Cost to value is the real reason some states are trying to ban these. Its not about safety, its about propping up the big 3 and forcing people to pay ridiculous prices. These small trucks defiantly have a use case. Let the people decide.

I have interviewed several Kei Truck owners of various manufacturers, and the appeal of the mini truck is it's utility and conservation of size. 90 percent of the time Truck owners are using their trucks as cars and wasting all of that size and gas. Using the Kei Truck for deliveries in cities and most jobs on farms and job sites would be a huge cost benefit. Further, using Trucks on the Kei platform allows for greater storage and maneuverability. We swapped out most of the F150s for Mules. Kei trucks are a better solution than going Electric and offer foul weather protection that the Mules didn't, plus they are cheaper and cute too.

This is exactly why I bought mine. I have a full size truck, but I am not banging it around in my woods. A side by side is priced out of my budget. My Diahatsu HiJet can do more work than a side by side, but isn't as good off road. A mini truck fit my need for my property and use.

I own the Diahatsu HiJet version of these trucks. It has the low range and locking rear differential which makes it even more capable for off road use. I put on a 2 inch lift kit, progressive front springs, and slightly larger tires which helps greatly with clearance. I also have gone to the wrong side to get in more times than I can count. The other challenge is when I turn on the wipers when intending to put on the turning signal. LOL! It is a great little truck for the right applications. I use mine on my 40 acres of forest and for plowing the driveway (I put a plow on the front using a 2 inch front receiver).

I was stationed in Japan for two years. Had a 1992 Honda Prelude Si 5-spd the 2nd year I was there. I was confused why the wiper and turn signal stalks were reversed for seemingly no good reason. Then it struck me one day. The turn signal stalk can be used by the hand that doesn't operate the shifter. The thought is that you are more likely to need to use the turn signals while shifting than the wipers. If you need to shift and change the wiper setting, well the wipers can wait until you are done shifting. If you need to shift and use the turn signal you may need to do both at the same time. Other easy way to remember is wipers inside and turn signals outside. Hope it helps. Also the first month I was driving in Japan every time I was turning through an intersection I said to myself in my head "on the left, on the left, on the left" until I was through the intersection.

It would be great for replacing a UTV on a farm, but it wouldnt be able to tow a trailer full of hay or a tractor. It also couldn't replace a truck for people who use them for hobbies such as fishing or hunting. It wouldn't be good for towing my 22ft boat down the interstate. Although I am thinking about getting one to drive around the hunting camp as a UTV replacement. Edit: just saw your above comment saying there is an acty sized hole and I 100% agree. When you put an American truck and a light truck side by side, you can't help but laugh at the difference in size. As many people have commented, light trucks are trucks made for Japanese farmers. If you are helping farmers on American farms, you must be happy.

The Honda is so useful and well thought out. The height of the truck to load and unload, the pickup bed sides lowering, all wheel drive. I have zero interest in lifting things in and out of a bed that is shoulder high all day long. I looked at houses in the 90's that were selling for 125k. I am talking new built homes on half to 1 acre lots.

Little kei trucks are underated. Heated cab 4wd, and some with hi and low range with a rear locker option also. Also with hydraulic dump beds too all for less than a side x side and way better built. These are comercial duty in Japan.

You both seemed amazed by the versatility of the “drop gates”, making the Honda into a flat bed. Volkswagen had that with the Transporter pickup and double cab way back in the 1950s… there must be a nice, rust free split window from the mid 60s in Colorado that you could do a segment on.

One extra feature they seem to have missed is that you can remove those drop gates from the Acty, just need to unscrew the stopper then the gates just slide out.

I was also suprised by they ... Suprise finding that out. In Europe we have Toyota Dynas that in this video at least, would be a middle ground between the Honda and the Ford and as far as I know, every truck in that category has side drop Gates. I don't know much about these vehicles though.

These Japanese trucks are a joy to use. They're simple, effective, mostly worry free, easy to drive, fit in small places to drive and are not complicated. It's almost funny (almost) how almost all the rest of the world gets along just fine with these while Americans purposely buy, for horrible amounts of money, these monsters that consume, take up space, cost too much to buy, insure, repair, AND FEED but do it anyway and they usually only have one person in them and they do no work. Says a lot about American society.

All kinds of options, different size truck beds, dual rears, more HP, etc. gas and diesel options, dumping beds, dual cabs, auto and manual trans. options, bigger engines, much faster, same fold down sides, tailgate, and more options. This is areal work truck!

Trucks have now just become too much on all levels. This F350, proves the point, and in reality people just don’t need it unless it’s for bragging rights. I just see to a lot of wasted cash that you will never get back. If I owed a farm, I would own that Honda and a tractor. That little truck does everything that u need to do and so easy to load. I saw one the other day at my HD store. Guy was picking up plywood and fencing. That truck has so much usage and it makes sense. The older I get, the more I see how much people go in debt for the “look”. I’m looking for the function, I can care less about the “look”.

I'm with every one here that honda accty is actually very useful especially stuff the work site, farm site and every where else you have a right nanuvering area. With the trusting Cody of utv's going over 20k-50k and trucks hitting 70k for a decent model new, having something like this that costs 5k is a steal especially since David already said what we were thinking . Id buy this for a work site , cheap, easy to maintain not going to kill you on gas and is not going to murder your bank account either! Id love to see if Dave can put a small lift on it and some all terrain tires

Or you can have some of the small trucks we have here in Asia. Same philosophy as the kei trucks, but larger and stronger, just large and strong enough to carry 2-4x more, but still much smaller than every other pickup on sale in the US so far I'll bet, and has enough power for better road use with a 1.0L to 1.6L engines (and if you need it, some has diesel engines), and only costs a little bit more than a 660cc kei truck.

That Honda makes me wonder how the Honda Ridgeline would do out there doing the same tasks. I think the bed is a little smaller but would still fit the bale of hay and it has a lot more payload. Maybe if y’all can get one take it out there

The main strike against the Ridgeline is the wheel base. Half of your payload potentially is hanging behind the rear wheels, with the Acty the rear wheels are almost to the back of the bed

I love these kind of videos showing the various vehicles that working on the yak farm. As a person who has access to a bunch of property that we sometimes get firewood or bring people out to view the nature. My in laws have an older Kubota UTV that has been great for this but it’s not great for the cold or if you need to really load the bed. I have been looking at these Hondas, Suzukis or even the HiJets for this use not to mention to go places my F150 won’t fit. Unfortunately most of these models are going up in price here in the foothills of the Adirondacks. A local Honda is asking for 8-10K and is the same year condition as yours. I keep my eyes peeled for a user.

Modern trucks are just so big for bigness sake that it gets kind of comical. I'd much rather have that little truck with some better offroad tires for a farm. Small, light-weight, easy on gas, big enough for a bale of hay (which is all the big truck could fit), and a low-gear 4x4 billy goat mode sounds like a great work truck. Certainly a fine daily drive for the farm until you need something bigger. Reminds me of when trucks were meant to work before Dodge started the bigness wars in the late 90s. Maybe a good follow up video would be what can you do for $1000 to upgrade the mini truck? New tires, some sort of short lift, etc.

We run a Daihatsu Hijet KEI truck on our farm instead of a side-by-side. It is far more versatile and actually more economical on fuel. Ours has the hydraulic dump bed which is incredibly useful. The Hijet has on demand 4WD, dual range and a rear locking diff, we added a 2" lift so we can run 22" ATV tyres in winter, rears are 11" wide. The real advantage is in it's incredibly low centre of gravity. We can cross a 45º side slope, then climb up and down it. Truely the most useful vehicle we run and the one that makes everyone grin. It constantly surprises with it's capability, so we call it "the little truck that can."

Even with the oversize wheels. I live in PH and have a half cap on the back with jump bench seats on both sides for 2 more passengers on each side. I have yet to see one in the states with the half cap. I have owned F150's a 2500 dodge and a 1 ton duel wheel chevy. For the price and what the little Suzuki is i am very impressed.
