Caught this review late but I’m glad I did. Nice job!

Great review Jeff. Cheers for clarifying Runequest complexity for folks. RQ's brilliant to play, as long as you understand 70% is higher than 50% and that's higher than 20%. Could be useful to know that 50% and a half are the same. Beyond that, the mathematics are quite easy to make into a habit. Great game.

No one is confused by Roll over X or roll under X. That argument is either disingenuous or myopic. I have watched a few of those videos and it is the combat system, mostly, and the skill system a little. You have to remember there are, feels like, hundreds of videos for 5e about how to make combat easier and faster. If 5e combat is to slow and complicated for enough people to warrant making that many videos over time than how does Runequest stand any chance? Also, 5E is just a squad based combat simulator so people are having combat encounters all the damn time. I mean, just look at the backlash for -The Wild Beyond the Witchlight- if you have any doubt of this. "but what will my Barbarian do??!!" [if he can't fight anything]

I am not sure if I will ever play Runequest. Too many RPGs and too little time, but I love that you help spread the word about the diversity that exists in the RPG space.

Excellent review. Good advice about playing Runequest. In my experience Runequest was easier to understand than the time I tried Pathfinder. I would ask new players to start small and explore and expand your knowledge as you go. Don’t be afraid to change or omit things you do not like. As we say Your Glorantha May Vary and lastly Welcome to the tribe

Absolutely agree, start small and don’t worry about knowing all the lore before beginning. I began with RuneQuest 2 in the mid-80s and have been playing and GMing in Glorantha ever since. Been good and bad times since then but the products coming out now are superb.

About "There's 40 years of information/lore to digest - it's too much" The same could be said about D&D, too! It's all about perspective. Appreciate the review, still getting into Runequest (slowly, starter set and whatnot)

The difference is that the lore has been mostly consistent, but very dense and esoteric. Mean while the amount of retcons D&D went through especially in the last 20 years has been wild. If you read cults of terror and Cults of Prax or Troll Pack, or the condensed Glorantha Compendium Cults Compendium, the information just gets expanded on. It's one of the things I like about consistent settings that don't try to completely reinvent them selves every edition, that said my limits is Runequest 2nd, the Moondesign Glorantha Classics, RQG, Stafford Library, King of Sartar, Glornathan Sourcebook, and the Guide to Glorantha. So my blind spot is 3rd edition and Mongoose RQ.

It's a real joy to collect this series. Every book is just awesome.

Cliché or not...wow, that art! The Cults of RuneQuest series seems pretty amazing, but it's lower on my to-buy list than some other stuff, so I haven't dipped into them yet. Plus, I haven't managed & am not likely to manage, to get it to the table, so there's that. I know some folks run their games in the Lunar Empire, instead of Dragon Pass. Seems like it could be pretty cool. Per the complexity of the game, I also think it would be fairly easy to trim down the complexity of the combat system to be more in line with standard BRP. Still deadly, but less crunchy.
