When I was a kid, my dad owned a square body suburban with a 454 in it. His friends at the time were buying diesels, and they all told him he was nuts for buying a big gas v8 to pull our Air Stream. But I remember my dad passing those diesels when we got into the mountains, dad had the last laugh.

A diesel is built for working, not driving fast, diesel fuel has more stored energy than gasoline which is why they run leaner and get the same as the smaller gas counterparts

Talked with someone a while back who had the 6.2L F150 (non raptor, uncommon since it was a $5000 option), asked him what kind of mileage it gets, and he said 14. 14 city, 14 highway, 14 towing, 14 while parked in the garage...

my parents back in the 80s and 90s towed their lawn trailer with big block v-8 cars. the smallest of which was a 400 Chrysler the largest a 460 ford . those cars got 7 mpg. 7mpg towing. 7mpg in the city. 7 on the highway.

I have the 6.2 liter in my 2012 F-250. It can get 16 on the highway at a steady 60-70 more like 10 to 12 in stop and go traffic. I live in the mountains and it pulls old heavy 50's cars on trailers with easy.

My dad has had a v10 excursion for many years. We road tripped it back and forth between Ohio and Georgia many times over the years including the high gas price era around the great recession. In fact, I remember coming back down to Georgia with the radio on around probably summer 2007 or 2008 and the talk show hosts talking about the impending economic doom coming. Interspersed with triple digit fuel stops, good times.

My 8.1L Yukon averages 8.3 mpg towing a 6k lb trailer daily. Reliability is awesome though, it just keeps on keeping on, day in and day out.

@@bldontmatter5319 I drove a rabbit diesel pickup years ago. It would get 40+ mph on the highway, but it struggled to even reach 65 mph let along maintain that speed. 70 mph was basically not doable, and it killed every mosquito within range of its opaque exhaust plume. I never saw a diesel Rabbit that after about 2 years old, was not a smoky stinker. They were all horrible little road blockers. I also drove a Isuzu diesel P’up and it was so slow, any speed over about 55 was a fantasy dream. But it did sip very little diesel. Those were two trucks I never ever aspired to own or drive.

Agreed! Diesels aren't really practical unless you're hauling or towing most of the time...gassers have lower maintenance costs and will do all the work a diesel can especially if you just tow or haul on occasion.

Those mileage numbers are actually pretty good. An '02 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0 gets about 14-15 MPG and an OBS Suburban with a Vortec 350 gets that also. Maintenance on modern diesel emissions systems is so horrific that big block gassers are making a comeback.

I'm a Suburban......fan I guess you would call me. I have a 98 1500 4x4 with a 5.7 a 99 2500 4x4 with a 7.4 a 03 Yukon Denali XL with 6.0 AWD. A few things I have noticed. First the T400s, or OBS, have a better ride and seats are better as well. Of the 2 T400s the 2500 has the better ride. The rear barn doors are the way to go. Both T400s have the barn doors but the Yukon, T800, has a hatch.

Agreed. I try to save my truck for longer road travels on the road without catching a light. I do get 14.3 to 16 combined. 12/14-16/16-18 for fuel economy city/combined/hwy in my 97 but I do have mods that help with getting that mpg. It is a 2wd, but built it out making my own 1500hd lol. Bigger tires, tool box, bigger shocks, heavy duty suspension components etc... I like the cloth seat and its comfortable for me. Not a huge fan of leather.

@@originallynot When you make the drive on the regular from Phoenix, AZ to Payson, AZ - which is a jumpoff point to northern NM, The Navajo nation, and a bunch of other places, you see the highway littered with these powerplants you mention. The reason I mention that stretch are the extended 6%+ grades and swinging temps through the canyons. It's never the older stuff on the side of the road. If I have a $1200/mo car payment AND a $300+ towing bill, I am 100% going to be super pissed off if I am getting passed on the side of the road stranded by a 1994 chevy 1500 with a 5.7 liter TBI pig... Every one of those turbo 4 cyl trucks towing a trailer is getting passed by 1990s trucks with a 460 or 454 in the mountains because there's not enough heat conductive metal surface area to get the heat away from the combustion chamber.

2000 Ex 6.8 v-10 4.30 gears, 12+mpg at 65 mph, 11 mpg between 70-80, 12 mpg 80-90. Love it!

My 2000 ex with the 7.3 and 33's and stock gear ratio and 400lb front bumper and 3" lift gets over 18mpg highway at 65mph on the 60hp street tune (I have the hydra chip)

Weird mine gets 17 mph at 65 V10 as well. Odd. Lincoln LS V8 gets 24 mph at 65. Corse it has K&N intake with throttle Air Cleaner.

Problem with these vehicles is they consume an insane amount of fuel sitting idle. So drive throughs, around town, or traffic jams on the interstate will all make the theoretical max mpg impossible to ever sustain. Source: Yukon XL 6.0L owner 10mpg city, 16 or so highway

My family had a 2004 GMC Yukon XL 2WD w/ the 8.1L. Was an amazing vehicle that took us all over the western US hauling boats and jet skis up and down the Colorado River. This video really made me smile and brought back memories. Thanks for making it. 👍🏽

I just purchased a 2004 GMC Yukon XL SLT 5.3L. I love it. And I am a Ford guy. And it may not be the 8.1L so hard to compare but I am hitting upwards of 20mpg. Very happy with these units.

Honestly who cares how much gas they burn. If you’re in the market for for an extra large SUV with great capabilities, it’s not going to be fuel efficient plain and simple. I would take their reliability and simplicity than a modern truck or EV.

I used to own a 2011 Chevy traverse. I on average got 15 mpg out of a V6. Crazy to think they got close to the same mpg with much bigger engines and vehicles.

I had an early 80s K30 with 4:56 axles. Got 5 Mpg highway and 8 city. 4 bbl 454 would really roar at 55 mph. In low range it was amazing.

I grew up in that era of trucks and uou aint kidding about those motors SCREAMING at freeway speeds. Had a 78 K20, 4.10's and an SBC 400, she was right around 3k rpm at 60mph.

@62guitarguy I think o.d. came in around 86/87 or so for the 1/2 tons. Otherwise they had TH350&TH400 3 speed automatics. Unless ya got an SM465 manual. I consider that to be a 3 speed as 1st gear is something like a 6.5:1 or so.

Ahhh the sound of that 6.8 gave me so many flashbacks of road trips with my family as a kid. I’m a diesel fan now, but the v10 is still one of my favorites. Super reliable engine, despite the bad reputation.

Kinda like brandons student college loan "forgiveness". I can't edit to see the look on those students faces when they get a 1099-misc for the $20k that they received. And by the way , taxes on that $20l are due in full on 15 April 2023.

I just purchased a 2003 Excursion with 6.8 last weekend. Drove it 688 miles from Phoenix, AZ metro area to Amarillo, TX and I was pleasantly surprised I got 15.5 mpg. That was even with an hr delay in NM going 8 mph. I did baby it a little on the drive but great numbers. This one is really well maintained and only 113k miles.

Yes, if you keep your foot out of it and drive it reasonably they get decent mileage for what they are. Now try putting 7 people and all their luggage in a small fuel efficient car, not going to happen! LOL

@@dodgeguyz with the fuel he uses you can fill 3 full efficient cars to drive 16 people and their luggage the same way. And if those 12 people don’t need to to the same route, they can split up. These big trucks things are dinosaurs. Yes, they are cool, obviously very comfortable and good for road-trips. But what all the wasteful lifestyle led to can be seen all around the world. The US is 4% of the world’s population, smaller than the EU (and fewer people), but produces the most plastic waste. Being number one is cool, but not on pollution…

I'm only driving my wife and kids. Yes, it's lots of gas but we purchased it to be comfortable on trips, fill the cargo area with groceries and strollers and from what I've read reasonably reliable and inexpensive to fix.

Even with these high gas prices I’m still liking my low maintenance v10 ex and f250. The misses has a 7.3 ex and my v10 tows just as well.

I have a 2002 GMC Yukon XL 2500 with an 8.1 and have driven many miles. I can confirm 13-14 mpg w/o towing is accurate.

1997 K2500 GMC Suburban SLT (pre Yukon days) 7.4L Vortec L29, 4L80E, GM HD 14-bolt with 4.10:1 final drive, 11-12 MPG avg, mixed driving use.

@Peter Angles 2000 would be the GM Vortec 8100 at 8.1L (L18), just shy of 496ci. It's predecessor, the Vortec 7400 was 7.4L (L29), but was not in any 2000 Suburban/Yukon.

I disagree with you sentiment about big V8s. Ford has their new 7.3 gasser and Chevy punched out their 6.0 to 6.6. These V8s are a good alternative to modern, pain in the rear, diesels with their DEF, failing PDF filters and high pressure fuel pumps.

$6500 for "fuel contamination" that made the high pressure pump fail. all fuel lines,rails injectors replaced and tank flushed. can get complete v10 installed for that or less

You have to remember.... Diesel engines of years past before Cummins, 99 7.3, and Duramax motors were the actual "Economy" options. They were way more efficient and Diesel was way cheaper than gas and WAY nastier than modern ULSD. They were incredibly loud compared to Gas V8s. They did not make as much power as the Large displacement V8s and in all honesty you didnt need any more power in the old wet noodle frame trucks with no brakes and bad suspension.

I know the 1992 F350 i owned had a 460 Automatic with 4.10 axles, and I would love to own it again today. Nothing wimpy about it. Ran an 8 ft. Western and when you raised it there was no droop in that frontend NONE. That plow just raised. Two skids of rock salt in the bed 49 50lb. bags per skid no problem. And a towing SOB.

Yep the 2nd gen cummins ram was rated for like 450lb/ft tq stock. A big block gasser does that from 2500-6000rpm at sea level. It's very different today with modern tech - diesel is king. I wish they had taken the time to put a blower or turbo on the gas options before they killed the displacement.

Even with the LB7 the 8.1 was still the top engine as far as rated towing capacity from GM. It was only like 500lbs difference but still interesting to see in the early years of the modern truck diesels.

Thats true especially when you consider that these beast only had 4 spd Autos. And the Excursion could be equipped with a 4.30 rear end, so going over 70 in these things will cause the mpgs to plummet

My 2007 Silverado dually with a 8.1L and 6 speed 4.10 gears can get up to 15 mpg going 60-65mph on the highway. More common is 13-14mpg highway. A lower speed and the extra overdrive gear helps a lot.

When we buy this trucks we know what kind of fuel mileage it don’t get (yet we get them anyway) it’s the love of the ride. I have a 2001 excursion and I love it to death even at $6.00 per gallon

I have a 1999 Ford f350 V10 supercharged kennebell with 4.88 gears and a gearvendors underoverdrive it pulls like a mother and I get 16 mpg because of the underoverdrive its a nice truck not one scratch on it and 78.000 miles on it

I've been averaging around 13.5-14.2 in my 00 Yukon Denali with the 5.7L Vortec/4l60e with 3.73 gearing.

Love my 05 Suburban 8.1L! Its an LT with 4WD and all the bells and whistles. It does everything I want. Rear cargo area can be 8ft x 4ft FLAT. Tows great, rides nice and I can't see anything that can compete with it as a total package. Its a mini van, truck, road trip & tow vehicle all in one - truly a real SUV. MPG is "as expected" my average according the the computer is 10.3 over the last 2,000 miles or so, and that includes 40% city, 60% highway and approximately 40% of that towing a 9,000lb trailer. I paid a lot for mine - it only has 50K miles and is like new. I did compare it to much newer vehicles, and even looked at brand new. Very pleased with the decision!

I see people in the comments discussing how they need vehicles this size for their lifestyles, while nearly no one in Europe even remotely considers a car like this. I think it is also a culture thing. For example, owning a boat, atv, dirtbike, whatever isn't that common here, hence no one needs a truck to pull it. We do like caravanning, but ours can be towed by a wagon or crossover suv. We also need a truck driving license if we want to use trucks such as these at anywhere near their towing capacity. Such a license isn't that common among private consumers. We also have more cramped infrastructure, way higher fuel prices, and smaller driving distances of course. I think those also matter. For work, people here mostly use four cylinder turbodiesel vans. People rarely use this same vehicle for private transportation. This seems to work fine. I guess those vans aren't as comfortable as American pickup trucks/body on frame suvs, which is why we don't use them for private transport.

I had one for 13 years. Bought it to tow our 35ft TT. Initially with the 3.73’s it got 15 on the highway at 70. City/hwy it got 12. Towing it got 5.5! So I swapped it to 4.30’s. Hwy went to 14.2 city/hwy was at 12.5 and towing increased to 6. You have to also remember that these things can do what 3 fuel efficient cars can do, so for a road trip without towing they are more fuel efficient than a small car. Later on I 5star tuned it and added a air deflector to the top of the X and my towing mileage topped out at 7.2. I miss it, but now we have a V-10 class A MH. BTW, the Ford seats are very comfortable. I’ve spent up to 12 hours on road trips towing my TT and was never fatigued or was my bit sore!

I think these expeditions are the best looking and most capable trucks Ford ever produced and I love the v10 engine. I had two friends who had a v10 and a Ford diesel, and the v10 blew the diesel away pulling trailers up through the mountains where we live

13.5 is quite impressive for that Excursion. The V-10's with 4wd were rated at 8 & 12. And hes right about how smooth that engine is. Its probably one of the reason y they last so long

Return trip was the downhill run, and why the Excursion was able to recover some range from it's dismal halfway point MPG numbers. I would take the Suburban/Yukon all day, every day, over the Excursion.

In some ways these motors are making a come back due to emissions and lack of fuel economy on the 3/4tons. Ford had brought out the 7.3L gas V8 recently in 3/4ton trucks which is even bigger than the 6.8L V10 of old and even more archaic architecture.

I drove a brand new Uhaul 26' with the 7.3 gasser and it's a big downgrade over the 6.8 V10 in other box trucks I've driven. It's so detuned and the trans is so slow and confused that it probably doubles 0-60. It's almost Ryder diesel slow even when empty despite having a lot more horsepower (on paper).

@@chimrichalds5205 I just wish the companies were honest in a way. The 7.3L isn't a bad motor, but the real advantages of it aren't really being passed on to the consumers. It isn't built for fuel economy like Ford says... It isn't really chosen architecture for durability like Ford says. It is CHEAP to produce, and relatively small package to fit into lots of trucks. theoretically it should be cheaper to maintain as well, but with the bad fuel economy you might not be saving anything. This is about profits for Ford, and nothing else. Honestly I am disappointed with the power output for the size. Ford gets nearly 700hp out of a 5.0l V8 in a Raptor, they should be able to offer at least 575lb ft of torque out of 7.3L of displacement...

I have owned three excursions and 2 suburban 2500s with the 8.1 liter, they were all awesome vehicles, and with raising 4 kids they were perfect, the fords definitely lower maintenance cost, my 6.0 diesel excursion on 35s and custom lift got 19 mpg. Loaded with passengers and luggage, it had some upgrades over stock

My buddy has a 2003 chevy suburban 1500 with the 5.3 v8 and it's got 315k miles and we just drove it to the beach and back. It's about a 1100 mile round trip. And his suburban got 22 miles per gallon and has a 31 gallon tank. We only used 3/4 tank going there but around town he only gets about 13.5 miles per gallon

I had two v10 f550 rollback tow trucks. They averaged 6.4mpg, and their cost of operation was far lower than the diesels. Even with a new engine every 250k miles, still cheaper cost per mile. I did have to change the oil every 5k miles to make them last that long, though

@@rbryanhull Math does not lie. The number 1 cost of ownership for any vehicle is depreciation. Number 2 is fuel. I think #7 is maintenance. Maintenance is actually less than insurance even. There's a reason that the entire over the road transportation sector switched to diesel in the 60's. Fuel economy. Not torque. Not longevity. The cost of running a fleet is dominated by fuel costs. Extra cost of maintenance is a drop in the bucket if it even exists in modern electronically controlled vehicles.

@@erikkovacs3097 depreciation is far higher when the acquisition cost on the diesel is $10k more than the gas truck. Especially when you run both trucks until the depreciation period has ended. Look, I'm really tired of arguing with you. I tracked every metric of every truck in my fleet. Cost per mile, the gas trucks cost me less. I ran them until they were worth less than $10k each. The diesels had really high ticket maintenance needs, and I could replace a v10 engine for less than the cost of new injectors in the diesel. The only real advantage to the diesel was higher front end weight which made recoveries easier without standing the front end up when winching. But the diesels went through tires faster, also for the same reason. Excess torque and weight burns up tires faster.

@@rbryanhull That's not how depreciation works and depreciation period doesn't end. The spread starts out at 10%-15% of purchase price and with diesels it grows to 50% or more. So your 10 year old gas truck is $10K while your diesel is $20K. I don't know what to tell you. What you're saying goes against not just my experience but everyone else's too. Every large fleet is diesel. 99% of class 8 trucks are diesel. You're sitting here telling me the moon is made of cheese and I just flat out don't believe you and judging what everyone else is buying, no one else does either.

2008 wasn't all that much cheaper than currently, which fuel economy was the reason Ford killed the Excursion. It was killing their Federal CAFE rating.

Here in Norway the Excursion with a diesel goes for 5k.They where sold new here by Ford,and are quite easy to find.Looks like there could be a market in shipping them back to US?.

We have a 2001 7.3. bought it from the original owner in 2004. Still driving strong. Although it's under the shade now I drive it once or twice a week to keep the batteries charged. It's always there starts right up every time. Never any issues. 298,000 miles.

The only diesel options ever available in the Suburban was the 6.2IDI and the 6.5IDI (with and without turbo I believe for the 6.5).

My 2000 Excursion has 300,000 miles on it and will get 21-22 mpg on back roads driving easy. Yup. Drove from West Tennessee to Springfield, Mo and got over 21 mpg. Now, it's a 7.3L diesel though.

Awesome video - I'd like to see more videos like this, with "affordable" older cars that most Americans drive and hold onto for decades. Also, as some others have commented, please run a comparison with the modern Ford "Godzilla" 7.3L V8 against the Excursion. It would be interesting to see which is more fuel efficient and what the "break-even" point would be with buying (relatively) new vs. maintaining a used vehicle.

On a 6,000-8,000 lb SUV, things like auto retracting air-dams and turbo 4 s and 6 cylinders can only do so much. You're still moving a 6.5' tall, 18 foot long, 6,000 lb vehicle down the road.

These vehicles show better on the highway in city mileage will struggle to get to 10. Newer vehicles do better in town especially hybrids which can shut the engine down and use electric power

My Excursion V10 gets 11.8 city, 15.1 HWY, and 12.4 towing 9,000lbs consistently. I do keep maintenance up to keep efficiency. 4.11 rear gears

Tommy I think you’re wrong about big gasser HDs being a thing of the past. Ask any Duramax or powerstroke owner about what it costs them to replace injectors, injection pump, head gaskets, or turbo…Also look at the reviews of the 7.3 Godzilla gasser lately. Also notable is that an emissions diesel truck gets similar mpgs towing to a gasser (even an old one like the 2 in your video). If you put an 8 or 10 speed trans behind an 8.1 it would tow very comparably and have similar mpgs to newer gassers.

Ask 7.3 gasser owners about dropped valve seats. A lot of injector problems are caused by lack of maintenance. ignoring LB7 Head gaskets... dont buy a 6.0 Turbo... Dont buy a 6.4 or early 6.7 Injection pumps.... Dont buy a 6.0 or 6.4 Fuel mileage? HA HA HA A gasser cannot touch the actual fuel mileage of a Modern Diesel. You forget about a huge part of why you buy a Diesel...... Longevity......

My 2003 F-250 v10 gets the same 8.5mpg as my sister's 2019 Ram 2500 6.4l V8 towing my 8500lb travel trailer on the same route. Not much has changed other than better mileage unloaded and creature comforts. The 6.4 makes 100hp more but basically the same amount of torque ~425 ft/lbs. If I had the 6 speed manual in the Ford, I know i could do better than Ram.

People are buying big gas engine pickups again All the manufacturers have had certain diesels that were junk none quite to the level of the 6.0 ford And that includes the gm Dinosaurs Even the Cummins being taken out by a bolt that rusts off the grid heater And plenty of injector probs in a d max All d Max's need a lift pump add one now I put 10 injectors first 175k then a lift pump 200 more k w same injectors

I think these motors are a better fit for these over the underpowered 6.0 or 5.4 gas engines they put in them. These motors don’t have to work as hard as the smaller gas v8’s do so I can see why the mpg isn’t horrible.

I briefly drove a V10 Excursion, back in 2010 or so. The mileage we got was pretty comparable, in other words it cost an absolute fortune to run. On the plus side, it was super comfortable and we had 3 small children at the time, so going on trips we had tons of room for strollers, bicycles, and whatever other stuff they wanted to bring along.

Ummm, didn't Ford *just* come out with a new 7.3L Big Block for the 2020 model year that is still available? Also, it sounds like the Excursion has some pretty serious gear whine. The Sterling 10.25" is known for the pinion nut loosening up, which might be your problem and can eventually cause catastrophic failure. You might want to look into that.

I own an 06 yukon xl 5.3L and average 16.8 mpg. Pretty happy so far. Truck only has 111k original miles and I'm the second owner. Love that truck and don't see myself selling it anytime soon

In 2004 GM had a dual tank option with 52 gallon capacity. My wife’s daily driver was the K2500 Suburban with the 8.1. 12 mpg every day, even towing. I always made sure to fill up at half a tank as, at $5/gallon back then, I still had to reset the fuel pump at least once.

Loved my 2001 suburban 2500 8.1L . Paid 7500 for it in 2013 with 130k miles. Sold it for 5500 in 2021 with 240k miles. 😂😂. Still ran like a Cadillac when I sold it but was getting 9 mpg.

My Landcruiser 100 (has 1FZ-FE inline-6 4.5 liter) gets around 11.5 US MPG (highway) and 9.5 City driving so these numbers seem pretty good to me considering that 8.1 beast under the hood

There is no better large SUV built than the GMT 800 platform. The 2500 Suburban with an 8.1 is a bit of a unicorn and super desirable. It will literally run forever if maintained. Did anyone else notice what sounded like gear whine or transmission whine the whole time Tommy was recording in the Excursion? It went away when he lifted off the gas and came back as soon as he accelerated.

'97 GMT-400 C/K2500 Suburban, 7.4L L29, and the best seats GM ever made ('95-'98). The GMT-800 has the second best seats. Over 208,000 miles and still runs like new. The only real difference between the 7.4L and the 8.1L is a slightly longer stroke to achieve 8.1L. Both use the same block and heads.

My dad had one of those yukon XLs with the 6L I always wished he didnt sell it so a couple yrs ago i bought a 06 silverado, has all the nostalgia but it was still very different so it’s totally my own, i love it so much and if i could have the 8.1 i would love one just for the hell of it

When my family used to have a 2005 diesel Excursion we got from a friend, we had it converted to a full hybrid so it would get more MPG and we wouldn’t have to stop for gas as often. MPG boosted from 18 miles to the gallon to 30. Emissions were a lot lower, too.

Love the V10 Excursion, always wanted one and they are falling into my price range, but at this time (gas prices) think I will stick with my 2012 CRV (150k) only doing maintenance, and getting 26mpg

Yeah exactly, the difference is they never stopped making Suburban/GMC Yukon XL that basically kept almost the same size as the old ones but I don't remember if they're still body on frame like the original SUVs

A few summers ago, a company I was working for had a few V10 Excursions. I drove one on a single occasion and it had to be one of the most dissapointing motoring experiences of my entire life. You would think a 6.8L V10 would be fairly impressive but it felt to me like it wouldnt even get out of its own way. The most gutless, fuel thirsty lump of metal I think I have ever driven.

I have the 6.8 L, 3valve Triton on my 08 F350 Crewcab, Superduty 4x4 Lariat with every option. Has not let me down. We tow a 8000 pound bumper pull travel trailer. 8mpg. No trailer it gets up to 14mpg on the freeway. Great motor!

The Suburban/Yukon 8.1L Vortec 8100 (and it's predecessor, the 7.4L Vortec 7400) produce more horsepower and torque than any of the competing Ford petrol engines used in the Excursion. The seats were good in the GMT-800 Suburban/Yukon (this video), but the '95 through '98 GMT-400's had the ultimate seats for long road trips, in comfort. Also, unlike that Triton V-10, the GM engines don't randomly jettison any of their spark plugs, making the GM V8 engines considerably more reliable, while making more power, and consuming less fuel than the V-10's.

I had a 2008 Pontiac Torrent GXP SUV, which is a rebadged Chevy Equinox, for three years. The Torrent was equipped with a 3.6L V6 engine, and typically got 13-16 mpg. I was always in disbelief at how bad on gas that vehicle was for its size. I Think it had a 17 gallon gas tank and usually the estimated range would be about 230 miles, and that's about what I got. Now I have an 11th gen Civic with a 10 or 11 gallon tank that gets about 400 miles per tank.

3.6 is a real turd, combine that mpg with dropping the entire subframe for a timing chain every 100k, GM had both honda J35's and the 3.6 in the Saturn Vue and you'll never guess which one got better mileage...

@@cwyckisslick9444 The engine was very reliable in that car but the gas milage and transmission were awful. I gave my running Torrent with no lights or codes away for $1200 and got a brand new CR-V to replace what the Torrent was used for.

I'd like to see how they compare under load. I've towed with a V10 before, and at 65 with my 71 F250 behind it it turned in a hair under 13. A similar load behind a 6.7 limiting myself to 10psi was only 14.

I ditched our 2018 ram 3500 HO for one of the 8.1's and it is way cheaper in the pocketbook in the end. Maintenance is so much cheaper and when towing, the diesel would just suck down def even with a small cargo trailer. I love mine, I just hope it never gets totaled as I would not know what to get next...

I had an 8.1 ext cab short bed and it sucked stopping at a pump every 125 miles for gas so a bigger tank would have been a blessing.

I had a 01 Silverado with the 8.1 and the Alison tranny I put a shift kit in the trans and had a chip and I got 18 on the highway pretty consistent if I drove it nice around town I got about 12 but I could tow whatever I wanted pull and that trucked loved the mud and off road I miss that truck so much I was hit in the passenger side by someone who ran a red light at 60 mph the truck ate it it was a charger that hit me in 2015 the truck o my had 80 thousand miles on it when totaled I walked away just fine and it only totaled out because the cost of damage all the damage caused could have been fixed they said but they would not pay it due to the age of the truck it was a beautiful rust free and sting truck that 8.1 is the best gm gas motor ever made by far

@@johnhaines6546 I had a shift kit that helped a lot controlling rpm’s at speed and the chip helped a lot if I drove it nice and was easy on it I could hit 18 pretty consistent my average was 16.5 or so driving normal and that’s not to bad for a 2500hd truck with 33 inch tires and factory lift

Love these videos with these old trucks...I'm A GM guy so I'd go with the 8.1 GMC any day...used to have a 96 GMC Sierra 2500 4x4 with the 454 Vortec...it was a special order truck because it was an extended cab with the 6.5 ft box so it only had a 25 gal tank. Almost all of the 454 equipped trucks had the long bed so they could fit the 36 gal tank...damn thing was always out of gas with the little tank. I got it with around 100k mi on it and back then it got 10mpg whether in town or highway. As it got older it started getting 7/8 in town and 10 on highway. Best I ever got in the 16 years I owned it was 12 mpg which was sensational for that truck.

@@bldontmatter5319 oh trust me, she was maintained and treated well, always got regular oil changes and plugs/wires/cap/rotor but she just got old and tired and her power and mpg went way down as she approached 300k mi. Sold it not too long sgo, didnt need it for what i bought it for anymore and with gas being so high it was pointless to keep

I believe the V10 and V8 excursions were a toss up on fuel because the V8 was working harder.

This I would agree. On paper the v8 only got about 2mpg better but in practice I'm not so sure.

The fuel economy hinges on the amount of work performed,so if you're moving a 10klbs load its gonna take certain amount fuel regardless of displacement or number of cylinders,where the lower displacement and lower number of cylinders comes in to play is when cruising and not using all the available power since you have to fill more cylinders or more displacement with fuel hence wasting fuel.

Yep, mpg difference is nil. I never saw the point of offering the 5.4l in the Excursion. The 2V 5.4l was a good engine but for the size of the Ex the 6.8l is a better fit. With the super duty the 5.4l made more sense because a regular cab was much lighter than the Ex.

We have the same gmc suburban in my family, bought new and no major problems but a bad seal in the axle. It currently has 150k miles .

The thing is I wouldn't be averse to buying one of these vehicles because they're straightforward and cheap to maintain. The idea of a modern diesel is nice because of the power and decent fuel economy but they are way too advanced and complicated with all the failure points and whatever I save on fuel I will end up spending on maintenance/repairs plus having to deal with down time not to mention the vehicle will be bloody expensive. At most that 8100 Vortec and V10 Triton in the ford will only need regular oil changes, spark plugs every 100k miles, a sensor or two or a gasket here and there and all the work can be done at home in the driveway.

The Ford has tires with an aggressive tread patter compared to the Yukon so I'm curious what the mpg if they both had highway tires. I have a 1997 Suburban K1500 and I averaged 17mpg from San Diego to Nashville last year but I did get about 15mpg from mid Oklahoma to 80 miles East Memphis because of the worst rain storm I've ever drive through and I was only driving 55mph in that area where as the rest of the trip at 17+ mpg I was averaging 70+ mph. My Suburban has a 42 gallon tank and I love that it's so big so I don't have to visit the gas station as much but it does cost a kidney to fill it up.

The tires surely have more drag than the Yukon. Looks like the Excursion tires are up sized too, look like 285/75R16 which are over an inch taller and an inch wider than the 265/75R16 that usually came on it from factory. Plus the Excursion is a good bit heavier. Excursion did better for mpg than I was expecting.

2000 Excursion limited. 6.8 4.30 gears. Transforce A/T tires at 70psi. 14mpg around town. I miss that truck.

Switch drivers and do the same loop. Incredible how close this was. Also, the 7.3 IDI engine gained the 'Powerstroke' badge after some minor changes and the addition of a turbo. So many IDI owners were installing aftermarket induction kits, Ford decided to install one from the factory.

The 7.3 IDI only shares displacement with the power stroke. Nothing on the IDI is the same as the power stroke due to the PSDs HEUI injection, and electronic controls. The 7.3 IDI is a bored out 6.9

I frequently drove a crew cab long bed Silverado in Japan. It honestly wasn’t that bad. It sure looked ridiculous trying to fit into any parking spot though!

They wait 30 seconds. Probably enough time not to flood the evap crap. Two click without waiting is devastating no doubt. Seen lots of ford's with evap issues because owners feel like they gotta top off all the way at every fill-up.

Hybrids make so much sense for a big truck that tows half or more of the time. The electric motor gives the starting torque and highway cruising efficiency. They just didn't take off like I expected back then. Maybe now they will.

Gm tried this actually, it was a big v8 engine with a hybrid power train. It was an early 2000s model I think? It ended up not being much more efficient.

I’ve owned both of these, both lifted on 35s. They both got around 11 mpg all around. The GMC’s torque reigned supreme though. And the Excursion is based on the Super Duty, not the Power Stroke. The PS is an engine. The SD is a platform.

I bought both of these trucks at the same time one time on accident.. well kind of… I was driving and my friend being stupid pulled my E brake and I hit six park cars two of them being these two vehicles, both of them at the time within two weeks of being purchased brand new. Thank God for full coverage insurance

Liquefied petroleum gas. In America some fleets convert to lpg, but because there are so few places that sell it, conversions are pretty rare for privately owned vehicles.

Use to own a dodge conversion van with a fifty gallon tank. It was a 1984 . Had the TV and vcr. Was actually the best road trip vehicle I've ever owned. Even with a tired 5.2 highway mpg was about 20 without a trailer. Can't imagine how much it would cost to fill now.

I remember when i was younger we had a 2003 expedition and i owned a 2000 expedition and a 2006 jeep commander. Driving a 100 miles on the highway without fueling was a dream come true haha

I got an 02 Silverado 2500HD with the 8.1 and Allison transmission. It has over 350,000 miles on it and it still keeps on pulling my trailer with no issues. I get just over 10 mpg with it. When I got it, it had about 150,000 miles on it and I got it for $3000.00 at the time. Well spent money if I say so. Truck is still in real good shape and just now starting to rust on the rockers and cab corners. I told my wife if we get 500,000 miles on it we will rebuild it and keep it longer. It is just to damn reliable for a truck.

The Ford V-10 wasn't just a 5.4 with 2 extra cylinders, it also had a different split pin crankshaft as well

The block is essentially a V8+2 but of course it has split pins, the bank angle is 90 degrees (because it's based on the Triton) and it also has a balance shaft on the bank 2 cam towers too. If Ford cast a 72 degree V block, split pins would not be needed, but then it would not be Triton based either, would it ? And a 90 degree V8 does not have, or need split pins.

@@BrownBomber92181 sounds like a Viper, same layout. It's not bad, but it's not LFA musical, or Carrera GT glorious, but sounds good. I like the sound of I5 engines like the Audi Sport Quattro, or V70R Volvo. Obviously, these are just half-a-V10's .

I ordered a fully loaded V-10 Excursion in 2002. It was not a daily driver, just used for road trips, which we took a lot of, carting kids all over the northeast for their travel sports. It was one of my favorite vehicles I ever owned. In 2008 my kids moved on from travel sports and the Excursion sat in the garage. Gas was about $4 a gallon, I figured it was worth nothing. I sold it in 2009 for $14,000 in perfect condition with 48K miles on it.
