"MK9 saved the franchise." God, that statement that gets slapped on this nostalgia-bait game so that it will look more significant and good than it actually is. If we talk about financial status, MK was already purchased by WB, therefore however the next game would end up being, it would unquestionably receive superior budget and resources than before, both in production and in marketing, thereby reaching higher sales and popularity anyway. Based on that regard, it would be more accurate to say that MK vs DCU saved the franchise, since it brought it to WB's attention and showed that it was still profitable, and MK9 was the first game made after it was saved. Heck, considering MK's popularity as an IP, it would probably still get bought by someone anyway, WB or someone else. If we go about strictly popularity, some of tge things in the orevious argument apply here as well (already pretty popular, bought by WB thereby would reach bigger audiences by default). Some people say that MK9 made the series popular due to appealing to the competitive side of things, but tgat is an extremely weak argument. Forgive me if my understanding of how competitive tournaments work is flawed, but isn't a game being competitively popular by either influencial figures in the community playing it, the game itself being modified from its original state to fit the competitive field and the devs advertising the game in tournaments and such. These things don't have much to do with the game itself and frankly, I believe that this specific category matters very little to the overall debate to begin with. Finally, there is, in my opinion, the most important, yet also most subjective, aspect of the question, quality/entertainment value. This heavily varies based on the criteria we have over what makes a game good/fun and it depends based on our opinion about MK9 and the previous installments. In my opinion, MK9 oversimplified the story, the gameplay, the aesthetic and the additional content for the sake of mainstream and/or competitive appeal and gave birth or significantly worsened a lot of the series' constantly growing issues all the while paving the way for future mediocrity.

It to me showed a laziness in nrs hands with how they just didn't try with the ot characters not as fleshed out or liked. They could of reworked even Hsu Hao into something instead of giving his chest piece to kano. Like you can make something work with them ,but to me nrs just are lazy about handling characters. What bugs me of nrs game fans is hpw they will crap on the ot 3d characters yet they give the nrs trilogy characters who I'd argue just were as underdeveloped and undercooked a pass.

Really think you didn’t give the game a serious try. Mkx as a whole is an upgrade to mk9. Character design was improved, gameplay was made even faster, sfx were crispier and the combo potential is far greater to mk9’s because of the run cancelling. I’ve played both games autisticly and i truly believe mkx is NRS’s best game. Only issue with mkx was the balancing, but mk9’s balancing ecen worse because no patches

The PS360 era was the last time in history owning a console was still acceptable. For every Crisis or Half-Life 2, there was a dryspell where you switched to Xbox for more games. The fact we're just now getting proper PC releases of Lolipop Chainsaw and Red Dead Redemption is a testament to how many bangers those consoles had.

I've been playing MK9 since I was literally 7 on my PS3, I absolutely adore everything about it, as the transition from MKDC in graphics was awesome. Also, the combos and resets were nothing like I've seen, and the absolutely monstrous amount of content of the game got me hooked like the challenge tower. I'm still playing it to this day, and I probably never will stop.

Plus Onaga could've easily been the new main boss if they just ignored Kronika. Shang Tsung is underwhelming considering he was the last boss of the Aftermath expansion.

Killing King Jerrod was the pinnacle of that plan and the main reason MK was a priority was because Shao Kahn needed to win 1 more tournament against Earth realm before he could invade without Elder God interference. THAT was build up. Mk1 has NOTHING near that level of build up. Onaga is already in chains so they made sure to show us he's not a threat. The new timeline sucked. If Shao Kahn's new plan is to usurp the throne from Mileena it won't be anywhere near as urgent as when he killed Jerrod because of course Shao Kahn can kill Mileena. Plus on the flip side the only significance Mileena had to Shao Kahn was her complete obedience to his rule and she was going to trick the population into thinking she was Kitana. None of that is happening and nothing close to being as cool as that has been planned. Titan versions of the characters ruined MK's story telling. Titans should've been a separate species way stronger than Elder God's and Lui Kang becoming one should've been an extremely rare case. Only for them to show all the kombatants became titans in separate timelines ? That's lame as hell.

I really, really want them to take the risk again with special input meter burns. Idk if you remember this, but during mk11's super, super early development, during the earliest alpha test, meter burning moves required special inputs like pressing triangle, or pressing back + 2, or forward + 4. Unfortunately, fans wanted them to bring it back to just pressing R2. I want them to take the risk and bring it back again because it encourages hard work, more focus and effort in learning the characters. Not only that, they could implement multiple meter-burned special moves by inputing different inputs.

MK9 is what made me a fan of the series. How would you rank the all the NRS MK story modes so far? My personal list goes: 1. MK9 - Feels truest to the dark fantastical roots of the series with fun characters, though they write themselves into their first corner when Sindel murders several of the main cast members. 2. M1K - A fun, if too lighthearted in tone, re-reboot. But they shit the bed again by not just making it a clean break from the previous timeline by adding in multiverse nonsense that everyone is tired of. And they had a golden opportunity to use Onaga again, but he’ll presumably show up in a sequel. If they’re smart, they’ll put it the multiverse to bed for the next game, but knowing the present writing team, I somehow doubt it. 3. MKX - I actually enjoyed the dynamic with some of the Kombat Kids, but the story is bogged down by the overuse of the Special Forces faction. And what they had Scorpion do screwed them even deeper into the corner. More focus on Outworld stuff would’ve been better. 4. MK11 w/Aftermath - The Sonya scene near the start actually made me emotional, but again, the stakes are lowered because it’s the start of the timeline nonsense to try and dig themselves out of the corner. Even more questionable characterization and story decisions. Aftermath is propped up by the main trio of Shang Tsung, Fujin, and Nightwolf, but I think a lot of can us agree that it turned into a big shitshow near the end.

This game got me into fighting games. I labbed every character because they were all so fun to use. You’re able to pull off so many satisfying combos without meter. MKX was really good too. They really toned things down in MK11.

My gta verse has mortal Kombat being canonical to the gta games. The big difference is that there’s 2 different versions of the mk characters. They’re different characters with different names. Maybe share the same names. But their backgrounds differ. There’s a fire god Liu Kang and human Liu Kang, there’s a farmer Raiden. And the god of thunder Raiden.

Ok, permit me to be that “ACKCHYEWALLY” guy. Sonya’s chapter: I don’t think she beat Raiden. I think Raiden ultimately knew they needed to be on the same side, so he held back and didn’t want to actually hurt her. As for the helicopter getting to another dimension…it didn’t. Shang Tsung’s island is in Earthrealm I believe. Good video. Good stuff. I love this game and this story mode so much that I have every chapter and fight order memorized.

I always got the impression that Shinnok also sent himself a message to the past or at least had some idea of Raiden's changes. My reason being that everybody follows their script doing exactly what their characters did in MK1-3, EXCEPT for Quan Chi, who does do things differently. For example, forming the Deadly Alliance in MK2, which would have definitely lead to Liu Kangs death in the tournament. While Raiden just wanted to make sure Shao Kahn couldn't make to Armageddon, Shinnok wanted to make sure that both Liu Kang and Shao Kahn were already dead before he enacted his plan from MK4.

I like to believe that Taven was the winner. In Taven's ending, all of the fighters gained the power of Blaze through him. Raiden being able to send his consciousness back in time and Shao Khan being the strongest one still standing and everyone dead and slain by each other shows that the power was probably too great for anyone to handle.

So regarding the rules of the first tournament, the only logical explanation is if it's a team-based round robin where everybody on one side fights everybody on the other side at least once. Then if somebody on the defending side manages to win without losing a single match, they take on the two elite members being goro and Shang tsung. This sounds incredibly stupid, but remember that the rules are already stacked in shao Kahn's favor. for example any citizen of any realm can outright help out world, including people from the defending realm, but any outworld citizen has no choice but to help outworld if they decide to join. That's why boraicho never showed up. On top of that the banning of deities like Raiden and fujin exclusively help the attacking realm, as outworld only has one God, being shao Kahn himself who wouldn't want to join in that anyway and would rather send his lackeys. We can assume that the reason the rules are so wacky and lean heavily in outworld's favor is because shao Kahn helped write the rules if not wrote them completely by himself at which point the elder gods officiated them. There also doesn't seem to be any rules about when and how the fights happen. Which allows outworld to cheat even further because they get to decide that whenever. Like having people take on two separate combatants simultaneously, or just straight-up ambushing somebody with an immediate fight that they have no choice, but to take on right that second.

That... is actually a much better explanation of the tournament that we have gotten from even the creators themselves. Kudos. MK1 does explain their tournament format, but as we all know... Fire God Liu Kang reset the universe to make it happen this way. Damn thing is still incredibly lopsided in the New Era, lol. 🤣

Taven should have won... sort of. He says that it was a failure and he was trying to come up with a solution so what about after knocking sense into Raiden ( because I'm pretty sure Raiden is on the light side in intro) the fighting becomes too much and both of them realize the realms are about to tear themselves apart so THEN Raiden sends a message back, knowing it will cause a butterfly effect, of course past Raiden still wouldn't know what he meant and 9 can happen without missing the point of armageddon. Armageddon's whole point was all the fighting leads to NO true winners.

Well I believe that "He must win" was just fine. It was a dying man trying to send some type of message and only had a few seconds. Also if he said "Shao Kahn must win" then Shao Kahn would win the tournament and be able to merge the realms without violating the rules
