Hi folks, that's my Supra in the video. What a fun day at the drag strip! We knew these cars would be close, we just didn't know how close. But that's the fun of showing how good modern cars have gotten compared to the classics. I've done two major modifications to the Supra: an HKS Hi-Power exhaust for a little more sound and KW V3 suspension to replace an aging stock suspension. Otherwise, all stock. The automatic transmission doesn't serve the Mk4 well, you're either full throttle to get the most out of it or it shifts at times that don't do the car any favors. I'll do something with the transmission eventually, just not sure what yet. Thanks for watching!
@justme30713 күн бұрын
Leave the the transmission alone. It's probably the main reason the car hasn't been modified to within an inch of its life. It's a grand touring cruiser anyways. Too many cars today, like the GR Corolla, can whip it. Just be glad you found a pristine example and enjoy the car for what it is. That's my opinion, anyways.

You seem like a true Supra guy! You mentioned maybe going 6-speed route. The only downside is the insane cost of getting a V160 transmission. Many automatic owners are doing modern ZF 8HP swap. For example whizbits sell kits to easily do a modern 8 speed automatic swap. The 8HP transmission totally transforms the Supra!
@jimmy-buffett12 күн бұрын
@@electrikoptik I've been watching the ZF 8-speed swap videos, and am very interested. The miles on my car (155K) reduce the impact of doing something unique. The wheelbase on a Mk4 is slightly smaller than a GR86 (100" vs 101") and the overall dimensions match that of a C4 Corvette. So it's really a 2+2 shoved into the space of an American 2 seater sports car. I think they are so rare that people have rarely, if ever, seen one up close in person, so people get the impression that they were big cars. But park one next to a modern (or 90s!) Camaro and you'll get an idea of just how small the Mk4 really is, the 6th gen Camaro has nearly a foot longer wheelbase and overall length, and is noticeably taller and wider.

That would be easy. Nissan reliably gets 300hp out of their 3.5. Add a little compression and timing and it'll do 300 all day
@siraff44619 күн бұрын
Depends what you want from it. If it needs to meet emissions and warranty reliability levels then it would probably be in the low-mid 300's at best. It was always designed as a turbocharged engine so its not great when n/a tuned. Modern turbos and so on would see it into the late 300's but much after that and you would start running into cooling issues for prolonged use with modern emissions devices. If it was a case of 90's emission levels but modern tech probably into the 450+ range and if emissions just didn't matter 500+. If they didn't care about emissions or warranty north of 700 but again it gets to the stage where cooling (oil, intake and coolant) is the limiting factor for prolonged use. Thats why their endurance racers had the smaller 4-pot from the Celica and ran around 480hp - the lighter engine was also easier to package with the cooling equipment required. Look up the Castrol or Tom's Supras if you want to learn about them - they are pretty cool cars.

The J engine from Toyota is a diesel. This is the JZ engine. Big details....The 2-way turbocharger system Toyota works in a manner that is kind of complicated, leaving all the vacuum lines and controls you see under hood. The six cylinders feed the first turbine. Ad the rpm climbs, exhaust gas is bled into the second turbine to bring it online. Most can feel when they are both chugging along. And that is what happens. They are not sequential (first then second), it uses one, then both.

While I fully get where the Supra’s owner is coming from I would have to make improvements anywhere I could in the same way he did the exhaust. So I would probably go with slightly wider rims and tires, upgrade to the 6 speed stick, upgrade some of the suspension components like bushing, shocks, springs, etc., better air intake, MAYBE a boost controller…. Essentially, I’d keep it mostly stock, but improve the things I could without major changes to the overall infrastructure of the car. Make it perform better across the board in a way that could be reversed in a day or two. And considering just how much they are known to respond to upgrades, I suspect you’d enjoy significant “seat of your pants” improvements without spending a fortune or damaging the car.

Two very important points to note. 1) two years after the Supra came out it was determined that 100-200hp is all that could be gained on the factory Supra twin turbo motor, AND 2 years after the GR Corolla came out it was determined the same 100-200hp is all that could be gained on the factory GR Corolla Engine. Aftermarket develop takes time and isn't always an exact science until those that prove themselves come out of the woodwork with results. The Supra became shockingly modifiable when the right people suddenly came out with their results. Same thing with all the legendary motors, like the Mitsu 4G63, and the Honda/Acura kseries, and the current Supra, and the current GR Corolla. Next point 2) The 4th gen Supra was underrated, about 30hp. That specific car likely has 5-10hp more due to the exhaust and better&lighter modern tires. There was also a free mod where you bled/pinched off some of the pressure on the wastegate line and gained power, which this car likely has being as old as it is. The auto supra also weighs 200 lbs more than the auto GR Corolla. This proves it's not an apples to apples comparison, and unless you went back in time with a new GR Corolla, you're never going to get the true comparison... sufficeth to say that the GR Corolla is likely quicker in every respect.

I don't think they were doing a straight comparison, but seeing how they would do, the GR is quicker

Love how kids think the 4th gen Supra is legend. The 4th gen had the worst sales of the Supra. Was the car that killed off the Supra at the time. Was expensive was considered fat and soft. The 2nd and 3rd gen Supra was way more loved at the time. Because used.ones were available and 3000 Mitsubishi was too much money for the budget F&F used a 4th gen in the movie then every millenial kid loved them. That said 4 gen Supra too anyone who was there in the 90's hated these cars and without F&F would have stayed unloved because still is soft and still looks fat.

The new front desing of the GR corolla only looks decent in the grey color. But the front design of the last model year still looks better.

I still want a turbo MK4 Supra regardless of transmission. But prices are too insane. I’ll get a Toyota JDM Soarer. Same car, just more weight.

Great vid. Can we get a 700 hp New edge Cobra vs a new gen gt500 ?

Do this race with a manual, stock Supra and it would have been lights out for the GR.

The Supra hype is real. Nothing wrong with a nearly 30 year old car losing a race to a modern compact starter car.

I've hear so much talk and how amazing the classic supra is........and although it really is a great looking car the stock performance of these cars is really underwhelming. But with a tune and a big single turbo they are super car killers!!!

I hate to tell you but both turbos are exactly the same size, it's a sequential turbo setup not compound turbo setup

The Supra is beautiful and classic (now, lol). Yet the new GR is just so much better, it can be a daily and it has 4 doors and driven in the winter.

Haven't even watched the whole video but any 'car person' will take the supra HANDS DOWN no matter what the outcome is!

Don't drive the Corolla over 85MPH or it'll catch on fire

Now we need this but with both manual cars , mayne throw in a a91 aswell to slap the b58 in there to .. would be a cool comparison, and im just a butthurt for a standard trans .. i hate autos lol , its disconnecting imo , you lose so much of your road to driver connection.. but still cool content guys .. peace and love all, keep it rad, stay safe, and build on.. ps i wish we got the GR yaris in the USA, now that would be a rad comparison, plus juat a rad ride imo .. anyways 💪🏽🤘🏽🤙🏽✌🏽

I'm sorry guys. You can make the Corolla go 500mph, but it will always be 5 door family hatchback. The Supra will ALWAYS be an icon.

2 issues with comparison. What's the weight difference? If the boost restrictor wasn't removed, the supra doesn't have 320hp

The 30-year-old Supra design still looks fantastic. I couldn't care less that the Corolla hatchback is quicker to 100mph by a hair. The pokiness off the line is a bigger deal in day-to-day driving. At the end of the day, it's just a Corolla hatchback economy car with go-fast bits. It's not the flagship sports car like the Supra.

the point is to compare how they do, that's like saying the Camry TRD is just a sedan, that's not the point

JZA80 Supra turbos are of equal size. They are Hitachi US spec has steel blades as opposed to the rest of the world who had weaker ceramic. US spec car also had more power from factory. Old mate should add an intercooler and boost controller.
