I’ve owned a 4runner TRD pro (2019) and now I drive a GX. So many reviews always have the “luxury” model. The most expensive GX with air suspension. The base one has KDSS and is amazing. You can get it brand new for around 55,000 which is very close to a TRD pro 4runner. So for roughly 3000 extra dollars can you get a silky smooth beautiful V8 and a transmission that is smoother and definitely better on the roads. The GX is amazing going 80 mph down the highway. The 4runner always felt like it was under powered and strained with no reserve for passing power. So from an on road perspective the GX is significantly better in my opinion and the MPG is almost identical. For sure a TRD pro 4runner is better off-road. That can be fixed on the GX which is definitely my plan (bumper/sliders). Let’s not forget that the GX can be had with red seats:-) To essentially be getting a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with some luxury features for the same price or a little bit more than a TRDpro… The GX was the one for me. The V-8 alone is worth the up charge.

I have owned both the FJ and currently a GX 460 and the GX is built to such a high standard it's really true about Japanese craftsmenship with both of these vehicles. Cons of the GX are fuel economy but I knew that before I bought it. Fulltime 4wd with a reliable Toyota V-8 is where it shines. Plenty of torgue to get it moving down the road but it's not a racecar for sure. I would say the engine power is "OK". The torque is the best benefit with an example of a 50mph speed it sits around 1200 rpm. At 70-75 mph it sits around 1800 -1900 rpm. Average hwy mileage is around 21 mpg with 4 passengers and gear. In town due to it's weight, it is getting around 16-17 mpg starting and stopping. One of the most reliable engines and drivetrain combos in modern times. These Gx 460s are each taken to a track and driven by 2 people for a series of driving tests before it can ship. This is how you get the quality in a product they have skilled workers and they take pride in the cars they produce. Go watch a factory tour video and see how things are made at Lexus. Pretty fanatical.

I love how people talk about the GX460's shortcomings, yet it's always there being stacked up against whatever the new hotness is at the moment. I'll admit that I have no love for the 2021 Lexus GX body molding crap. Yes; I agree that they should go back to the 2010 front end and throw on some rock sliders. But if you have 2021 GX460 dollars then cutting the bumper cover (to add an actual bumper) and replace the running boards, it just budget dust. The other two items that you may want to be change out (to hit the trail) are the tires and the intake (with an AFe Momentum GT Cold Air Intake System w/Pro 5R Filter Media) for the grunt the kid was tweaking about (basically you need to take that bubble wrap off the hammer so you can use it). I don't know what happened to the 0-60 time for the 2021 GX, but my 2010 is under 7 seconds at sea level. I'm okay with it being normally aspirated because the average elevation of the United States is roughly 2500 feet above sea level and that pushes my stock HP down to about 278. As for gas mileage; I don’t mind paying at the pump as I’m out $0.00 in repairs on my 2010 (correction I did replace a fuse back in 2018) and my GX depreciates at a rate of about $4.00 a day (5 year average). This is some I could never brag about with any of my Mercedes vehicles. So bash away guys; as I’ve literally don’t see a need to purchase a need SUV to replace the GX I have. But in the future, please don’t tell me how crappy a 4runner is and then how great a Land Rover is (they are much better these days) as it’s like peeing on my leg and telling me it’s raining. BTW; I still absolutely love the show…..You guys know how to have fun…….P.S. The 2021 Lexus GX460 is what happens when you let the Marketing guys manage a Toyota Prado.

The shortcomings of the GX impact only extreme offroading, so 2% of the actual 5% of owners who off-road them in the first place... It's inconsequential. Most of the people doing crazy offroading aren't buying new/paying Lexus anyway, so they're irrelevant. The few people offroading these are taking them on dirt and gravel roads, pastures, live in heavy snow and other "real world" scenarios rather than extreme hobbyist rock climbing nonsense.

I guess it all depends on what you need. The GX with V8 and 4 wheel has been great for towing my tritoon boat and pulling it out of the water on a steep wet boat ramp. I also plan on getting a camper so I'm not sure I would want the 4Runner V6.

hey. that 4.6Lv8 getting 16mpg is good. my dad has a 2016 ford edge awd with a 3.5L v6 and despite it not being or feeling fast it gets an average of 15l/100km which is about 15.5 mpg( he doesnt even drive fast).... so the gx has 2 more cylinders, 2 more seats, is more heavy, makes more power, can actually go offroad and gets better miles to the gallon than a 3.5L v6 from ford...

I just bought a 2022 GX460 Premium and the updated infotainment system in this is much much better than the old one. Plus, if you price a 4Runner TRD Pro these days good luck finding one at MSRP but I just paid MSRP for my GX. I love my GX and can't wait to take it out to the desert to do some off-roading. The FJ is just full of compromises and it doesn't really work as a daily driver nor can you haul much in it. This is a car for a single 20 year old.

I have both a gx and t4r trail, both lightly modded and it’s a toss up. For family stuff/road trips goes to the gx and for off road and camping I go with the t4r. My bro had a fj and he eventually changed to a 4runner due to the low viz and horrendous highway noise.

I have both an FJ Cruiser and a GX460; the 2010 FJ was $28K and has 94K mile, the 2012 GX was $24K. I thinks they are both great vehicles but it is hard to not like the luxury of a Lexus. I am taking the FJ off-road to Lake City but I am taking the Lexus on the road trip to Denver.

Roman is at that age where comfort is the #1 deciding factor. Lol. Stupid thing is if they just gave it the same treatment as the one they converted for that show they would probably sell tens of thousands at 80k to 90k. People would by that comfort and luxury if it just had 33" tires, a high quality 3" lift without the air suspension, a locker and some real bumpers and skid plates for protection.

The 4Runner has something that the GX and the FJ definitely don’t have. APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO!!!
@andyham60943 жыл бұрын
The 4Runner is just the most versatile. Comfortable on road yet just a capable tank off road. It’s just the perfect balance between the other 2, it’s more similar to the fj but feels like a perfect middle ground and just the most versatile for all different driving and lifestyles. The fj is still a super fun awesome little truck but not as versatile as the 4Runner and doesn’t have as much room.

Look at a used GX460 around 13’. I love mine and it was a no brainer in cost comparison, power and features compared to the 4Runner. The luxury feel and tank like feel is just a perfect mix. They say there isn’t much of a power difference but switch the 4Runner to 4wd and it’s a major difference.

TRD Off road 4runner with kdss is the best. The kdss makes it corner like it's on rails and the kdss comes with stiffer shocks so it doesn't have the TRD Pro nose dive issue.

I think the key here is if you could only have one “do it all” vehicle, the 4Runner wins every time. I’m not a Toyota fan boy, but if I had to downsize and could only have one family car it would probably be a 4Runner. The wrangler lacks interior space for a family of 5 and the Bronco isn’t out yet. Subarus are cool but are soft roaders (I say that owning one and a couple of 4x4s) And I’m gonna get heat for this too but the Tacoma isn’t practical for the price. If you need a truck go full size. If you want Toyota reliability get a 4Runner.
@itr08633 жыл бұрын
you are right about the tacoma. my wife's old CRV has more rear seat room than the taco. i have an 18' 4R off road and the rear seats are perfect for the size of the 4R.

I have a 5th gen trd orp 4Runner and love it. The GX takes premium fuel and has a side opening hatch, not a fan of. The FJ has a hard to see out of windshield. Yes I overpaid for my 4Runner, $54k…when it is really worth say $40-42k just 2-3 years ago.
