Thailand cave rescue: Third phase of operation is underway

Thai officials said Tuesday divers had begun their third trip into the cave in the hopes of bringing out the remaining five people trapped in the cave. Mauritius Bell, a diving instructor with San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences, joins CBSN to discuss what is involved with the rescue.

Thank God and thank the divers. Those men are super. How they manage to find the kids was mind boggling - Pretty sure the cave has networks and forks that lead to different places. It’s incredible. The weather slowed down and stopped for a short period, so they could pump the water out. So glad for the good outcome!!

I've been folowing all news networt because of these 13 people or kids being trapped in a cave. After all many news,it became fine now because they almost get them all. Hopefully its getting more fine in the next hours,kudos to all people that helping,divers,navy seals,volunteers. The coach is an ex monk who kept those boys alive by teaching them meditation for 9-10 days. I feel this is what has helped the boys remain calm as the divers set up and bring them out slowly; and as they swim through the dark cold cave trying to get out. between the meditation and the rescuers steady hands I am sure that is what has kept those boys from panicking. I do not thank a god for this heroic effort. I thank and praise all the people sacrificing their lives and all the education and training that has led them to be able to help in this moment. They are not diving that deep so decompression shouldn’t be a big deal which is good

FreshlySnipes yeah, you don’t need to worry about decompression until you get into deep sea diving, which is around 30+ meters I believe. It’s more fatigue, hypothermia and time that these divers need to worry about. Diving for even an hour is absolutely exhausting without heavy tanks, thick wetsuits and gear to lug in and out of water. These people are absolute athletes and are definitely respectable.

march march They were exploring the cave, but due to the rising water levels, it meant their exit was blocked. Therefore they needed to find higher ground or even another exit, leading them deeper into the cave. Imagine being in their situation knowing the water level would be rising and needing to find a safe place.

If people were really paying attention, those boys were given an anesthetic and were virtually unconscious. The rescue divers could not take the chance of the kids panicking so they were knocked out. The rescue divers delivered those boys like UPS packages. .

Yes, actually they wear multiple suit on them to keep them warm enough during the dive.

yes, with specially fitted full face scuba masks, plus wetsuits, boots and helmets.

These boys are supplied the necessary safety equipment required for the environment. And they have been given nutrition, hydration, training and psychological preparation needed to make the journey out. While it is a very dangerous rescue, they couldn't be in better hands.

CliffHuxtableSweater what’s fishy ??... they went to explore a cave. That’s open to tourist, due to rising water levels meant they had to go deeper into the cave to find higher ground ! It meant having to go through those small passage ways hoping to find another way out. They are lucky they found high enough ground to where the water levels stopped just before the water got to them. I’m sure their original intention was to just adventure the entrance passage way that’s just over a mile long, but on their way out the water had risen.

Ram Basnet it’s a large entrance, only gets smaller as you go on. But due to the water rising and blocking the exit, they had to go deeper into the cave to prevent drowning.
