same price category, so which one is the better option?

I got the Rift S. Rift S controllers are both touch-sensitive and pressure sensitive. However, Steam has not updated its Steam VR yet to recognize the new controllers, so it still recognizes it as the old Touch controllers. This is fine for most games, but it can indeed cause some strange 'sensitive' touch accidents when a game does not support it. Within Oculus software and games they feel extremely nice. Audio is 'fine'. Sure it misses the bass and deep tones, but its good enough for most games. Its also a extremely good in making you hear 360 degrees around you. The 10 hz downgrade is unnoticable for most people, unless you are a real purist. The LCD screen is higher resolution and integrates a very good frame smoothing model whilst being faster in response times which ALSO reduces nausea for lots of people. (Why do people never mention this?) OLED Panels are slow and can therefor cause nausea quicker for many people. Certainly not everyone, but the Rift S LCD might be more comfortable for most. HOWEVER, my biggest complaint with the Rift S is the lack of Manual IPD adjustment. Its 'software based' and that is absolutely bad, absolutely horrid sadly. My eyes are the absolute maximum (70 or 72mm, measured it myself) size that it supports and I can still see through the headset clearly, but every 'bump' that makes the headset shift up-down-left-right only miniscule is already noticable by me. Whilst the GF who has an IPD more in the range of 62-64 (more average), does not notice these issues as fast. Solutions to some problems: Black screens: Turn off Steam VR AND Oculus software. Start up the Oculus software first, put on the headset, start the Steam VR again. Steam VR and Oculus Software 'miscommunications': DO NOT Start Steam VR before Oculus is fully started and you put on the headset. You do not need to do any setup for Steam VR after Oculus has been started and the room is configured. (which takes less than a minute if it 'forgets') Play in dark room: You can play in a dark room, just make sure to put on atleast one light source. The headset will warn you if its too dark, but I only got that once and it was really dark in the room when that happened. Make sure to wipe off the sensors with a soft cloth if it gives too many "its too dark" errors whilst its actually not thát dark. Tracking of the controllers sometimes goes funky, even if its within a sensor view: Clean the sensors with a soft cloth. Hope my comments help some people. The Rift S is not meant as a "2nd gen VR" upgrade from the Vive or Rift, more as a "We see the future of VR heading this way and we want people that have not experienced VR yet, to step in now." according to oculus' vision.

I couldn't address a lot of the points you raised without this video descending off into 30+ minutes of rambling, you kinda have to pick and chose what to include in things like this. i.e. the 10Hz downgrade is noticeable only when you swap between the Vive and Rift S in quick succession, in my opinion it was stand out noticeable as I had completely forgot about the refresh rate until I put on the Vive and it was immediately noticeably smoother... like holy shit why does this feel so much more fluid oh yea I forgot the panel is at 90Hz! But as I summarised in the video it isn't an issue at all with the Rift S at all. Regarding the response times of the panel, that wasn't noticeable to me so I wasn't going to mention that. But yea I agree with everything else you've said but again I have to try and simplify it somewhat. The 2nd generation thing is just semantics, 2nd revision, 2nd version, 2nd generation, its open to interpretation on what a new generation is but it really doesn't matter. Cheers for the input!

Bias is a bit overly dramatic, it's a preference. I bought everything here with my money and this is an opinion piece on which I prefer and which I'd buy again. I think I did a thorough enough job on explaining why too. There's no bias, if anything the bias would be towards the Vive as I owned that for 3 years and the rift only for a few weeks.

I didn't see the bias. He explained why he chose Rift S. The improved visuals. If you're going to be in VR that's pretty crucial. As he said the other things he can modify or improve on his own so they are weighted less for marks. It was a fair review in my opinion. A buddy of mine has the Vive. It was amazing. I have wanted one for awhile. Looking at purchasing one for Christmas. I have a gaming PC now to support a PC-based VR. I couldn't afford both at the same time. With the improved visuals and the more plug and play connectivity of Oculus I'm leaning toward that.

Reluctantly yes, the software issues seem to be getting worse for me before they're getting better. But I've bought a further two Rift S devices for use at work, purely on the strength of the ease of installation and setup. I can go to someones desk in an open plan office with my laptop and Rift S, and enable VR right then and there. The Vive is a far more static permanent install in a dedicated space. But tbh for home use, I think I'm beginning to lean more towards the Vive again as the software issues roll on with the Rift S. It's like they've got zero idea they exist, or have no interest in addressing them.

@@TornadoGod1 lol... because they discontinued the CV1, and I was like, why the hell would they do that? Even still The new S does not fit everyone that wants to get into VR, so for that I'm still scratching my head as to why Oculus chose that path, but I am enjoying the S none the less.

@@q6x the fact it's discontinued doesn't disable you from using your first oculus. Plus, sure it has downsides, but I think the positives outweighs the negatives and in the end, it makes it much more worth it than the CV1 given the fact they're the same price.

I have been into vr for a while now and I am planning to buy one soon. I had my eye on the original rift but realized they had stoped making them. The only thing that is holding me back from buying a rift s is the controller tracking. I do not want to get a vr that isn’t very immersive and loses tracking on my hands frequently.

Personally picked up a vive recently, steam vr is just a much more holistic experience with its built in web browser and TV mirroring. That, and I wanna slowly upgrade to the index over time possible starting with the controllers and then getting the headset and the vive allows you to do that super easily. I really appreciate Facebook making vr available to everyone and let's get more people in multiplayer lobbies! But there's no doubt for me that if you want the ultimate be experience and are willing to spend the cash, the steam vr systems are the way to go

I love my htc vive but I find the weight distribution is awful, even with my delux audio strap and hours of fitting the headset so the weight is more on my back, the headset feels really heavy after about an hour of play. I dont wanna say its uncomphterble to wear cause its very comfy. It just feels like it weighs alot. I saw somewhere that the rift s actually weighs a bit more then the vive but when I tried my freinds the headset felt 10x lighter idk why.

Both the vive and oculus work with steam vr, but the oculus has optional access to the oculus store which is built into the software that makes the headset run. The oculus store has some exclusives that are not playable on the Vive without 3rd party assistance.

You can still play games on steam with an Oculus S. I'm an oculus owner so I'm not sure if the vive can pay oculus games or not. There are some games on steam where the oculus has some compatibility issues but it's mostly with things like individual fingers being tracked on the controller

I have a rift s and here’s all the problems I have with it and why I’m considering selling and getting a vive Controllers: Feel very cheap and breakable Tracking ring might cause some people to experience what’s called a “handclap” Tracking: In BONEWORKS the insight tracking can’t track behind you so climbing and the body slot on you butt is hard and sometimes near impossible to reach After shutting down my computer my Guardian play space will slightly move and after long enough the guardian is so off center that you can punch a wall and the guardian doesn’t show up Headset itself: Halo headband allows shaking when doing large, violent, or quick motions the headset will shake making everything blurry or worst case scenario, the headset flying off your head entirely (I’ve experienced)

And then oculus released the oculus link and suddenly the rift s is pointless. Honestly they should’ve made the rift s the best they could’ve made it. It would be a reason to choose the rift s over the quest with oculus link. Now the difference is way too small. Right now the vr market is so confusing I don’t know what to buy. I have a 2070 super so my pc can handle the index, but it also has the usb-c port for easy connection for oculus link. I just want a good headset with good tracking, no matter what way I’m facing or where my hands are.

I understand people may think something like a oculus rift s may not feel like it will last. However, i have the psvr and had it since launch. It i imagine has the same feel as the rift s and my psvr has not had 1 issue. No breaks, marks, etc in almost 3 years. Its like new. At the end of the day, i find its more the way people treat their stuff than the other way around. Ive heard even solid products get broke by certain people and think......hmmm. Lol. At the end of the day, its only designed to sit on your head and move in the direction you look. If it where being used in a real life boxing or ufc fight, id expect it to break. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Thanks for the review. Im looking into the rift s myself. 😉👍

There’s lots of things we (creators) don’t talk about, because add them all together and you’ve got a 45-50 minute video and then the bulk of the feedback is how you waffle and ramble too much, the video is too long shorten it down etc. And then you get people saying you didn’t talk about stuff when you actually did! Anyway, basically I didnt talk about it because they both have jacks, so there’s no advantage for one or the other, I don’t use headphones anyway as I use PC speakers, and I think I might have just forgot as I was cobbling this together last minute!
