I've got a 62/67mm turbo on it, which is a modded factory holset. It spools like a stock turbo above 1500 rpms and is only a little slower than stock below that. I own a 99 Chevy Suburban with just under 200k. I’d check to see if the intake manifold gasket is leaking coolant on the driver’s side rear. I’d do a complete inspection of the brake lines for corrosion. I’d also run a couple of cans of Seafoam in the tank and one in the intake. Those L31s get a fair amount of crud build up. That fuel injection system has trouble with little poppet ball sticking open or closed. A good thing to do is pull the intake, replace the gaskets, and replace the spider injectors with a replacement system that moves the injectors to the runners. Also replace the cap and rotor. They tend to wear fast. Oh and your bushings on the driver’s door are worn. You can get a replacement kit that has the bushings and new pins for cheap. Get the spring compressor tool for the detent spring. You will never get it back on without the tool, and then the door won’t stay open. I got a spare hood release laying around somewhere.

That whole spark plug issue was way too overrated. All you had to do was make sure they were torqued correctly, and you'd never had an issue. Yes, it sucks checking 10 cylinders, but it's not really that big of a deal. Aside from that issue, those were very solid engines. That Excursion will easily top the mileage of both those GMs in the end, and probably not burn any oil doing so.

Former fleet manager for a tour company. Hated the Econoline minibuses we had, the V10s were 400k Milers. They were very tired, very inefficient, and definitely past their prime. No spark plug tossing in our fleet, but definitely sub 4MPG in hard, 14 hour days of stop and go city traffic. Switched to Transits with the 3.3L free breathing V6, all the drivers loved only having to fill up every other day instead of twice a day, but missed the extra low end grunt the V10s had to get up and go from a stop to 25mph to get around city traffic. The V6 would lazily figure it out eventually. But our fuel and maintenance costs went down and fleet reliability went up.

Those were all really good engines from a mechanical standpoint. I love the simplicity of the good old Chevy small block but I'd prefer to own the 6.0. They make a lot of power and have a more refined fuel injection system. Both Chevys are easy to work on. The Ford is harder to work on but still very solid.

Which means more labor costs when things go wrong. This has always been my biggest concern and annoyance. Its just hard to work under the hood of those excursions.

Gotta love that door sag. It was bad on my '98 Sierra, especially on the passenger door. I got used to slamming the doors hard, so much that I would do it on other people's cars out of habit, much to their dismay.

All you gotta do is keep the hinge pins lubed, and replace the hinge pin bushings when they’re worn. That’s called maintenance, especially on a very heavy door.

Love this series, I live in Loveland Colorado, had a 2003 excursion, 03 Tahoe, blazer, jimmy, el Camino and Cadillac DeVille. Loved them all but my Tahoe was so cheap and easy, sitting on 33's. I think I bought it for 3,000 and put 3000 into it in3 years, I've driven it on every mountain from Estes to south park, you name it. Love it, cheap and easy.

I'd go with the Excursion. It's the one holding up better both in and out and the one with the most capability and roominess. And the one holding up its value the best. It's just insane how good it looks inside for the miles. Fuel economy is atrocious, but which one of these has good FE to begin with? We'd be pulling hairs if choosing any of these over the other ones just for FE.

I’ve actually had a 7.3 diesel F-250, completely base model, roll up windows workhorse truck. Now I drive a GMT800 Yukon Denali, but in between those two I had a 99 GMT400 Sierra, with the 5.7. Funny that I had all three of these platforms back to back, so it’s great seeing them compete

Personal Take on my Favorite of the 3: (1) Tommy's " 'Merican Man' " GMC Suburban - This one his close to home for me, as My Family ONCE Owned a 1997 GMC Suburban in Blue with the Vortec V6 w/ RWD. They bought it 1-2 Years Old Used, and Drove it from 2000 all the way to 2015 when, after about 250K Miles, Constant Transmission and Alternator Issues forced us to send it off. Survived Countless Road Trips and Family Days to various places with Rarely an Issue until it's later Years. Only ever drove it a few times, sometimes Wished we still had it. (2) Nathan's " The Bigger Man " Ford Excursion - GOD I MISS THESE SUVs. V10 or Powerstroke Diesel V8 Engines with Tons of Power, capable of Family Road Trips with just the SUV itself or with a Camper, and when you saw one of these on the Road, YOU KNEW there was a Family Man Driving it. Never Owned One Myself, though I know a Family that has owned one for the Longest Time and LOVED IT. I may not be a fan of the SUV Market today, but the Excursion was one of the exceptions back then! (3) Andre's " The Caddy Man " Cadillac Escalade - Andre, I am throwing a lot of Crap at you for this choice. First Off, the Escalade has a LOT of Negative Tropes / Stereotypes associated with it; They're either purchased by people who can't afford it and/or have no perception of Finances, Criminal / Drug Lords who think they're Eye Candy when they're really a Target, or Hotheads who think they're bigger than their own Britches. You DON'T want to be seen driving this in the Southeastern United States: We HATE this vehicle down here. Most of them you see in the State of Georgia are either Broken Down on the Side of Various Interstates, or in the Junkyard Broken beyond Repair (Some of them with Bullet Holes!). Most of these 'Luxury SUV' Escalades Never even make it to 150K Miles! Once they reach 100K, BAAAAAAAD Things start to happen. I wouldn't even own one if it was GIVEN to Me! STAY AWAY! Nevertheless, Looking forward to seeing who's SUV Reigns Supreme!

I have a 2000 ford excursion 6.8l v10. And it gets 14 city, and 18 highway solidly. Consistanty. I do run premium. 5w30 synthetic chevron oil, at regular changes, self done. with filter change. I prefer motorcraft, but have used fram before. If my mileage got that bad, I would be changing gas. Or figuring out what's wrong with it. Honestly!
