The Vortec V8s were bulletproof until in GM decided to add VVT and cylinder deactivation to it. Trying to add modern VVT technology to a pushrod engine whose basic architecture dates back to the 1950’s wasn’t a good idea. Then you would think they would’ve learned lessons from cylinder deactivation from the Cadillac V864 disaster but nope. What made those engines so reliable was its ancient, simplistic pushrod design. But typical GM, they decided to go for more power and efficiency on the cheap. 15 years later they’re still suffering with lifter failures.

My brother had the BMW for all of eight months. You know how much you have to dislike a vehicle to lose that kind of money on a trade. And he's typically a GM driver so not starting from a high quality standard to begin with.

First year 1998 for the Ranger? Huh? These date back to the early ‘80s. What did I miss in the commentary?

I've always thought taller tires decreased acceleration, but would increase top speed.

tbh I think it's cooler to keep these long lived trucks and cars that you can trust, than to sell them for cheap.

Where are these “dirty cheap Tahoes” located at?? All I see are 20 year old Tahoes with rust going for 6k - 10k

You can't deny fuel injection make cars last longer but my pics would be 22RE , 4 l Jeep engine, anything by Honda and maybe what he's showing here on the thumbnail the 2.3 l Ford ranger motor. And this is factoring in lack of maintenance because people who own these engines are broke mostly just like me. Transmissions are very big factor. All my pics had a manual option which I would pick 100% of the time I have a bunch of honorable mentions that I'll keep to myself.

My neighbour has a BMW M3, not sure of the year, 2008, I think, but it has 384,000 km the last we spoke. He daily drives it into the city for work, which is about 20 km 1 way and most of that is city driving we live 4 km from the city itself. It is 80% garage kept I’m guessing, but 100% garage kept from early fall to late spring. The exterior is close to mint. He has had the front paint corrected to get rid of all the stone chips from winter driving,,, we live in Alberta, Canada. We get huge winds so the province has decided to cover the roads with tiny 1/4 inch pebbles when they “sand” & salt them due to ice. It’s brutal on the paint, of course, as well as the windshield. If you own a Wrangler and a few others, you will likely replace your windshield every other year even if you DON’T get chips or cracks. It will be pitted that bad. The interior is perfect on the M3. He said he has replaced the alternator, clutch assembly twice and a flywheel, and had to rebuild the rear differential. Otherwise it has held up to being a daily driver year round!! He hopes to get to 500,000 km and then he will likely donate it to an auction for Cancer research. He said it will still be pretty mint when he donates it. The routine maintenance is as per BMW specs and nothing was done early as in the oil change happening every 5,000 km (3125 miles) which they push all too hard at even the dealerships here in Canada. It’s a waste of resources & money. I often say, for every unreliable vehicle there are 9 more examples of that model driving around basically problem free. Just no one praises their vehicle for doing what it should, but if it’s a problem, they grumble to everyone they can!! 😂 be careful what you hear on KZbin, or in forums. They are biased based on this premise. The Technicians at almost every manufacturer tend to be jaded (if they are not objective) because all they tend to see are the problem vehicles needing repair. I have nothing against them, it’s just the nature of their jobs. One of my friends is a Toyota Tech and after he bought my lemon 2014 Tundra TRD Off-road at 70,000 miles, he fixed it (main wiring harness had a couple of pinch points causing many troubles) sold it and has now owned 2 x F150s one was a 2017 5.0 FX4 SuperCrew, the other he now has is a 2021 FX4 SuperCrew PowerBoost. He has had no issues beyond recalls on either one. He much prefers the drive ability of the PowerBoost.
