As someone with a pet snake I can tell that all of these reptiles are quite unhappy, either lethargic or trying to escape. There are many legal pet stores that do it much better, giving the snakes and lizards space to move and exhibit natural behaviours. However many of the people selling the animals here are probably not living in much better condition

My uncle in Thailand, I assume visited places like these on the regular would buy exotic animals and release them to the appropriate habitats after checking if they are okay. From what I’ve seen him do are bear cubs, giant python(anaconda type of snake I think), heaps of turtles, mongoose and a couple other smaller possum looking creatures. He usually takes more common animals to the bush and exotic ones to sanctuary’s or temples that’s specialising in caring for that type. Kinda interesting to see where they are coming from!

I always hope that these animals only have to stay in the small containers for a short time and that they have a better life after the sale, and also in a species-appropriate manner. But never forget what kind of animals, tigers, lions, cheetahs, bears are kept privately in Russia and the USA... mostly only as STATUS SYMPOLS, if you already have a yacht, a Porsche, Ferrari then the unusual animal is often the one last Pe.....s extension to make even more impression... *In the USA, more tigers live in cages with private individuals than there are in the wild in their homeland...

Chatuchuk is nothing.. compared to what goes on in the suburbs at 'wild food' restaurants. I used to rent my home next door to one of these restaurants and a casino. Bears... leopards... tiger... everything was on the menu. Occasionally they would get raided and pay the piper and then back to business again.

That big red & gold bird is a red golden pheasant, it's not doing too good either panting in birds is a sign its stressed or is having trouble. Obviously it's stressed by its enviroment but I think it was probably gonna die shortly after, it was even pacing the cage trying to find cooler open areas. PS yeah you're pretty much hitting the nail on the head mate. There is 100s of animals to 1 shopper, they CANNOT sell that many exotic animals, and half of them are big and older. I'd say its about a 50/50 split, foreigners in the illegal trade & the other half is locals trying to buy that animal to breed to capitalize on selling it to foreigners. Every day bro 10s of boats from places like indonesia & thailand get intercepted filled with exotic animals like this.

I’m from Laos, born in Thailand. I wish country like Thailand and many others are more educated and more compassionate when it comes to animals. It saddens me everytime I see animals are caged up or in a small confined space! Even in the US, reasons why I don’t go to the zoo because I hate seeing animals not in its own habitat.
