"We did something nobody thought possible," the leader of the Thai cave rescue mission declared today after the last trapped boys and their coach were finally freed, ending their 17-day ordeal. The dangerous, highly complex operation was launched after the group became stranded deep inside the flooded cave. They'll now be in hospital for at least a week, and they're being quarantined for fear of infection. Their families have only been able to see them through a glass window.

@Mega - no one knew where the boys were located. When these two internationally renowned British cave divers heard about this they flew at their own expense to help. They were the ones who located the boys. (Nothing at all really, - EXCEPT THAT THE THAI NAVY SEALS COULDN'T DO IT THEMSELVES).Not even worth mentioning really is it?

I agree Richard. They were so deep in the cave (2.5 miles!) further than they first imagined and through some incredibly narrow passages you had to take your tank off to get through. How fearless they were to risk their own lives! Being the first divers to go so deep they deserve some extra credit.

An extraordinary effort by all. The diver who gave his life and all the others were incredibly heroic. The coach in particular deserves praise for his amazing efforts over ten days of no contact, no food, no light. He set the tone and kept them calm and unified.

You don't understand the facts of what happened. My wife is Thai and has family in the area and spoken with many of them. He followed the boys in who were going with or without him and without him they all would most likely have died. They went into the caves while they were open. They were scheduled to be closed for the rainy season a few days later but they were following the regulations in entering that day.The rains that day were both unpredicted and huge. They had no choice but to go further into the caves and you can be sure that every last one will credit the coach with keeping them alive.

To be fair, what led the coach to take the kids into the cave was mostly not his fault considering given information but certainly what he did to keep the kids safe in 9 days without food was proof that he took care of them well, even giving all the food and water he had on him, that he neglected his own health, which made him in worse condition of the 13. Like the trained seal that died by neglecting his own safety and working too hard by running out of air unexpectedly. I see no reason to blame anymore but to be more cautious next time and have extra safeguards for the cave to prevent this from happening again.

So so happy for the boys and their coach. So many people to thank for, the Thai seal who gave his life, the British expert divers, all of the international support, volunteers, the young coach who took good care of the boys during this ordeal and gave up his food ration so the boys had better chance of survival.... The rescue plan was executed so well and it turned impossible to be possible. This is a miracle I did not think it would happen but it did. Thank you everyone! I hope to see more details or documentaries later.

Emily Hutjes I know it was a miracle because on the morning that the rescue began knowing nothing of the plight of those boys I knelt to pray as usual...I usually don't have my phone nearby as I pray as it may distract me but that morning it was nearby and I picked it up and looked at it before I started to pray...rather unusually because I did not swipe to clear the screen nor open any apps , Google news stand was open on my screen with the boys story...I read it in horror but quickly understood that God was bringing them to my attention before I started to pray...that morning I more or less forgot to pray about anything else other than these boys and throughout the day my thoughts and prayers rested on them...I live far from Thailand...in the Caribbean Sea. .It would be very unusual for me to have interest in Thailand news but God drew my attention when it was necessary and made me pray...I knew then that he would aid in their rescue and that each boy and their coach would survive. .He is an awesome God..I pray that more and more people would come to realize this before it's too late for them...I acknowledge that the team of divers was very very good but it was God who enabled each and every one of them to carry out his task so effectively..I thank God for preparing their hearts mind and bodies for such a time as this and may each one of the persons involved in this ordeal come to the acknowledgement of the goodness of God... Amen

I feel for the Australian doctor; he came out of the cave yesterday to the news that his father had passed away at home while he was on his way out... (in addition to that, his wife died several years ago in a cave diving accident when she ran out of oxygen and suffocated after getting disoriented after going down a wrong passage...) That guy had every excuse for saying “isn’t there someone else you can get for this...?” but no, he immediately grabbed his gear and went straight in; that’s one emotionally strong guy who lives the ideal of his doctor’s Hippocratic Oath...

I think that most of the " prayed to god or jesus" comments are from trolls. There can't be that many stupid people left in the world. The comments are offensive in a number of ways. They ignore the beliefs of the local people, they ignore the beliefs of the rescuers, and give no credit to the experts who endure difficult and dangerous conditions. If they are not trolls, they have labeled themselves as people unfit for normal society.

These doubters and haters lack knowledge. As if God gets rid of every hardship and trials there is on Earth as if it was heaven. Do not let these ignorant faithless people have an effect on you. They are sheep who think they are God and should be served as Gods. They are ungrateful, entitled garbage who want what they want when they want it and want everything in their favor. As if Jesus had everything his way. As if he enjoyed a luxurious life with no trials. They blame God for all the negatives and forget him in all the good things. Unthankful. Biased. Ungrateful. Considering they havent even studied let alone read the Bible. What do you expect them to know. We are unable to comprehend the convoluted and complex plan of God. Remember that everything has its reasons. These fellas are unable to see that. They are rather one dimensional. Instead of asking why me, ask what am I to understand. Where there is creation, there is a creator.

ByteKnight Its answered prayers because of all the lives saved, and all those that survived. In spite of the fact that all the experienced skilled rescuers had doubts it could successfully be done. Did you not hear that the boys and their coach were rescued safely? Or are you just grasping at straws to be disrespectful to those who believe diffeently than you. Because you refuse to include others who are different from youself? Which is it?

Plus, this "mountain goddess" held them hostage for 9 days so I wouldn't be thanking her since she didn't seem to be letting up on getting them out. God I believe in, in the Bible usually inspires people to go help, which is what I think I have seen today.

People who praise the Christian god please remember that Thailand is BUDDHIST. Buddha also is not a Deity. Not a God. Never has been, never will be. That is why Thai monks practice martial arts, generosity, humility, and seek the wisdom and enlightenment that the Buddha taught. Even the Thai Kings have been monks in order to rule wisely. No fancy magic involved. Do not ever insult Thailand by preaching Christianity to Buddhists.

This story in Thailand has brought Joy all over the world. The international effort to save these boys was heroic. It is beyond Wonderful that these children were freed from that dark cave and will soon be reunited with their parents. The Stark Irony of this story is that in the USA hundreds of children, many younger than these boys, are living in their own little 'dark cave'...separated from their parents with no idea when they will be 'rescued' and reunited. Maybe we need an International Rescue Effort for children here??
