Been a fan since No Need For Alarm. I was in college in SLC and Third Eye Vision had recently come out. We lived next door to a bunch of skateboarders who rented this huge house. I went outside to smoke a cigarette and there Del was just hanging out with them while they were skating. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We all talked for a bit, smoked some J’s and played video games. He’s a cool dude.

Being 47, and from Oakland, I remember Dels underground buzz before his first album. He already had songs going around the Town. I admit, was a little thrown off when I heard My Brother George. It wasn't what I expected. It definitely had Lynch Mob "feel" all over, but it's still has a lot of standout joints. Hoods come in dozens, Awontwo, Pissin On Your Steps etc... I get it. My 24 year old son loves Del, but he says he just can't get into that first album. It's super dated, and has that quirky kinda early 90s thing going on. But it will always hold a special place in my heart because of what it represented in the Town at the time. Remember, Oakland was in the middle of a huge turf war, and was putting up historically awful crime stats in the early 90s. So Del, coming out of left field, was literally like a superhero in my eyes! 😂
@xNicktoriousx10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I totally agree with that quirky feel of I Wish My Brother George Was Here. I kinda misrepresented myself a bit as I definitely don't think it's as bad as I came across in the video, it's just among my least favourite del albums. Those tracks you mentioned though are great. I also like Dark Skin Girls too :P

I love that you did a piece on Del. He's my favorite rapper as well. The only parts I disagree with you on is that I thought Golden Era was a pretty solid album; not every song was a banger but like half of them were IMO; and also his album with 9th Wonder was pretty amazing too. I've seen Del twice, Souls of Mischief twice, and I love all of Hiero, even have a Heiro tattoo on my left arm lol. Much love tho man and keep listening to dope music!!!

Thanks man! I really enjoyed making this video, and while it has its flaws, its pretty decent and I could think of no man more deserving than the legend himself! Since publishing Ive done a solid reexamination of his work post-deltron and I have altered my opinion on it, and have found the beauty in this era of his career. I don't think he fell as hard as I implied in the video.

Nicely put. Del was and will forever be my absolute favorite artist. His versatility and ability to set tones and themes with his voice and writing alone are incredible to say the least. Some constructive criticism regarding the video: The song Proto-Culture actually doesn't have Casual on it, it's Del's friend Khaos Unique who did literally one song other than P.C. The other thing is your avatar is kinda awkward and doesn't really convey any actual body language other than awkwardness, (pacing around, kind of looking around while talking) I know it's most likely just a software/program thing but figured I'd provide some constructive feedback. I like the concept though quite a bit. Most importantly Thanks for putting into form exactly everything I love about Del as an artist, though it is subjective, I personally loved Eleventh Hour.
@xNicktoriousx2 жыл бұрын
First of all, thanks so much for this awesome comment! The Proto-Culture thing I know.... when I read your comment it all clicked. I always had it in my head that Casual was the one featured on the track for some reason, then in my research I finally found out that it was Khaos Unique. Then when I needed it most my brain farted and I still defaulted to Casual. Sorry Khaos haha. Editing the description now for the correction. Also I agree with the avatar, I'm trying to work it out a bit, and if that fails I'll stick my face on the screen haha. I just really want to make the avatar work, so hopefully I'll iron it out over the next few videos. Finally, maybe I was a little harsh on Eleventh Hour, I mean commercially it aligns, but the album does have some great tunes on it like Bubble Pop. Actually I love that song, was definitely harsh on Eleventh Hour. Again, thanks so much STRYDER, greatly appreciated.

Correction: Proto Culture doesn't feature Casual on Both Sides of the Brain. He is on the incredible Jaw Gymnastics though. Still awaiting the Smash Brothers album! As for Hiero/3rd Eye Vision.. A-Plus's flow, patterns and delivery stand out! Casual and Pep Love are also heavyweights. Hiero have a lot of distinct voices. Opio and Tajai.. Phesto is solid. For me though, seeing Souls live, Tajai and A-Plus are next level. The Souls faction's synergy live is both tight and elastic, a great live show. I think this is lost though when the whole Hiero perform altogether.

Damn lmao...you started listening to hip hop with Eminem and 50? Thats not a good place to start at all haha. Also, hip hop had been popular for many years before either one of them came out. Del's first album was dope af. You guys have to adjust your ears to early 90s underground hip hop if you are going to listen to it or have an opinion on it. That raw analog sound was not "bad quality" it was what they were going for. It differentiated the genre from pop music that had a more "polished" sound. Hip Hop began in the streets, clubs, and parks of urban settings so that raw sound kind of mirrored the way you hear it in those enviornments. Its raw and it bumps. Learn about it.

Cool to see some Deltron appriciation. I was in high school when i was shown the album by my friend doug. I was apunk, and getting into retro futurism, and had been also into hip hop for a few years. I had been exposed to del for years. My first time hearing him, was clint eastwood. and i was in middle school. My friends who formed the hip hop group apex realm would go on to open for del. Deltron 3030 ignited my obsession with retro futurism and cyber punk. and while Event II has some good songs, the reason Del was never the same is because of his battle with psychadelics. Which sounds stupid. But Acid can be debilitating on the memory, and ones santiy. To explore why dels career was derailed when he was dropped from his label, you have to understand his battle with drugs. He was dropped because he was doing stupid shit. But its a good thing it happened because he then made deltron 3030, which he wrote the entire thing on lsd. And the reason it was never the same, is because hip hop would change from the stylistic formula of a cool beat to a flow, to being more like lil wayne, and other more shallow bs. Del had trouble with live shows, he forgot lyrics, made up lyrics on the fly, he struggled with drugs, and this plus his style having to change with the times, is why it was never the same. He wasnt the same, because hiip hop was never the same. In fact hoip hop hasnt sounded the same, in years. Its been slowed down, and simplified. Dels biggest gripe with the first 3030 album is that his friends couldnt understand what he was saying. Regular guys from the ghetto couldnt relate to it, or understand it, and Del decided to cator towards them later on to try and achieve some sort of commercial status, but it is why his sound wasnt as complex, or intelligent. He had cooled it on psychadelics, and this fucked with his memory, and therefore the music suffered. The appeal of the first 3030 to a more universal audience is the complexity. Take that away, something is missing. He made the mistake of wanting his friends to like his concept work, when it was a good thing they didnt like it, because that meant it transcended the simplistic ghetto mentality that plagues most hip hop. I stopped listening to new hip hop after event 2, because i knew hip hop was never gonna be the same. Sure he gets very lyrical in event 2, but the concepts, are as intricately woven with futurism, using langugae we understand. Of course some asshole selling crack on da corner isnt gonna be into a futuristic concept album. And thats why its so good. The same thing also happened to immortal technique, stylistically, hip hop changed across the board, be it the digital recording ability, technology, whatever, but where immortal technique made amazing music, thats complexity was lyrical, he too would simplify his music, and it did the same thing as del. It dumbed down the music, made it less appealing for audiences that didnt drive around in a impala with spinners, and go to the club, and pop a cap in some foos ass. Fuck that ghetto culture bs. Deltron was great because it transcended that. same it immortal technique. So in that fashion, hiop hop as it was is dead. The production quality is to manufactured engineered, and commercial. And that is why hip hop in its more stylistic and purest form is dead.
@xNicktoriousx2 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm inclined to say you're totally right. That was something I was completely unaware of, and given my own personal struggles with drugs, I can totally relate and understand. It makes sense because most of the live performances I've seen of him, I wasn't entirely impressed by his performances, they weren't bad, but they weren't that great either. It would make sense given his substance abuse issues. About hip-hop as it was being dead, you're right on the money with that, at least within popular culture. Over time the hiphop scene has definitely had huge waves of changes, but also, the past is the past, unfortunately. I see it with metal music too, thankfully I can still appreciate the direction the genre is going, especially when compared to hip-hop. Maybe I'll have to do a follow-up to this video. Thanks for the comment, brother!

Still good stuff out there being released today, just have to dig a little deeper in the crates. Even back when 3030 released, Master P/No limit/cash money crap was huge, and were claiming "death of hip hop." Imo, as long as people still buying the real, good hip hop is going nowhere. Nas and Black Thought releasing some of their best work in recent years is just a small example
