This is the best video about Thai tone rules I found so far. Easy to understand and good to remember because you explaine very alive. Creating a picture story using the consonants is a very sustainable way to remember each consonant in the respective class. I can apply this scheme to almost every syllable. Thank you very much for this video.

I think this is the way Thai children learn it. Adults might prefer to chose a more systematic approach.

Amazing video! Super clear explanation and everything makes senses. We have pretty much the same concept and way to teach the complicated tones rules of Low class consonants! I’m amazing by this video. Thank you for sharing this to us 🙏🏽🙏🏽

ขอบคุณมากนะครับแล้วก็ขอโทษสำหรับภาษาอังกฤษที่ไม่ดี I think the animated symbols and the movement on the screen keeps the audience and makes it easier to remember.

Did you know that most Thai people don't know this rule? But they can spell and pronounce correctly by memorizing each word.

Yes, I know. For Thai people it's their mother language, they FEEL the words more than memorizing. I think for Thai learners it can be helpful to know these rules.

We know it by heart. We learnt by chanting ก ข ค everyday. The sound of each character has tone embedded in them. For example ก has middle tone ข has rising or high tone ค has low tone. This can then be grouped into 3 groups as explained in this video. When combined with vowel together with tone mark, each group will follow the rules of tone differently. For example ก will be sounded 5 tones กา ก๋า ก้า ก๊า ก๋า. However ข and ค will have only 3 sounds with different sets of tone marks, ขา ข่า ข้า and คา ค่า ค้า. It looks complicated. But we know this by heart. I don't think by trying to make sense of it will help mastering Thai sounds. You should learn as we learn as a young kid. Chanting!

Thank you so much ~ this is easily the most concise explanation of Thai tone rules that I have found. It will be perfect to help review and keep these rules in mind. If you ever feel like making a video about the Vowels or Consonant clusters, they would be most welcome! :)

Explanation is good,but what’s up with the background music? I don’t understand why the need for loud background music in most of these teaching videos especially when the emphasis is on sound and careful listening. It negates the whole purpose of the teaching.

Regarding the pictures using in the memorizing of all three classes in the alphabet, the Lao language has its own easier way: (I skip the consonants of Sanskrit origin which the Lao doesn't possess) _High class ข ส ถ ผ ฝ ห in Lao ຂ ສ ຖ ຜ ຝ ຫ - ໄຂ່ ໃສ່ ຖ້ານ ໃຜ ຝາກ ໃຫ້ which means "egg - in - the plate - who - sent - to me" (ໃຜ is ใคร in Thai) _Mid class ก จ ด ต บ ป อ in Lao ກ ຈ ດ ຕ ບ ປ ຢ ອ - ໄກ່ ຈານ ດີ ຕີ ບໍ່ ເປັນ ຢ່າ ເອົາ which means "rooster fighter - mister - Dee - can't fight - don't - take it (St Thai doesn't possess the ຢ/yo but the counterpart is the ย/yo-yak in the low class) (ບໍ່ is ไม่ in Thai) _Low class ค ง ช ท น พ ฟ ม ย ร ล ว ฮ in Lao ຄ ງ ຊ ທ ນ ພ ຟ ມ ຍ ຣ ລ ວ ຮ - ຄົນ ງົວ ຊ້າງ ເທົ່ານັ້ນ ພໍ້ ຟານ ເມື່ອຍາມ ຣົດ ແລ່ນ ໄວຮ້າຍ which means "human - cow - elephant - only - see - deer - when - car - driving - very fast" (the counterparts of the Lao ຊ/so, ວ/vo and ຍ/nio are ช/cho-chang, ว/wo-waen and ญ/nio-ning loaned from the Sanskrit) ( ພໍ້ is พบ/เจอะ, ແລ່ນ is วิ่ง, ຮ້າຍ is ชั่วร้าย) Btw, the tone rules in the Standard Thai can't describe phonetically the speeches of the northeastern inhabitants (Isan) due to the fact that the language they speak there mostly is Lao which has dissimilar tones, although the diacritic marks are the same.

Thank you for your comment, cornellebrown. This video is for people who start learning reading and writing Thai using the correct tones. Sorry, I didn't mentioned it. Even if you don't like this video, I can highly recomment learning Thai by reading so you will not depend on the Western transcription which include a lot of mistakes.

Ideally, you should learn spoken Thai by immersion, while studying the writing system - starting with consonants, then vowels, then tones - in that order. As long as you have been paying attention to what tones sound like in learning spoken Thai, then when you get to learning how to predict them through the writing system, it will be much easier.

great, what is the dead ending sound ?
@jochimschrank6971
@jochimschrank6971 7 ай бұрын
A dead ending sound, also known as a t-stop sound ends with a consonant like 'd', 'g', 't', 'p', 'k' etc. You can't strech out the tone. A life ending sound can be streched out or hold as long as you can breath out, like 'm', 'n', 'l'. Sorry for the late reply ;-)
