In the anime/manga Kaiba's company was the one who developed a prototype dual disk (the first ever modern dual disk) that looks like a throwable semi rectangular gadget that the duelist will slot their card they would play to the field, kinda like the ghost capture trap used in Ghostbusters with a cable connected to a hand gauntlet that stores the duelist's entire deck. The throwable rectangle thingy in question is basically somekind of holographic projector that emits a beam upwards that project a visualization of the said monster or the spell/trap card was slotted into it. Frankly, I could see something like this being possible with already current existing technology however it certainly wouldn't be something that would be feasible to bring it to the masses due primary to the sheer cost of developing, producing and maintaining it in real-life.

Something to think about, with the Arc-V Duel Disks, having a virtual card bank could definitely work, being able to display card effects, and building up decklists. It’d make it easier to collect cards that way, or at the very least streamline it so that you have a list on hand for what cards your looking for

Actually, the technology we have now does have quite a bit invested into augmented reality. The duel disk you were describing with a little touch screen device that could display the field would work fine and all you need for augmented reality is a headset that has proprietary software meant for using the application for viewing the cards and monsters come to life. All in all the devices could come up to about $800+ for the headset, which would be nothing more than a lens that went in front of the user's face, and probably about $300 per duel disk. All the duel disk would be is a combination of a touch screen device about 6x4 inches in dimensions and the actual disk itself. it wouldn't need overly powerful processors for it. Just a good battery. 3000 mAh should be fine and put a micro-USB port on it for charging/possible online play. The Duel Disks made in the past actually DID have a spot for the extra deck-- it was in the 5D's edition which was a small little compartment that pulled out. It was able to hold about 16 cards (with sleeves).... but that wouldn't make it in today's era with pendulum monsters. Also there can be a possible revision on the max limit of extra deck monsters in the future... with links I am actually on board with them ramping the number of extra deck monsters from 15 to 18. A lot of decks weren't exactly happy with having to replace some of their good extra deck strats just for the ability to play their hands. To me I feel like the best first steps to this would be to just make a touch screen duel disk. Start small. I know we HAVE the technology for augmented reality, but is it affordable? For most duelists, no. A touch screen duel disk would be plenty feasible for starting off. Once the technology for augmented reality comes to cheaper production prices, we can advance to using a headset and duel disk for yugioh, but for now, it just isn't feasible for konami... but myself included and probably many other people would be on board for a duel disc with a small tablet embedded that supported MR4. Just make the blade slightly wider, with the zones imprinted on the blade, and program the device to be voice activated to hear for cards. Just punch in the cards in your deck and when the disk hears you say something like "I special summon Blue Eyes Alternative White Dragon", it will recognize the card in your deck, and you can place the monster in whichever zone you wish, in which case sensors on the disk blade can respond to the device and it will appear on the screen. A finger stroke can pull up all the card's information, legality status (how many possible in one deck rather) and for certain cards, it can keep up with counters. I hated running out of dice running Endymion way back in the day. This can be seen sort of like YGOPro but on your arm and you play physical cards. The GY can be a compartment that would be located under the duel disk touch screen device. It should be probably about 4" deep and 62x90 mm. Just big enough that it gives your cards some slack, but tight enough that it wouldn't pop out accidentally and spill your cards all over the floor. For banished cards the duel disk should be able to adjust the monsters in your graveyard in order to apply the appropriate new placement of the cards. Like if someone used D/D Necro Slime in the GY and banished it with another D/D monster, it should recognize that you used this effect and it would apply that banished property to the monsters that were banished. as far as the motivation for Konami goes, if they become the first card game to come up with a plan to make dueling much more interactive and hands on, especially in a manner that goes along with their shows, not only will they sell more cards to newcomers, but they'll also make a lot of money selling duel disks of such I just described.

Fun tournament idea: Battle royal style. Players start with 8000 life points but 0 cards in decks! And all around the duel arena are various cards. (Kind of like in arc V) but you have to build your deck as you go. Decks of 40 only. One game elimination! BUT Your life points don’t reset! there are healing cards throughout the arena as well. There could be multiple levels in the arena and the higher you physically climb - the stronger the cards got! There would be elemental themed cards in areas that make sense like in the forested areas there could be insect and plant type cards, near bodies of water you’d find water type cards, etc. (Like in duelists Kingdom) And there would be rare burn spells that deal direct damage to your opponent! That would be single use only - so like you’d have them as part of your 40 but then use them and it would become blacked out or unreadable or something so people can’t play those anymore. And once you have a deck of 40 you can challenge players- but if they decline to play (for whatever reason) they take 1000 points of damage then the challenger can’t challenge that player again - so your not like hunting down players trolling them. But you have to be within 5 meters to challenge them - so there would be elements of like athletics, dodging, sniping, ambushing, parkour, climbing, and no one would have stupid powerful decks from the outset - because they all start on the first floor with 0 cards. Until all but one player stands victorious!!!!! What do you all think?

One suggestion for a legit Duel Disk: attachments. Make the default Duel Disk made for Speed Duels, with maybe one collapsible card zone on each side that can extend out with the press of a button for Master Rules. Then have some attachments that you can just click in whenever you need them. Have an Extra Deck? There's an attachment that you connect to the outside of the main part of the Disk. Need an Extra Monster Zone? There's an attachment that you can click in to the front of one of the two appropriate Monster Zones. Have a Field Spell? There's a small attachment that clicks in to the far left side of the blade of the Duel Disk that sticks out whether the blade is in Speed Duel Mode or Master Rule Mode. Playing Speed Duels and have a Skill? There's an attachment just like the Field Spell Zone attachment, but it goes on the far right side. You can keep these various attachments on a belt or clipped to your pants or something.

Actually, yeah. Literally nothing stopping that. You could have all cards in the game be coded into the game but decks are pre registered and passed out by name. You could have, for the duels, one person in one spot, another in another, and a few other places that would be displayed on TV screens. Hard part would be modeling all the monsters and coding all the effects but a season 1 of duel monsters version could be fairly easily made. Microsoft, get on it.

A Duel Disk with wireless/bluetooth connectivity that used some kind of scan/rfid system in conjunction with a phone-like screen to display cards would almost be necessary. It would require each duel disk to have two pop-out extra monster zones, and the display shows what a link monster would be pointing to. The biggest hurdle in all of this would be equipping cards with RFID trackers for the duel disk. Maybe come up with a voucher system where if you buy one of these duel disks, you are able to send in up to 75 cards to get redone with the chips to use with the duel disk. But, given how the META changes so frequently, the cost could be an issue if you're constantly sending cards in to get chipped. This would also be amazing for things like livestreams of YCS tournaments, going on the Big Screen idea, where those playing on the Main Stage would be playing in front of said screens. The possibility is there, it's just a matter of investment, I think.

I a good way to do it would be to have the duel disk as expected but instead of just having a life point counter there's a slot for a phone (adjustable of course) that would plug your phone into the duel disk and allow you to run an app on your phone (basically just master duel or something) that would 1. allow you to read your opponents cards without going over to them 2. keep track of life points 3. if you really wanted to go there you could put sensors in the duel disk that read the cards (instead of just having a manual play simulator on the app where you just mirrored your moves you made with your real cards) and have it automatically play the cards you played in real life on the game, this would also allow you to play online with other people with your duel disk without being in the same place. this would obviously be too expensive to sell to kids but it would probably work pretty well for tournaments because the online thing would allow it to prevent misplays/cheating and allow judges to monitor the duel a little better and you only need like 4-5, 2 for use and 2-3 backups in case of failures. and to prevent having to reprint EVERY CARD you could just make a set of sleeves with programable chips that the duel disk reads to see what the card is supposed to be, this would obviously have to be done by judges and watched very carefully to prevent cheating but the fact that there would be a real card involved means that in cases of suspected cheating judges could just look at what card was played compared to the players deck list and other info provided by the software. obviously this would be a massive undertaking to make and make work well but if it was made it would be EPIC to go to a tournament and see people having a full on anime duel with their monsters animated in battle on a tv behind them or something.

So I have an idea that might work. It wouldn't be as authentic as using an actual duel disc, but I feel it's a lot more viable for tournaments and a current day duel disc. VR duel discs. Say for example you're at a tournament, the next battle comes up and the VR server pops up on screen to show both duelists on stage in the VR world dueling against one another. Certain cards like the seal of orichalcos can get their unique animations and you could easily do holograms to allow your opponent to be able to read effects if they have questions about the card, or maybe have it read out with some AI voice like they do when the show randomly explains a card. To top it off, you could customize your duel disc and make it look how you want (Specifically models from the show). I feel it would be a lot more viable to run a duel disc at a tournament like that than any modern day device we could come up with, and to top it off, it would technically be cheaper as well.

A way you could do it is by having a duel disk with a part to hold a phone which has an app with a database of cards and tracks life points and what cards have been used in order of when it was activated, destroyed, summoned etc along with cards currently in play and effect. This is recorded by a third person (to make things easier) who acts as a ref and keeps track of turns, cards and chains. The person using the app no-matter if they are the ref or the player can check what has happened previously to have a better idea of the board and play accordingly.

A computer(basically the server) that stores the game history and sends out model data, card info, lp, and deck/gy/extra/banished size. That way anyone who has the app besides the two players can view the game. Players would only need a bluetooth duel disk and phone with a headset being optional. The duel disk has a camera on a track to move towards activated card zones and scan the card, and automatic card stack dispensers that sends a signal when a card is added or removed. New card sleeves(if normal ones already don't) that trigger capacitive touch would probably need to be made and the app would control card placement.

Technically, instead of paper print, the cards could be printed to those plastic Keycards. Image and all. Make duel disk using that to identify cards played or set, but also run along with Voice detection/recognition that track keywords like card names and actions “Activate[d]- [my] trap [card]- ‘Trap hole’- destroying your {target-card}-” and have the physical trigger button on the disk (like you see used in the show to activate the specific slot). And this could be partly tied to a holosystem with VR system (Like I can’t help small stadium area where projectors light up glass boxes to create the hologram). Or trying to make actual holograms for irl duals (which could be simplified by using some kind of screen visor that does the augmented/overlay of reality (kinda like pokemon go or the like imposed on the real world, which would also help with distance and reading opponent’s cards…) In a fixed area for irl, the play area could be fixed with clear walls to have the holograms projected on for audience viewing of the events, while the players use the vr-like eyeware. For on the street dueling… I guess it could be shared to be viewed via bluetooth to be sent to the viewer/audience’s own vr-lenses? Or preferred device phone/tablet/etc if done through a secure app encryption…

This video is 3 years old, I know, but VR dueling. VR dueling would be awesome, and it is prime for a duel-disk-based tournament. We have motion tracking VR; pair it with a duel disk and approach your arena or screen if you don't wanna do VR, but it would basically play the same as online dueling. With the Ipad idea, it can pretty easily scan your cards/hand, so it wouldn't be a big deal, especially if you can see your duel disk in your VR. Like a DDR sized space per duelist, so no one gets hurt. Take the 3d models from games, and you're golden. Obviously, some cards would be restricted, and it may start as "Play like X character" with a copy of their deck, just for proof of concept before anyone started customizing, but I think that'd be pretty fun tbh.

Dude!!! Fully customizable duel disks!?!?! That’s awesome!! And those parts would be hecka money too for collectors and the whales - but also Konami could absolutely make tons of money releasing fully customizable duel disk pieces! Like SaberForge ASP but for duel disk pieces. AND As your Duelist ID rank increases through playing games at official events you could unlock certain features and badges for your duel disk - kind of like bragging rites on your duel disk, so people like KNOW your a serious duelist! Look how much people spend already on Virtual cards, and card sleeves, and duel pets, and all these accessories. There is absolutely a market for hardcore anime fans and duelists to purchase and customize their dueling gear! Especially if the duelist disk systems have smart glasses and headphones. So now you have; The new type of cards needed to play with the new duel disk system. The completely customizable duel disk itself. The glasses And the headsets! Thats loads of investment for the players - which means a massive market for Konami

That can read 3. 3) Playing cards get chipped (credit cards have chips in them.) Just saying this has been a dream of mine just to experience. When I was a kid I was obsessed with Yugioh and got my hands on two Battle City Duel Disks. I thought "this is gonna be awesome, now we can duel anywhere just like in the show, this is gonna revolutionize dueling!". When I showed my friends my duel disks, rather than share my enthusiasm they were all like "wtf you get a duel disk for? ur gay brah" so I got my dad to sell them on ebay.

An electric dueldisk, with WiFi/blue tooth to connect to your opponent. Thicker cards with computer chips in them to read the cards. Or they could just put like bar codes or magnetic numbers at the bottoms of the cards so they could be read. Personally I think the two link monster zones are stupid and should not be included with the duel disk design - but some people’s strategies revolve around linking monsters together (on that note, the duel disk would play like duel links speed duel field with 3 monster zones and 3 back row zones BUT 2 link monster zones on each end and behind those zones would be your pendulum zones [I also hate pendulum summoning I think it’s broken and dumb]) ANYWAY!!! the Bluetooth connection would link the dueldisk’s top touch screen so you would see like a digital interaction like in duel links or master duel. And you guys could play as such. But I think the actual duel disk would look like the GX design because it’s more compact, but it would have like the Xexal screen looking top. What do you guys think?

Having built a duel disk out of legos when I was a kid, I can say that the place where you place the cards is the biggest peoblem - it's either extremely cumbersome, or very filmsy and easy to break accidentally , or both. The card holders are on the other hand are pretty much no brainer - that's what I defaulted after some time - it gives the feeling of duel disks and also was really neat for holding the cards.

If I jumped into another reality with dueling, here's what I think it'll look like: - The game is programmed for smart technology- you download and scan your deck into a "Duel Link" system. All card packs you physically buy or you own are registered through the system. You often won't see casual duelists bring their physical deck out with them, since it's so much more convenient to play digitally. Some people SWEAR by doing it "the old-fashioned way" because "You can't call it a card game without the damn cards". Asking if you play Duel Monsters digitally or physically is similar to the "Coke or Pepsi" question. - People won't carry around large duel disks we would know them to be. Those would be commonly seen in professional and academic use with full-on virtual reality support (Think Yu-Gi-Oh GX's academy arenas) that can be televised like sports. You would commonly see a TV at a bar or a restaurant reserved for a duel. Dueling channels have post game commentary and follow ups with the players. It's common enough to see celebrities build notoriety through dueling, and then switch over to doing something entirely different, like acting. - Commercial users utilitize smart watches that display holograms of your downloaded deck. Public areas have recreational "dueling fields" people can congregate to like what we might have seen in the original Yu-Gi-Oh. They could also be in parks or malls as well. - Many companies produces watches and accessories of different quality and aesthetics, and some are absolutely better than others. Some companies also help to print cards in regulation with Konami's corps dueling infrastructure, however. It can be seen as a status symbol to have a watch that projects monsters (since you're willing to show off your deck and skills to everyone around you). Konami keeps a tight leash on who gets to make cards (in an effort to keep the game balanced), but you'll often see Konami co-develop decks with companies of various industries. From McDonald's to Vera Bradley, companies can make a sponsored Duel Monsters deck. - Dueling serves many purposes to different people, and it's multifaceted. Some people treat playing a game with someone as the cultural equivalent of how everyone browses the internet on our phones.

The only downside of duel disks is the weight if we want the technology from the show. 1. Without hologram arena A. Disks will be linked to each other with Bluetooth. B. Small suction fan for monster card area so they won't slide off. C. Spring clip with dispensing wheel for the Deck. D.Slots on each side under disk for link/fusion monsters, banished and feild cards. E. Disks will have an eye in each playable card slot to scan card to know what card is where and card info. F. Cards need to be replaced with newer versions with QR/Barcode. G. Battery, charger port, and non-removable but updatable memory card to store card info. (30 gb should be enough for many generations to come) H. Screen on top to display LP and opponent card info I. For cards that let you control opponents', Bluetooth will come into play and register chosen cards. 2. For disk with arena A. Disks link to arena with Bluetooth instead of each other B. Arena field will be layered with clear resin/ plexiglass C. Each card area will have a very thin plexiglass box for hologram D. Between the two opponents fields will be a thin plexiglass corridor for when monsters attack. E. Field will be like a LED screen under glass to display card hologram/feid F. Multiple fans will be place among each players podium to simulate incoming attack G. Fans blow hot/cold air depending on field cards or opponents attack. H. Podium card area will be an LCD screen with eyes to scan cards. It will be expensive but if they make a country/world tournament and have the final 32 contestants use the podium/fields not only will they get a lot more people wanting to play but also will make a lot of money televising/ streaming the tournament. Imagine the sponsors and ad revenue. We absolutely have the technology to make this real I just don't believe they think it will be profitable.
