What we got was a balanced review with they eye of an experienced RPG critic. I think WOTC missed a trick here by not using the 50th Anniversary and calling it D&D 50th and still saying it was the backwards compatible game it is. I was pleasantly surprise by many things and am now looking forward to picking it up as a D.M. I love 5th edition and you confirmed what i hoped they had done. They made it more new player friendly. The blandness and weird attmept to make this “less offensive” and it’s uninspiring flavor aside, people need to grasp that some games are super fun to play but difficult to gamemaster. 5e has long been that beast. Most often the simpler games, while on the surface may seem “less fun” to players, are easy to GM. However, games like Castles and Crusades emulate D&D while making gamemastering easy. And games like Dragonbane (my current favorite) have some customizing fun and depth for players and is easy to GM. I am not a fan of all the lame attempts to strip games of “offensive” material but that isn’t why I won’t be playing 5.5. Its all about my ability to GM intuitively and quickly.

Wow, just wow! 🌟 I have to say, your review of the 5.5 D&D Player’s Handbook is nothing short of spectacular! You did an incredible job examining every aspect of the book, from the mechanics to the art, and your detailed analysis is truly impressive. Your ability to highlight both the flaws and the improvements shows a deep understanding and passion for the game. It’s clear that you put a lot of thought and effort into this review, and it really paid off. The way you broke down the mechanics was insightful and thorough, making it easy for both new and experienced players to understand the changes. The attention to detail in your discussion of the artwork was fantastic. You captured the essence of what makes the visuals in this edition so captivating. Your balanced approach, pointing out areas for improvement while celebrating the enhancements, was refreshing and honest. This review is a masterpiece in itself, and I can’t thank you enough for sharing it with the community. It’s the perfect blend of enthusiasm, expertise, and constructive criticism. The Bestiary in the back of the PHB is to aid Players as what is back there is stuff they'd have access to through Find Familiar, Wild Shape, etc. So rather than ask you for all that, it is there for everyone's convenience. And it also helps the Players know what to pick, so they can make an informed choice rather than again, ask you for the information. Is there some overlap with creatures that may be fought like a Wolf, Bear, etc? Sure. But most of what is there will almost always be something the Player uses versus something the GM uses. That is why it is in the PHB.

I was excited about exploring the rules, not for myself per se, but for my players who want to try them out. Then I went to Gen Con earlier this month where they were pre selling the books, but they made the process so convoluted that I gave up after trying for two days. So the way WOTC handled the pre-release really has left a bitter taste, even more than the OGL scandal, that I am now not even sure I want to buy the books when they finally get released, which is the opposite of what they were trying to do.

I appreciate the even handed review of 5.5. Neither fanboy nor hater. Always refreshing to see, so thank you for that. Having switched from 5E to Shadowdark over a year ago, I can say there's nothing that I saw in 5.5 that made me have any desire to switch back. In fact it's basically solidified that OSR adjacent and SD in particular is my new TTRPG "home." Clearly the 5E variant rule set is popular (Tales of the Valiant, 5E, 5.5, etc even aspects of SD) but I think a slow diffusion has begun in the TTRPG community of D&D losing ground as people branch out to other systems. I don't think 5.5 is going to reverse that trend, but time will tell. Thanks again for the honest review.

I'm relatively new to ttrpgs(2 years maybe?) but have now played quite a few other systems with our group trying out lots of games and it seemed like D&D 5E was far superior to most others that we checked out. I really, really liked it. We tried things like ,Dungeon Crawl classic (almost anti fun - too hard), Mutant Crawl Classics (same as DCC), Masks (superhero stuff that didnt have much 'game' to the game) and a few others that i cant remember at the mo. (some 'year zero' engine ones? - they weren't great either) A friend of ours said Pathfinder was too complex and slow as you're constantly looking stuff up - so we've not looked at that yet. Personally I'm probably more into the combat strategy and abilities than the boring talking (i guess the 'role playing' part of it!) but my friends do really get into their characters, so D&D was easily the one for us although we now want to check out a sci fi one- so I'm looking at the Star Wars roleplaying ones and Starfinder(even though its supposed to be like Pathfinder).

Think that's a really fair review, well done. D&D for a good number of years has been a very bland and sanitised fantasy game. This just looks like its gone all-in on that. If people like that, then fair play, but I'm not sure I'd be a 40+ year gamer if that was what floated my boat. So many more interesting and varied fantasy games out there - whether for rules, setting (implied or actual), and/or art. Really wish more people would spread out into those rather than starting and staying with this very insipid game.

@Thegaminggang2 ай бұрын
You might want to take a closer look at that page which listed the actions because it's presented before we get into the combat section. It also discusses searching for traps, trying to read an NPC's body language, social interactions, and other non-combat related sorts of things to do - all tied into that list of actions. ~ Jeff
@joshsykes36702 ай бұрын
@@Thegaminggang I don't have the book, and you do. So maybe you're right. But historically, there are no actions outside of initiative in 5e, since actions are specifically about what you can do on your turn. But technically, you can be in initiative outside of combat. That happens when timing matters. But maybe they've followed Shadowdark's lead and are doing always on initiative now? My guess is they just frontloaded the rules for what happens during initiative prior to the combat section.

I know rpgs are not limited to video game actions but you must remember that WoTC are setting this up for their VTT. It's better to sell those actions ahead of time if you are going to have a digital based game. At this point I see D&D wanting to be something like Dragon Age; most people know and play the video game but they have a physical TTRPG game you can play.

@Unregistered.HyperCam.22 ай бұрын
@@AverageTESEnjoyer5783Agreed, not to mention that they already tried this back in 2008 with 4e. Was a massive failure, but that's because not only were people not often acclimated to playing TTRPGs online(if you did, you either used a super expensive and complicated program like the OG Fantasy Grounds or something free, more complicated, and runs awful like MapTool or VASSAL), but because the person who was making the VTT that was supposed to drop with 4e left this world before that could happen. If they either waited a couple years to release 4e or they had a better launch with it, "One D&D" probably would've just been 4e.

Probably worth noting that forum moderators on the official D&D forums are admonishing anybody who has the temerity of referring to the new books as a new ‘edition’ as ‘disinformation’. This along with the recent hoo-ha about reviewers’ videos makes me think that WotC are quite weird at the moment. The game is OK, although Backgrounds are less flavoursome and more mechanical than previous and there is a general power creep in the game that makes it a little difficult to reconcile with the type of characters you get in classic fantasy literature. It really doesn’t feel like a generic fantasy RPG as such, to me. The stat blocks in the back are probably necessary for all the summoning spells are various animal companions, wild shapes and familiars that PCs can have.

The way the phb is presented, it is clear that dnd is a game for PLAYERS. DMs get screwed trying to come up with stories and run overly clunky sessions for players who want to be HIGH LEVEL. They think its fun to be a super hero with a thousand things they can do, but it's clunky and complicated for the DM. Ill be trying to convince my players to run through a zero level funnel so I can just describe some gruesome deaths if nothing more. Invincible PCs are annoying. Have you seen the new Ravenloft one ? They have turned most of the darklords into females, including a lesbian

The gripe about the action types is so off bade. Theyre not "out of combat options" they're both. They have mechanical purposes to clarify other rules for balance. But this does not limit what you can do or even think of doing. Honestly just a dense interpretation of that section. Really stupid. The more i think about the more stupid it is.

This looks more like Care Bears than it does Dungeons and Dragons. Why is everyone smiling and so happy. Dungeons and Dragons used to be about trying to survive horrible monsters that want to kill you in horrible ways. This is pathetic. WOTC has completely erased the pulp and horror origins from the game. These games were not meant to be easy. I understand that with Marvel and Manga people want a more superhero version of the game, where everbody can do everything at all times and never fail. If you like that, cool, but it is not the game I want. WOTC has taken something awesome and turned it into something lame. This is like watching your favorite death metal band morph into a KPOP boy band, because the label thought it would appeal to more people. There is also a financial incentive to push powers, feats, and power creep. I have been into this game since the 80s, and now, it is time to leave. Unfortunately, Pathfinder 2nd ed. seems to be going down this road. I will focus on DCC or smaller games that can invoke the spirit of the old game. This game is not for me. It is for shareholders.

I don’t like what they’ve done with the game and I don’t like the company. Weakest edition ever.

Looks like WotC is coming after other channels for copyright infringement. I don't think it's worth it and recommend you just take this down to protect your channel. We don't want to lose you!
Ive seen more exciting toilet paper than this book 😂

Ok, so your disdain for D&D shows through, but when you blatantly lied at 9:40 I have no further use for you. Did not get a straight answer? The straight answer has been available for months now, it is 5th Ed 2024. The reason this is important, which I won't know if you go into because I will not give you further watch time, but I am hopeful that maybe some of the others who stumble on the video might see my comment, is because 2024 is completely backwards compatible with 2014 which is very much not like 3.5 and 3, which is the parallel that your lie is going to draw.

This is a bit of a hysterical comment. 5.5 seems a completely reasonable shorthand for this.

If you have a book on your shelf and I have essentially the same book on mine and even put out by the same publisher and they are not just new "printings" but have undergone changes as minimal as just a new introduction they are different editions. Wizards of the Coast can employ all the rhetoric they like about backwards compatibility. Changes have been made. And changes big enough that we are going to see disputes at tables about which set of rules is to be used. It is a different edition.

What a small reason to leave. Do you do the same thing in game if someone uses a word you don't like?
