I own a 99 Chevy Suburban with just under 200k. I’d check to see if the intake manifold gasket is leaking coolant on the driver’s side rear. I’d do a complete inspection of the brake lines for corrosion. I’d also run a couple of cans of Seafoam in the tank and one in the intake. Those L31s get a fair amount of crud build up. That fuel injection system has trouble with little poppet ball sticking open or closed. A good thing to do is pull the intake, replace the gaskets, and replace the spider injectors with a replacement system that moves the injectors to the runners. Also replace the cap and rotor. They tend to wear fast. Oh and your bushings on the driver’s door are worn. You can get a replacement kit that has the bushings and new pins for cheap. Get the spring compressor tool for the detent spring. You will never get it back on without the tool, and then the door won’t stay open. I got a spare hood release laying around somewhere.

That Excursion will easily top the mileage of both those GMs in the end, and probably not burn any oil doing so.

Former fleet manager for a tour company. Hated the Econoline minibuses we had, the V10s were 400k Milers. They were very tired, very inefficient, and definitely past their prime. No spark plug tossing in our fleet, but definitely sub 4MPG in hard, 14 hour days of stop and go city traffic. Switched to Transits with the 3.3L free breathing V6, all the drivers loved only having to fill up every other day instead of twice a day, but missed the extra low end grunt the V10s had to get up and go from a stop to 25mph to get around city traffic. The V6 would lazily figure it out eventually. But our fuel and maintenance costs went down and fleet reliability went up.

I have a 2000 excursion with the 7.3. Best SUV ever. 200000 miles and still going strong. Even gets up to 18 mpg on the hwy.

Personal Take on my Favorite of the 3: (1) Tommy's " 'Merican Man' " GMC Suburban - This one his close to home for me, as My Family ONCE Owned a 1997 GMC Suburban in Blue with the Vortec V6 w/ RWD. They bought it 1-2 Years Old Used, and Drove it from 2000 all the way to 2015 when, after about 250K Miles, Constant Transmission and Alternator Issues forced us to send it off. Survived Countless Road Trips and Family Days to various places with Rarely an Issue until it's later Years. Only ever drove it a few times, sometimes Wished we still had it. (2) Nathan's " The Bigger Man " Ford Excursion - GOD I MISS THESE SUVs. V10 or Powerstroke Diesel V8 Engines with Tons of Power, capable of Family Road Trips with just the SUV itself or with a Camper, and when you saw one of these on the Road, YOU KNEW there was a Family Man Driving it. Never Owned One Myself, though I know a Family that has owned one for the Longest Time and LOVED IT. I may not be a fan of the SUV Market today, but the Excursion was one of the exceptions back then! (3) Andre's " The Caddy Man " Cadillac Escalade - Andre, I am throwing a lot of Crap at you for this choice. First Off, the Escalade has a LOT of Negative Tropes / Stereotypes associated with it; They're either purchased by people who can't afford it and/or have no perception of Finances, Criminal / Drug Lords who think they're Eye Candy when they're really a Target, or Hotheads who think they're bigger than their own Britches. You DON'T want to be seen driving this in the Southeastern United States: We HATE this vehicle down here. Most of them you see in the State of Georgia are either Broken Down on the Side of Various Interstates, or in the Junkyard Broken beyond Repair (Some of them with Bullet Holes!). Most of these 'Luxury SUV' Escalades Never even make it to 150K Miles! Once they reach 100K, BAAAAAAAD Things start to happen. I wouldn't even own one if it was GIVEN to Me! STAY AWAY! Nevertheless, Looking forward to seeing who's SUV Reigns Supreme!

I love these "buy-tune-ride" episodes. Not only because american SUV and trucks are so great, but also because of you, guys! Greetings from Slovakia.

I have a 2000 ford excursion 6.8l v10. And it gets 14 city, and 18 highway solidly. Consistanty. I do run premium. 5w30 synthetic chevron oil, at regular changes, self done. with filter change. I prefer motorcraft, but have used fram before. If my mileage got that bad, I would be changing gas. Or figuring out what's wrong with it. Honestly!

I dont know if it was a size restriction but you could get a 100 series landcruiser for that budget and thats a no brainer in my opinion Otherwise excursion for the win V10 is an awesome engine even if thirsty
