Hi folks, that's my Supra in the video. What a fun day at the drag strip! We knew these cars would be close, we just didn't know how close. But that's the fun of showing how good modern cars have gotten compared to the classics. I've done two major modifications to the Supra: an HKS Hi-Power exhaust for a little more sound and KW V3 suspension to replace an aging stock suspension. Otherwise, all stock. The automatic transmission doesn't serve the Mk4 well, you're either full throttle to get the most out of it or it shifts at times that don't do the car any favors. I'll do something with the transmission eventually, just not sure what yet. Thanks for watching!
@justme307Ай бұрын
Leave the the transmission alone. It's probably the main reason the car hasn't been modified to within an inch of its life. It's a grand touring cruiser anyways. Too many cars today, like the GR Corolla, can whip it. Just be glad you found a pristine example and enjoy the car for what it is. That's my opinion, anyways.

You seem like a true Supra guy! You mentioned maybe going 6-speed route. The only downside is the insane cost of getting a V160 transmission. Many automatic owners are doing modern ZF 8HP swap. The wheelbase on a Mk4 is slightly smaller than a GR86 (100" vs 101") and the overall dimensions match that of a C4 Corvette. So it's really a 2+2 shoved into the space of an American 2 seater sports car. I think they are so rare that people have rarely, if ever, seen one up close in person, so people get the impression that they were big cars. But park one next to a modern (or 90s!) Camaro and you'll get an idea of just how small the Mk4 really is, the 6th gen Camaro has nearly a foot longer wheelbase and overall length, and is noticeably taller and wider.

@malrofoАй бұрын
That would be easy. Nissan reliably gets 300hp out of their 3.5. Add a little compression and timing and it'll do 300 all day
@siraff4461Ай бұрын
Depends what you want from it. If it needs to meet emissions and warranty reliability levels then it would probably be in the low-mid 300's at best. It was always designed as a turbocharged engine so its not great when n/a tuned. Modern turbos and so on would see it into the late 300's but much after that and you would start running into cooling issues for prolonged use with modern emissions devices. If it was a case of 90's emission levels but modern tech probably into the 450+ range and if emissions just didn't matter 500+. If they didn't care about emissions or warranty north of 700 but again it gets to the stage where cooling (oil, intake and coolant) is the limiting factor for prolonged use. Thats why their endurance racers had the smaller 4-pot from the Celica and ran around 480hp - the lighter engine was also easier to package with the cooling equipment required. Look up the Castrol or Tom's Supras if you want to learn about them - they are pretty cool cars.

So I would probably go with slightly wider rims and tires, upgrade to the 6 speed stick, upgrade some of the suspension components like bushing, shocks, springs, etc., better air intake, MAYBE a boost controller…. Essentially, I’d keep it mostly stock, but improve the things I could without major changes to the overall infrastructure of the car. Make it perform better across the board in a way that could be reversed in a day or two. And considering just how much they are known to respond to upgrades, I suspect you’d enjoy significant “seat of your pants” improvements without spending a fortune or damaging the car.

The J engine from Toyota is a diesel. This is the JZ engine. Big details....The 2-way turbocharger system Toyota works in a manner that is kind of complicated, leaving all the vacuum lines and controls you see under hood. The six cylinders feed the first turbine. Ad the rpm climbs, exhaust gas is bled into the second turbine to bring it online. Most can feel when they are both chugging along. And that is what happens. They are not sequential (first then second), it uses one, then both.
@georgelugenalt200Ай бұрын
ok so, altitude should not affect a turbocharged engine unless the peak boost is very low, or the manifold pressure is capped by boost not actual manifold pressure. The turbo will just compress more air and compensate for the lower outside air pressure at any reasonable altitude below 10,000 feet at least.

Ironically, the manual and auto were "exactly" the same in stock trim. ( I have owned both and lined them up several times for comparison) The four speed auto matches up perfectly with the six speed manual gear for gear . There is a button under the accelerator pedal that will take the car to Red line in each gear and will drop down the trans to the lowest gear if roll racing. This would have helped on the launch and roll racing but most don't know about it. Not to discredit the three cylinder engine at all because it is incredibly, but technology had increased drastically over 20 plus years.😊

Basically bolt ons and tune would make it faster

I always thought of the supra as larg for a sports car . And the corrola small. The corrola looks like a giant next to the supra

The GR is practically a tuned car. Tune the Supra, no competition.

Tuned from factory for both, don't forget

I didn't know that the turbo Supra came with a auto gear box. I thought only the non turbos did.

Yeah it’s not fun with the 4spd auto. I knew someone who had one and having driven one with a Getrag 6 it was meh. Many JDM imports are auto too 😓

The Supra is beautiful and classic (now, lol). Yet the new GR is just so much better, it can be a daily and it has 4 doors and driven in the winter.

The great thing about that Supra is its ability to be modified and reliably handle the extra power. Something very few have been proven to handle.

Any engine can be built to handle high horsepower reliably

The small 4 cylinder won’t last if it’s flogged.

it's only 3 cylinders

Tommy - “The one thing about the Supra is the manual transmission is a little dim witted.” Okay, maybe when you’re driving, Tommy. ;)
@mastercricket7626Ай бұрын
Now we need this but with both manual cars , mayne throw in a a91 aswell to slap the b58 in there to .. would be a cool comparison, and im just a butthurt for a standard trans .. i hate autos lol , its disconnecting imo , you lose so much of your road to driver connection.. but still cool content guys .. peace and love all, keep it rad, stay safe, and build on.. ps i wish we got the GR yaris in the USA, now that would be a rad comparison, plus juat a rad ride imo .. anyways 💪🏽🤘🏽🤙🏽✌🏽

JZA80 Supra turbos are of equal size. They are Hitachi US spec has steel blades as opposed to the rest of the world who had weaker ceramic. US spec car also had more power from factory. Old mate should add an intercooler and boost controller.
