I first went to Chaweng beach in April, 1993. Only one hotel on the beach with air con, and the main road wasn't paved until about year 2000.

I went in 98, no McDonald's etc. Mango Tree to party and JS Bar until the sun came up. JS Bar had an eclectic mix at 7am, off duty sex workers, people who were high, people coming down......... Cheap Jack Daniels.

I was there in 1989 sitting in a beachside bar when two early to mid-20 English guys flew pass on their motorcycles and hit a dog on the street came off and skinned themselves. Chatted to them while waiting for help and they said they had just come from Phuket where they had scored work as extras on the Sean Penn and Michael J Fox Vietnam war film "Casualties of War". They were pissed that after getting lucky their luck had run out.

OMG, the bar area inland feels like an adult theme park with the lights, music, digital signs. I keep thinking some elite Thai have sunk a lot of $ into opening all of that to make more $$$$$$. The beach areas seem crowded, but peaceful. Gorgeous water.

Samui is cool. Was there in '19 and loved it. Next time I'd like to explore beyond Chaweng, heard Bohphut on the north end is nice, and Lamai beach area looks good too. Much prefer this island to Patong

Thats really an awesome place Greeny. I went to Koh Samui on my first trip to Thailand in 1994. Ive been back 2 times since then. Have you figured out a good way to get around the Island ? Last time i was there just about every Motorbike Rental required your Passport as a deposit so i decided not to rent one on those terms. So i was left with the Taxi Mafia and that got old after a while since i was on a Solo trip. Just wondering what your experience was like regarding transportation on Samui. Great Vid by the way. We just took the taxis and paid a lot. I would rent a motorbike but my friend hasn’t done it before

I rented a great bungalow in the Maenam area, the owner got me a nearly brand new motorbike from an English guy, didn’t need to give him my passport. A motorbike is essential imo!

Greeny , I found a little restaraunt in Phuket that has the fish tanks ya put ya feet in that’s free , you sit there and eat while they are nibbling on your feet , first time I did it I was freaked out

Looks busier than when I was there last time I was there. One disadvantage samui has is high airfares with one airline having a monopoly so you have to take the ferry.

Just plan well in advance. You can find one-way tickets at $100-$120usd. Just one of those "is what it is, ain't gonna change any time soon" kinda things. It's a money Vs. travel time choice.

@@vgshwk Yes, the traveler's total schedule length is also a factor. I'm a "3 weeker" coming from USA (24 hr trip) so I do a circle of Pattaya > fly > Samui > fly > Phuket > fly > BKK. I usually come Feb. and purchase all travel and stays the Oct-Nov prior.
