Aspect of Dragonbane - the ease on the GM. First, I didn't think the roll under system would make a big difference but because success conditions are already on the character sheet, that solves a lot of debate. Also, I roll for what the Monsters do? Easy to run encounters. The Monsters always hit? Outstanding. Just picked up the Starter set and waiting for a Bestiary to show up in my local store.
@CarrollLiddellАй бұрын
One thing I like, thst i want to adapt to other games is how the monsters have roll tables for thier attacks. It helps with making your players feel theyre not getting picked on as well as allowing for solo play.

The mash-up between D&D and RuneQuest intrigues me. Plus I love the art style.

The Dragonbane one-shot I ran for some family was a hit. The combat and GM-facing stuff was something that originally caught my eye and it turned out quite well, providing some extra decision-making for the players while keeping the mechanical load fairly light. It's an efficient setup with a lot of bang for little extra trouble. Also helps not having huge monster stat blocks to keep track of, and the GM entries in the adventures are generally set up pretty well for a smooth run. I didn't have to create my own shorthand summaries - which saved extra prep time. As for this campaign's old-school style, with combat and exploration being heavily emphasized, it's usually what I look for. Running it for a group with a wide age range, I don't have to explain as much since they're often familiar with the themes. Thanks for the vid!

The part of Dragonbane that intrigues me is their artwork and how it simplifies its combat mechanics such that you can still do reactive moves like parry and dodge without slowing things down too much. Also the ability to overpower your spells by spending more WP is pretty nice balance between D&D and something like DCC with more random magic effects.

I just started playing Dragonbane and I love the roll under system and also how advancement works.

I am running a dragonbane game with my kids. The rules are much more streamlined than D&D. Combat is simpler and requires some planing on the players site. Combat is usually also faster since no one has very high HP numbers. Ther art in all the books is absolutely great!
@Gallowglas2057Ай бұрын
The part of Dragonbane that interests me the most is probably the way the monster encounters work; the combination of "monsters always hit in combat" and the random action charts makes most fights in the game feel very different than other fantasy games. I also really like that almost every piece of equipment has a distinct mechanical effect described in the core book.

Dragonbane is great because it is deep while being simple. It has good variety, heroes feel "mortal" and players need to think when they encounter enemies. Also minotaurs on the cover is perfect, it gives NOTHING away about this campaign.

I'm a huge fan of Dragonbane. Personally, it's the perfect middle ground between 5e and the OSR. I totally agree with this review, too!

It's a nice touch that the original author of the two first chapters of the campaign, Roger Undhagen, was invited to revisit and touch up his work. The third part, which was written by Michael Petersen, co-author of the Kult RPG, was criticized for being railroady in its original Swedish version. I suppose it has been brought up to more current standards as well.

Dragonbane is fantastic! Its a skill based TTRPG with a roll under mechanic which is wonderful. It's this coupled with the artwork which drew me in and continues to inspire me.

I love everything in Dragonbane. The art, the layout, the overall presentation, the rules. I really like that the combat is fast and simple, but still strategic. For me the game strikes the right balance between crunch and rules-light

Yeah, I'm probably going to have to grab this. I could see Dragonbane becoming my go-to Fantasy RPG. As much fun as I've had with Dungeon Crawl Classics, I just generally prefer a more Basic Roleplaying-esque system.

I played a ton of Drakar och Demoner in the 80's, and I love how Dragonbane captures much of the same feeling as DoD did, while still feeling modern.
@DavidMartinez-rk6fdАй бұрын
Can you tell what are the main differences between those two systems?
@KristerPerssonАй бұрын
@DavidMartinez-rk6fd Free League's version is much more streamlined and less punishing. Sure, it's easy to get knocked down, but also easy to recover. In older versions, it would take weeks or months of in-game time to fully heal. The streamlining comes with a price, though, as the characters are less diverse in the 2023 version. Overall, I would say that the new version keeps within the spirit of the old game while having a system that works well for current players.

This is the next game we have in rotation for our gang. I am really into the way monsters have random attack tables. This really mixes things up and makes for awesome solo play

I think the most intrguing aspects initially were the duck characters, and the d100 system. I like Chaosium's stuff a fair bit so having something else that feels somewhat familiar to that was definitely cool.

As a former DND player the role under system introduced to me with call of cthulhu has a far more intuitive and faster way of playing and unburdens the GM for setting up all skill checks. Dragonbane also has the more personal down to earth style of adventures which i have found more interesting than a save the earth problem.

Great review! Whenever I think of purchasing a supplement, I can count on you to do a review of it soon. I LOVE the Dragonbane Starter Box, it really gives me the old childhood feeling of discovering an rpg opening the box. And I love the character sheet; it has a lot of information on it, still is easy to grasp.

I like that Dragonbane has a few different rules, but yet it's still a fairly standard system, and fast to learn. Good class selection of classes too. ..and wolfkin!!! 😊
@LupusLore-l5cАй бұрын
One of the things that draws me to dragonbane as a system is mainly how free it is. By that I mean I'm character making. Being able to create a character and not have to worry to much about class is really nice. I also enjoy just how much teamwork it pushes. You really have to work with everyone to defeat a monster since they can auto hit if you don't use your actions to dodge in the beginning you have to dodge and let others take turns in damaging monsters. Wonderful system and wonderful video
@paulbigbeeАй бұрын
I like giving players a chance to push their rolls, and the conditions that they risk if they fail. Also, I heard on a Free League livestream that a supplement they want to produce is a book of magic.
@simontemplar3359Ай бұрын
obviously after the fact here, but just for the sake of discussion, I love the concept of "pushed" rolls. That mechanic of doing a re-roll for a failed attempt but incurring a condition was totally new to me.

The part of Dragonbane that interests me is the combination of old school and modern design choices. It is the modern fantasy TTRPG that feels unburdened of bloat and stays loyal to the classic fantasy tropes.

The "old" third chapter was so much more deadly and didnt feel "conected" to the previous part (i seem to recall a different writer for it but could missremember) and it was CRAZY deadly with really dangerous monsters with powerfull magical weapons to go killing time on the PC if "war is declared" on them (good luck sneak killing the undead humanoid monsters as rules for assasinations realy wasnt a thing at that time
