Tacoma would be a good choice if only it was around 6-7K cheaper than the market price. For about 45-50K, you can get a legit V8 full size that gets the same fuel economy and way more features.

@@Jay-bw3fl definitely not a performance vehicle. But where I live there are a lot of laborers. They just need to haul a couple hundred lbs around or equipment. Maybe 1000lb at the most. And they need a truck that will have low cost to own and for a long time. The Tacoma is the most popular for that by a long shot.

In 2018 I wanted a new Tacoma. But after driving it, the lack of power was just too severe. A Tundra had good power, but the gas mileage was unacceptable. I ended up with a F150 4x4 5.0 V8. It has amazing power, and gets almost the same gas mileage as the Tacoma. Averaging 20mpg. I am still a Toyota fan, but not every time they go to bat produces a home run.

I haven't driven a 5.0 F-150 but it sounds like a good compromise on power and mpgs compared to the 4.6 and 5.4 it replaced. I do have the first gen 5.0 DOHC Coyote in my Mustang and still impressed with the power and performance from the factory.
@crewdawg2008
@crewdawg2008 10 ай бұрын
The coyote isn't a compromise. It's superior to both the 4.6 and 5.4 by every metric. Power, torque, mpg, reliability. Ford took all the lessons they learned from the 4.6 and 5.4 and put the best of everything into developing the coyote. 1st and 2nd gen Coyotes especially. Rumor has it the newer Coyotes have oil consumption issues, I can't speak to that with any experience, however. I went from an 06 F150 5.4 to a 13 5.0, so 1st gen Coyotes are all I've dealt with to compare, with experience, but I never hear anything bad about the 2nd gens either.

Tuned my 19 tacoma and it runs great now. Also it's not the engine it's the transmission since the same 3.5 is in Lexus making more power. Tuning it drastically improves it over the shit tuning from the factory. The throttle response was horrible as well before tuning.

I had a 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 with the baby Duramax 4 cylinder diesel. It was very slow. It was a little torque monster but had very little power above 2500 rpm. It had the 6 speed automatic and the problem was that it seemed like GM had someone programming the shift points that wasn't familiar with the power curve that engine produced. I ended up getting a custom tune that altered shift points so it would upshift much quicker to take advantage of that wave of torque and it was much more fun to drive.

Great video guys! I recently got rid of my Maverick, not for a drive train issue, but I found something a little annoying in the drivetrain that I thought I would share. My Maverick had the Ecoboost, AWD, Tow pkg with the 8 speed conventional automatic transmission. I towed a 3000 lb trailer with it thru the mountains in Colorado and found that the engine had plenty of power for that job - no complaints at all regarding power. I did find a bit of a quirk with the automatic transmission and the turbo-engine - the transmission would constantly try to upshift to improve mileage, but the engine needed to build revs before it developed much power. When I needed more power, the transmission would downshift, then there would be a delay as the turbo pooled up, then a rush of power, then the transmission would very quickly upshift again, the turbo would spool down, the truck would slow, and then the whole cycle would start all over again. It made trying to drive smoothly very difficult - the engine and transmission seemed to be a cross purposes: engine wants high revs, transmission wants low revs, so there were lots of jerks with the drivetrain speeding up and slowing down. There was an 'L' button on the shifter, which would tell the transmission to try to stay in a lower gear, but you couldn't choose which gear, or even see which gear the transmission chose, so you still had little control over the transmission. I liked the engine, and the transmission worked well, it just didn't seem like they were well suited to each other.

It lasts the most if you use it a lot of years. It costs less to maintain. You have less chance to get stranded on the road if you drive it. It has the best looks (subj), it actually doesn't drive that bad (is not insufferable). I enjoyed this episode hearing about the different engine offerings and your reviews. I bought a slightly used 2018 Silverado LT 5.3 Direct injection with the 6 speed auto trans. in Jan. of 2020. Only had 15k on the odometer. Coming from a 2005 Avalanche 5.3 with 4 speed automatic I owned for 15 years and 135K I was impressed with the 2018 engine's 355 HP and torque but the transmission performance has be a bit disappointing. In all fairness the strange shifting and unsmooth engine power to the road at times could also be due in part to the AFM 4 cylinder/ 8 cylinder mode switching and the way the computer controls the torque converter lock outs starting in very low gear ranges. The truck is presently at an transmission shop in my area for a fluid and filter service on the transmission. I have 42K on the truck now. While there it will also receive a custom tune to prevent AFM 4 cylinder mode operation and to limit the TC lock ups to only occur above 45 MPH. I am hoping this will increase my satisfaction with this engine and trans combo and hopefully eliminate the premature failure of the TC from over activation of the lock outs the factory programing causes. When the TCs fail they often take out the 6 speed transmission sending metal fragments through these transmission. This one transmission shop had 9 of these 6 speed transmissions on the work benches full of metal fragments waiting on new parts for their rebuilds. By having the truck reprogramed (tuned) to disable the AFM it will hopefully eliminate the jerking sensation caused by switching between 4 cylinder and 8 cylinder engine modes and hopefully prevent the lifter failure the system is commonly known to cause in these 5.3L V8 engines. That is my hope anyway. Other than these issues I love my truck and I do hope the results prove worth taking these remedies.

The power train is actually genius. People just dont understand why it is how it is. If you look at the total revolutions per minute this engine runs it hardly ever works at anything. It's always looking for the lowest gear. Drives around at 1100 rpm. When you need to tow, yeah It'll rev. But most people don't tow daily. And at 1100 rpm it'll cruise along without effort for years. The motor has zero stress.
@atodaso1668
@atodaso1668 11 ай бұрын
But how does it feel when you press the pedal, how far do you have to push said pedal to get the desired response? There is more to an engine than fuel economy and it's not even good at that. It barely averages more than my old tundra with the 4.7 V8 at probably half the perceived power level. @@itsallminor6133

It’s amazing how people forget that the Tacoma 3.5 is a Atkinson cycle engine!! Off the line. It feels like an old turbo engine. Slow off the line but as soon as it hits a certain RPM, it takes off like an old turbo engine used to. That engine has been in Lexus models and the Toyota Camry, but they weren’t Atkinson cycle. They added that technology to the Tacoma because they were trying to figure out a way to get better gas mileage but you sacrifice torque off the line. The only thing to fix that problem is a tune.

Love the podcast. Love it! But the discussion about snow tires is always very Colorado specific. In colder areas it is all about the rubber compound, not the tread pattern. AT tires can be extremely dangerous in areas that have frequent black ice. In this case a dedicated winter tire is a must. An AT tire, no matter what the sidewall says, is not appropriate. You need to better qualify your statements when you discuss winter tires. Colorado is not the only place your fans live.

If people would look at actual dyno charts instead of manufacturer HP numbers, they could easily see the difference between good and bad powertrains. The Toyota 4.0 and the taco motor have similar numbers, but when you look at the curve on the dyno graph its not close. The 4.0 has better power throughout the entire powerband, while the taco just hits the numbers closer to redline. Thats the same reason I had to redline my taco to make passes on the highway.
