Before lift/tires, folks ought to look at a good set of sway bar disconnects. (Not all Wranglers come with them.) Just $100 or so is cheap insurance to keep all four wheels on the ground.

Important quote for off-roaders: "As slow as possible, but as fast as necessary" sometimes a touch of (carefully applied) momentum helps. Good video, as an off-road enthusiast I approve !!! Drove Jeeps for 10 years ('78 CJ7, '90 YJ) and an '07 Yamaha Rhino side by side for 7 years

Hey Tommy, could you do a video about buying a used off roader, like what features are important to try to get, things to check like wear and tear items that aren't maybe checked when buying a car (maybe like under carriage damage, cb joints, or oil leaks.) I'd like to buy a vehicle to take on trails and would like to see a buying guide video. Thanks for the great episode.

Good advice for rookies. Some things important on mod lists are rocker panel protection, tow points front and rear, if you are about to buy your first off roader, quality all terrain tires and an air compressor. Stay away from street treds. A shovel, tow/recovery strap, and a couple of folding lawn chairs. Nice to sometimes sit at an obstacle and watch how others do it. Have fun and be safe. Oh yeah, first aid kit , might need a band aid.

Also for mud and snow situations: Good rubber foot mats. If you get stuck in mud or snow, drop two down in front of tires with power and that should be enough to get you out.

Great Video. the only thing I think that was left out was on the safety part. make sure your wearing your seat belt and that it is adjusted properly. so it is not cutting in to your neck or below your shoulder, also keeping your hands and arms inside the window. if it rolls over it will take your finger off, and its not like you will be able to stop with your arm. anyway awesome video. how did you like that Rubicon hard rock? I have had mine for about a year, and I love it.

Unfortunately, many members of Congress (2/3? 3/4?) have no idea what you are doing with 4WD vehicles. Many (almost all) of them are under pressure to close all parts of the country to vehicular usage - with the possible exception of where there are existing roads. When they hear or read about “off-roading”, the image that language brings to their minds is people driving vehicles where no one has driven before or/and doing damage to the esthetics or the environment. Even worse, many of those members of Congress need nothing more than for you to say that the route you are driving is not a road - and they consider that to be an adequate reason to close that route to all vehicular - or at least all motorized - usage. If you care about keeping public roads on public land open to the public, please consider that, even before there were motor vehicles, a route that had been used and reused by full-size vehicles was considered a road. A route that had been used by smaller vehicles was usually called a “trail”. Wheeled vehicles were considered full-size if they had a track of 8-feet 4-1/2-inches or more. 8-feet 4-1/2-inches was the track width of the vast majority of vehicles that were pulled by teams of horses. One of the ‘49ers, for example, described the road his party was traversing as being “composed of equal parts of mud and boulders.” For that reason, it is reasonable (not merely arbitrary on the part of 4WD aficionados) to insist that a road is a road regardless of how a government agent or government agency may try to re-define that word. This strategy, however, has some possibility of helping to keep public roads on public land open to the public ONLY to the extent that owners of 4WD vehicles (and the businesses that provide services to the owners of 4WD vehicles) are careful to refer to roads as roads - not as trails. A road may be an unpaved road, a gravel road, a dirt road, a rocky road, an unimproved road or even an unmaintained road but it is still a road. If people want to disagree with me about HOW important it is to refer to roads as roads, that’s OK. I suspect it is more important than most 4WD owners realize.

If the driver is new the Rubicon model makes the driver less capable IMO, that equils more broken parts and in most cases unsafe, I would recomend learning to drive without all the extras turned on, 1 part jeep, 9 parts driver, not the other way around

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. (Psalms 51:1-4)

Good information in the video. So............ why have the newbie guy in the passenger seat look so young and nerdy? Not knocking his looks, it is what it is, but it is a stereotype. The "Motorhead" guy with the sweat shirt, five o'clock shadow and Olive Drab Jeep hat with rough torn brim teaches the young kid with glasses, no facial hair to speak of, plaid buttoned up shirt and newish baseball cap. Come on, so cliche.
