@@SLArmstrong The vehicles are tracking and timing other things in the road. I have taken hundreds of rides in SF and watched the Waymo Driver respond to humans stepping in the road and stepping back onto the sidewalk, not to mention how well it reads other vehicles!

One thing I noticed, you have no idea what you are talking about. Tesla FSD Beta could drive this same route just as confidently, and probably faster because the Tesla can make unprotected lefts while Waymo can only turn right unless it has traffic lights. Tesla FSD Beta still makes some errors, but the testers are intentionally throwing the hardest challenges they have at it, and Waymo is intentionally being limited to the easiest to drive in areas of the cities they are in.

@@tribalypredisposed Tesla FSD City Streets is not designed to be autonomous. It is designed, both in beta form and for its final release, to operate with a human driver monitoring and ready to take over. I know there's a lot of confusion over this, and I know that Elon has led customers to believe that their vehicles are headed for Level 4 operation in the future. But Tesla has told regulators a different story, and we have several major clues that tell us the version shared with regulators is the true story. First, by definition, Level 4 is geofenced. When Elon originally promised Tesla buyers that their cars would drive themselves anywhere, he claimed that the cars would be Level 5, meaning they could drive anywhere a human could under the same conditions. Years later, he backed off that promise, instead saying the cars would reach Level 4. But what he didn't really highlight was what Level 4 meant. Level 4 essentially means two things: 1. The company will decide when and where vehicles can safely operate. 2. The company will have humans nearby to step in and handle situations the vehicles can not. Sometimes they can help remotely. Other times they will need to be there physically. Many testers who show FSD Beta in their videos talk about things like the streets of New York being "the ultimate test" of FSD. They're wrong. The real challenges for self-driving cars come in the form of special events, such as when your car gets hit by another driver, or an accident happens ahead of you on a highway, forcing you to stop and drive through the median to turn around. These are situations that occur rarely but which robotaxis must have some plan to deal with. The takeaway here is that until software is literally as smart as a human, we're going to encounter situations that humans will be needed. And that means that Level 4 services will appear regionally in geofenced settings where humans can plan their operation and be ready to assist. Another major clue Tesla has given, aside from telling customers that FSD is Level 2, is the introduction of Hardware 4.0. Tesla is installing new cameras with higher resolutions and new positions, adding high definition radar, and increasing CPU power to allow for computer redundancy to its new vehicles. And they're telling their current customers that this hardware will not be available in their older vehicles. In short, what Tesla is saying is that it believes this better hardware is actually required for autonomous driving. Companies don't add hardware costs for themselves for no good reason. And this action should be a good clue to the hundreds of thousands of people who have paid for FSD that their cars will never fulfill the robotaxi dream that Elon hyped up. If and when Tesla truly starts building robotaxis, it will be with different hardware, and it will be offered one region at a time, just as we see other robotaxi companies already doing. Level 3 and Level 4 are distinguished from Level 2 in that they are the first levels that offer true autonomy. With Level 3, the promise is that the vehicle can drive itself completely in some situations, with no driver monitoring, provided the driver is in the car and can respond when alerted by the vehicle. While FSD will alert drivers to a few situations it can't handle, it is by no means designed to do this for all situations it can't handle. And the fact that we have not seen Tesla expanding the situations it alerts drivers to is further evidence that Tesla is not pursuing anything beyond Level 2 with FSD City Streets. You can find Tesla's statement to California regulators, assuring them that FSD City Streets, in its final release form, will remain Level 2.

@@communityband1 there is no "FSD City Streets," there is FSD. Level 5 autonomous is the goal. Yes, I believe HW4 and the new camera and radar suite will be required to reach level 5, and I said that back in 2018 when they were working on HW3 release and said HW4 would follow. There will never be any kind of geo-fencing for Tesla cars, but they are not going to be taking you off roading or on some highly irregular or barely detectable roads like exist in Mexico or the rest of the Third world. Tesla level 5 FSD will however be fully capable on actual roads of allowing the humans to sleep or watch a movie while it takes them where they want to go. I believe we are just a couple years away from that.

@@tribalypredisposed No, you're mistaken. FSD is the umbrella term for the full set of features which includes advanced features like AutoPilot, Smart Summon, City Streets and so on. And no, Level 5 is _not_ Tesla's goal. Elon has changed his wording to focus on Level 4. To solve Level 5, you realistically are going to have to solve artificial general intelligence. And I see no good reason to believe that a company working on autonomous vehicles will be the first to get there. If you get a car that's smart enough to handle any vehicle situation in the world a human can, it's also going to be able to handle pretty much anything else humans do as well. If you want to know who has the best chance of solving Level 5 autonomy, take your eyes off the self-driving car industry and start looking at AI research companies. We don't know yet whether Level 5 will ever happen. But if it does, think decades, not 2 years. And you should very much expect that if Tesla pursues robotaxis, as they've been talking about, geofencing will be a part of that deal. It won't be with customer vehicles.

For those wondering on price right now. The trip he took was 3.9 miles and it cost him $17.09. That comes out to $4.38 a mile. I think this is really interesting technology, but for right now, it is in a more gimmicky state. It’s fun for the occasional ride, but until prices go down I don’t think it can be used everywhere.

My point is, for now, driverless cars are more expensive, and as such more gimmicky, than a regular Uber and other ride sharing services. Though I really am excited to see this technology get to the point of it being cheaper than owning a car.

I like the fact that you brought up a strong disadvantage to those cars being very inclimate weather. Especially here in northern Canada where the weather can change every 2 - 5 minutes on a bad day. I can see them adopting some other type of military tech or just refining it better for foggy days or very rainy days like the pacific northwest has. It is a spinning lidar with a 360-degree field of view and a range of up to 300 meters. The lidar system is designed to be robust and operate in a variety of conditions, including rain, fog, and snow.

@@manp1039 Then let's see them offer winter service in Chicago or Minneapolis. You don't notice how dry and warm all of Waymo's, and Cruise's, demo cities are? There is a YT video of a Waymo driving in the rain in SF. It was doing fine until it tried to drive over a large tree branch in the road, became immobilized, and human help had to be summoned. But all of this is minutiae. Their LIDAR and all the rest cost a lot of money, and costs a lot of electricity to power, and both of those add up to a FSD solution that simply cannot compete economically with Tesla, and cannot scale to compete with Tesla either. Would you summon a robo taxi that costs three times as much from a company with a fleet three orders of magnitude smaller? No. It doesn't matter if Waymo makes it work everywhere, it doesn't matter if they are first to level 5, what matters is Tesla can make millions of robo taxis a year and provide them way below the cost of a Waymo.

Earlier in my hundreds of rides, the Waymo Driver was more cautious. It IS growing more assertive and I love it. For example at a stop, it will wait, but if someone doesn't go when it is their turn, it will proceed to keep traffic moving. It is a great balance. I am sure I caught some of this in my footage. "...wonder what will happen on a really busy street...", well that's why this waymo ride chose the side streets & avoided the highway cuz the engineers know that the system has high probability of failure if it chose the highway, as decisions need to made quickly & any driving errors can lead to serious accidents at highway speeds, versus mild to almost no risk of accidents on side streets with less traffic. That literally proves how incompetent this technology currently is, that it can't even confidently drive on a highway on a clear sunny day, imagine tryna use a self-driving car on a busy street in LA during rush hour. Good luck. LOL

I live inside the Phoenix/Tempe zone where Waymo 1 operates. Those Jaguar I-Pace rigs are everywhere and almost all of them have a driver, I think to keep making better and better mapping of the area so that that ride can be as smooth as it was in this video. It still seems like a lot of overhead but of course as more vehicles have those sensors actual rides can do the mapping at the same time. Tesla uses the data from their drivers to accomplish this for their system. Waymo doesn't have that luxury so they send their drivers out to do the mapping, and I'm sure 1 Waymo trip collects much better data than 1 Tesla given all the extra mapping sensors on that vehicle

Interestingly this week was the first time I encountered a Waymo without an engineer up front to monitor it in downtown Phoenix. I live in Tempe though and have seen a lot of Waymos with engineers recently, so I wonder if they are currently mapping Tempe and Scottsdale next.

I like it. I’d use one of these if available, at least in good weather. The car drives itself in a refined manner - smooth and confident. It’s actually the best I’ve seen one of these things perform. Better than Tesla’s FSD by a good margin from what can be gleaned from this short ride, but that is an apples-oranges comparison. Funny as hell when the car drove right by Andre, and when he caught up with it, it wouldn’t let him in! I’m surprised that Waymo is using such small cars for taxis. Andre looked cramped, even though he said the space was sufficient. (Andre looks much more at-home in a full-sized pickup.) The Pacifica would have been a better choice. Great video. I’d like to see TFL do a self-driving series to compare the different platforms , and perhaps repeat series every year or so to monitor progress. One thing I like over Uber - I wouldn’t feel the need to tip !

I have a lot of clips from Waymo rides around SF. I have been in bumper-to-bumper traffic many times, but don't usually film it, but in the city we are always encountering double parked cars, cars backing out, people stuck waiting to turn... We move carefully, get to the right lane early, have no rage, and always use a turn signal!

Random thoughts. Seeing how nonchalantly the tech was with the dark colored trash bag....what if a manhole cover was missing? Does it ask for a tip? Would it drive through Camden...in the middle of the night? Is there a get me outta here mode? If I use it for a bank heist and getaway car, who gets busted as my accomplice?

It's really cool. It might be a while before we get this service over here in the UK but it's surely just a matter of time. We've just got driverless buses and trains here at the moment. One thing I would like is to be allowed in the 'drivers' seat of a driverless car, because, call it psychological if you like but I would feel like if something did go wrong ( extremely unlikely I know) I could quickly take over but in the backseat, it would be more difficult to get there in time, especially when buckled up and I presume that there is some sort of manuel override, even if it was maybe just a question of turning the wheel to get the vehicle out of some potential danger it might have gotten itself into. Just a thought. Thanks.
