Pai, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a whole new channel of this!! I mean your English and tones help me understand better in learning Thai. Please keep the videos coming! Next cover could be: Daily conversation with haggling over the prices in the market or getting to know others (exchanging numbers, asking for occupation, etc).

Hi, these clips are very helpful, great job. Have always trusted your Thai recipes (including Mark Wien's). You are actually a very good ambassador of Thai culture. Two terms which I think are helpful to know are 'having here' or 'to go'.

Your language lessons are really excellent, so it would be great if you could do more. Anything would be a big plus for me as I plan to hopefully go to Thailand (pending the virus situation) towards the end of the year.

I took a Cantonese language class at the University of Calgary in 1985. The teacher told us not to be concerned with the tones and taught us vocabs including “mittens”, “scarf” etc. I arrived in ToiSan in May and was disappointed not to be able to buy mittens in the mitten market.

How do you say "order to go"? Going to Thailand next month, I need to catch up on the language. Thank you!
@bend.60913 жыл бұрын
After the name of the dish you ordered, add ใส่ห่อ Sai hor = To be packed or (เอา)กลับบ้าน (Ao) Klab Bann = To take home. There are 2 phrases I can think of right now. Choose any phrase. BTW, welcome. but please don't expect too much. Thailand is, like all places, just a small country with good and bad things/people. High expectation usually leads to disappointment when things don't go as good as we expected although it might be OK in its own way. Have a good day ms.

Good luck with identifying yourself as gin jay - given that it is almost impossible to find a truly animal product free fare in Thailand among the locals (yeah, yeah...I know there are trendy spots catering to tourists...) Having lived for many years in China and having spent much time in TH while personally following a WFPB regimen, walking about identifying yourself as 'gin jay' and expecting to find anything other than the meat simply removed as an afterthought from an otherwise meat-based broth, etc. dish will result is a terrific weight loss solution. ;-) Short of ordering an ear of corn or fruit from a vendor, TH is simply not 'vegetarian'... regardless of what you may gather from the myriad 20-something tourist fruitflies posting on KZbin. If you want truly animal-product-free and/or oil-free fare - learn to cook and enjoy the wonderful open/wet markets. Bottomline - contrary to what many people erroneously believe based on watching episodes of Kung Fu, MOST Buddhists are NOT 'vegan', nor are the vast majority of the Thai people. So if you do have the opportunity to visit TH (or any of the Eastern Asian countries) please be prepared to assume responsibility for the choices you make. Thailand is indeed a wonderful country filled with marvelous people!!!!

You are absolutely right! Thailand is not very veg friendly, unless you go during the gin jay fest. I didn't have time to get into all the details in this video but I'll add these notes in the blog post :)

Love the videos. I lived in Thailand for 2 years and it's my 2nd home. My family and I love to cook Thai food, and your videos are a great way to brush up on some of the recipes. I think a short lesson on the different foods that come from the different parts of Thailand would be good for your viewers so that they know what parts are famous for certain dishes. I logged in Bangkok for about a year and the other year was in the Isan, so waterfall pork, laab duck and som tam Lao are near and dear to me.

"Mai(no,not) Sai(add) Prik(chillie)" is the safer for who can't eat chillies krap. with this word they will not put any chillies at all. sometime say "mai ped" to the restaurant they still add some chillies but less than normally they cooking krap.
@gozu94556 жыл бұрын
doesnt hurt to a tiny bit of chili :/ the taste of it does go a long way
@wizard15156 жыл бұрын
In e-san resturant If you order papaya salad , tom yam or any food based on spicy taste. Chance they going to put chilli can be happen. Because "Mai(no,not) Ped(spicy)" also mean "less spicy" in difference meaning+chance+situation. That's mean that dish they going to make might not completely no spicy. And some of westerner can't handle it. I had to explain to my foreinger friends. About they ordered a salad with "Mai Ped" and still got a spicy one though.
@BaronSamedi19596 жыл бұрын
When I ordered a papaya salad "mai sai phrik" they didn't add any chillies, but pounded the salad in the same mortar where they just made a very hot one (for my Thai girlfriend) and mine came out quite hot as well. 555

in teochew "hoi" means crab😂
@YummYakitori5 жыл бұрын
Tan Allen In Teochew, “not” is also “mai” and “vegetarian” is also “jay”. Other Teochew loanwords in Thai include words like “tu” for “cupboard” or “wardrobe”, “gaoyi” for “chair”, “sui” for “beautiful” and “kway teow” for “noodles”, assumingly because there are many Teochew speakers in Thailand (more than half of all Thai Chinese are Teochew). “Gai” sounds exactly the same as the Cantonese word for chicken too.

I think I am not the only one that has been sitting eating with thai people where one or two know english, but the rest only knows thai.
