I dTuarascáil Daonáirimh 1659 déantar tagairt d’Áth na Long mar ‘cheathrú’ - foroinn de bhaile fearainn Muine Darach Mór. Cosúil le beagnach gach áit sa Mhúrn, tagann an t-ainm Áth na Long ón Ghaeilge. Ciallaíonn sé seo ‘áth na long’ - tagairt do thrasnú éigin ar an abhainn in aice leis an áit a dtéann sí isteach sa chuan. Is dócha go mbaineann sé le aimsir na Lochlannach timpeall míle bliain ó shin nuair a fuair na longa fada fothain ag béal na habhann.

In the Census Report of 1659 Annalong is referred to as a ‘quarter’- a sub-division of a townland of Moneydarraghmore. Like practically every locality in Mourne, the name derives from the Irish 'áth na long'. This means ‘the ford of the ships’- a reference to some crossing on the river near where it enters the harbour. It probably relates to Viking times of around a thousand years ago when the longships found some shelter at the mouth of the river.
