People new to Jeeps and or to off roading in general have been asking Cindy and I to make a video highlighting the some of the basics, tips and tricks that every newbie should know and for quite some time now. And, I have to say that we've been reluctant to do so if only because we know that we're not professionals or experts in anything and understand full well that the way we choose to do things isn't necessarily the right way, the best way or the only way. With that said, we finally got a chance to take Pippi, our bone stock, Jeep Wrangler JL 2-door Sport and with a stick, out on a trail known as Last Chance Canyon and to test her out on some rocks. And, while we were there, we decided to use the opportunity to film some of the things that we've learned over the years and share them with you. Things like, airing down your tires, disconnecting your front sway bar links, shifting into low range and picking a good line. Of course, the only thing we would ever hope for, is that the information you see might be of help to you someday.
Oh, as an added bonus, you'll also get to see JET testing out his new 38" Nitto Ridge Grapplers out on the rocks. We hope you enjoy.

I have watched this several times and I am just so darn impressed by the quality of the instruction AND the quality of the production. The real-world demonstrations of the truck’s capabilities, and the techniques you need to use, made it look like it was kind of just a documentary of a day on the trail, but the situations were obviously chosen to demonstrate each point. The episode was scripted, filmed and edited very professionally.

Excellent advice and superb attitude. Love the Rubicon demo without ever saying a thing about it. I greatly respect your skill and attitude dealing with minimalism. Moreover, that base Wrangler can be built up, but starting out with a Rubicon is the most economical way to do it. Enjoyed.

My wife and I lived in the Mountain West from 1982 to 2007 during which time we bought three new 4WD vehicles and a few used ones. Each of the three new ones had list prices under $19,000, manual transmissions, standard steel wheels, factory skid plates and recovery points and open differentials. None of them were lifted and we used 235/75R15 tires on all three of the ones we bought new. We drove those three vehicles on about 200 camping and picnic trips to more than 100 different locations, often using primitive (unimproved) or badly neglected and rutted roads to places many miles from the nearest paved roads. In 2008, our daughter totaled the last of those three vehicles so I’ve had to content myself with watching videos of other people driving 4WD vehicles. I think people with little or no 4WD experience would learn more useful information (and perhaps gain more inspiration) from watching this video than from watching any of the other dozens of videos I’ve seen so far - maybe even more than watching ALL of the other videos I’ve seen so far.

20 years ago we drove the “Big Jeep”. Long arm suspension , 35” tire, lockers and low gears. After awhile the fun and challenge of off roading lost its luster. When I stepped into my buddies Manuel TJ Sport on 31/10.5 15”s I had more fun on small simple obstacles than driving the Hammers on my built rig. It’s nice to be able to take the built rig out without limitations, but it’s also enjoyable to go explore and test yourself with the simple things. I run with guys who are constantly paranoid! They worry constantly about needing 37's, a 6 inch lift and a winch...I laugh and tell them they worry too much. What you do need are good skills, a good spotter and sensibility. Just don't do a trail that is beyond the capability of your rig....because no matter how capable your rig is, there's a trail that you won't be able to do. It was refreshing to see a trail run done with just the basics. Thank you.

The most important thing in this video are the repeated stalls. Showing that goes a long way towards helping people get over egos and worry about looking like a fool. Its much more fun for beginners when they aren't worrying about the old hands judging them.

Hats off!! In this short video, you showed all the fundamentals of off-roading for newbies. Airing down, swaybar disconnect, taking the right line, deciding when to take a by-pass, seeking help. But, more importantly, you demonstrated that newbies can off-road with a stock Wrangler (I have a JL Willys) without dropping thousands of dollars on gear. Thank you. How can I reach out to you for learning more one to one?

Used to have a 1997 TJ, loved it!! That was an excellent demonstration of the capabilities and limitations of stock vs. modified-nice job; very well made video! The biggest takeaway I received is how much of an advantage having an automatic is while off-roading! Wheels down!

I also noticed that every time you took a less than optimal line it was only because you were fighting the stick/clutch and had less than smooth throttle modulation. (You are definitely an expert and definitely modest about it) You obviously have a lot of Jeep toys with manuals in your stable and I'll bet some of those vintage ones are manuals. I'm wondering why you thought the stick would be better than the "stock" automatic for Pippy? I love manuals for classic road cars & sports cars (& I live in an area with big city traffic issues, where slow, stop & go with my manuals suck) but for low speed and/or off-road driving?? How can the manual be a benefit to you guys for Pippy?

DUDE!!!!! I've been waiting to see those new NITTO 38's on the JLU in action. I can't wait to get a set on my jeep. I'm assuming you'll do another video on just those tires and Jet. Great video, I noticed no lockers being used in the V-notch. Awesome to see the capabilities of our JL's in action and makes me appreciate my auto trans. Lol!. God bless you both. I hope to wheel with you guys when we make it out west next year. I'd love to join an event with you guys leading the way. You're an inspiration not only in the jeep but on the footage and editing and channel in general.

Thank you. We're truly humbled by your kind words and so happy to hear you enjoyed our video. Regarding the 38's, yes, we'll do a review on them soon. As far as no lockers being used goes, you really can't use them or at least fronts in the V-notch as you wouldn't be able to steer. Be great to meet and wheel with you some day.
